This is addressed to Australian listers or those who have access to Australian records of arrivals from UK. My great grandfather, John Olive, had a sister, Elizabeth, who had an illegitimate male child in 1859 in Cosby, where he was christened William Clarke Olive (Clarke being the surname of the putative father, who lived next door). William was brought up by his grand-parents in Cosby, but he went down to Essex as a barman, then he joined the army sometime between 1881 and 1891,when he is listed in Little Warley Barracks as an infantry soldier. He marries Eliza Snutch in Leicester Dec 1893 and produces 4 children in 7 years and is in Leicester Prison in 1901. Local gossip inferred that he subsequently abandonned his family. There are no records as to how long he was in prison, nor for what felony. However I have searched for his death in freeBMD over several decades and many hours with no results. Recently Ancestry have produced indices of Immigrants to Australia from the UK, but they do not offer a "pay as you go". There are several "W (C)Olives" beween 1901 and 1910 in the indices and I wonder if SKS, who has access to these records, could check if my William is there. I am in touch with his descendants, who would really like to know what happened to him. Tks/regards Martin Olive
