My great grandfather, Albert Campbell, married Elizabeth Spires of Leicestershire in Birmingham in 1887. They show up nicely in the 1891 and 1901 censuses, with the right named children and a date of birth for Elizabeth of c 1862. Elizabeth (right occupation and year of birth) appears in the 1881 census, visiting the Barsby family in All Saints, Leicester, where she is shown as born in Leicester. An Elizabeth Spiers is shown as being born in Leicester in the second quarter of 1862 and I can't see anyone with that spelling after that, so she was probably my great grandmother. My problem is that I can't find any trace of her in the 1871 census, despite allowing non-exact matches for first name, surname and date of birth. Before I lash out on the birth and/or marriage certificates for Elizabeth, can anyone help me confirm that I'm on the right path? As an extra twist, my mother thought that her grandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth Sykes, not Spires/Spiers. Thanks Adrian Prince
