Hello: I hope some kind soul on this list can assist me in trying to find my family lines. I live in the USA and have only been able to go back to 1798, Horbling where my fourth GrGrandparents married. Emmanuel Sturgis and Mary Twells: 4 July 1798. I have tried for years to go past them, and look in Lincolnshire for more prior to 1798 for any spelling of Sturgess, Sturgis, Sturges and so on. No one can be found there. A friend of mine here who had a temporary subscription to Ancestory.com, UK found a number of Sturges' in Leicestershire. First in the 1841 then in the 1851 census. I am used to by now the many veried spellings of Sturges, here in the US. After many of the grandchildren of Emanuel & Mary Sturgis came to the US, many other Sturgis came as well. Stayed and lived with them. Trying to find out where in England they came from, has be extremely difficult. But I will list some of the continued first names: William, Emanuel, Sadie/Sarah, Ann, Jane, James, Robert, Mary, Thomas. I do not know if any of these Sturges/Sturgess families in Leicestershire are related to mine, but since my Emmanuel Sturgis was not born in the area where he was married nor where his children and grandchildren were born, I must look else where. Hi Martha On checking my Leicester CD (which only covers 66 parishes) I have found 539 Sturges/Sturgess/Sturgis names, are you able to narrow things down in any way? The parishes covered in this 539 are as follows: Belgrave, Bilton, Burbage, Burton Overy, Earl Shilton, Fleckney, Glooston, Great Bowden, Great glen, Gumley, Houghton on the Hill, Ilston on the Hill, Kings Norton, Mountsorrel, Narborough, North Kilworth, Queniborough, Saddington, Skiffington, Swinford, Syston, Tilton, Tugby, Twyford, Wigston Magna and Wymeswold.
