Hi Julie - As to whether Family Tree Maker will work with Vista I do not know. I use Legacy. However, with respect to Vista I have a strong opinion. My wife and I each have laptops with Vista. Even though the computers are new they run very slow on Vista. Both have one gigabyte of RAM, which should be plenty. However Vista was largely developed for a generation of computers that are not in wide usage at the moment and are quite expensive, so I would hold off on getting a laptop with Vista pre-installed, although at some time you could upgrade the operating system to Vista. I prefer my older laptop (2 year old HP) because it is faster and easier to use. I have had a lot of different laptops through the years and I prefer Dell. I have had bad luck with both Gateway and HP laptops (both used by my wife), with no help at all beyond the initial warranty period. Dell laptops are not flawless but at least I have found the service better when there is a problem. Since I assume you are in England you would be well advised to consult local computer shops as to reliability and warranty with respect to makers. When all is said and done, however, I prefer desktop machines - they are less finicky and easily repaired and upgraded. [I can do my own maintenance on a desktop, so that may affect my preference.] Good luck.
