I have been chasing a distant female cousin (b. 1912), who married thrice and for the second and third marriages changed her name from Vera to Veronica (less Edwardian!)and knocked off 22 years from her age. I have the cert. for her third marriage(1982 register office) with correct name of father etc. and witnessed by both family members (her son acted as her brother!). The second marriage cert.(1958 in Catholic Church) has the right age(minus 22), but a specious father and she claims to be a spinster (her son, who eventually lost touch with her, remembers that she claimed to have obtained false papers at one stage!). The witnesses do not have any family names. The third marriage is straightforward (except for her age) and she classed herself as a widow, with her second marriage name. The second marriage could be a genuine one, but not my cousin (although it is the only match within 10 years ). I have tried to contact the GRO Office, but they are permanently "occupied". Has anyone been along this road and if so, could you give me any tips to validate the second marriage? It is believed that she died on holiday in Corfu or Cyprus, but I assume her body would have been repatriated. I have a possible death in 1996 in Staffs, albeit the birthdate was a few months off, but what is that, when she takes 22 years off her age!! For some females their vanity knows no bounds! I would really appreciate any guidance on this. Martin Olive
