Hi frandbak , I'd be very skeptical about a family story during the Victorian period (with all apologies to the Queen) that involve the birth of a child. It could easily be a story intended to disugise the history of a child born out of wedlock. There were no international adoption agencies in those days, how would a child get from Leicestershire to Alabama. I would check the U.S. Federal Census to see where it says the child was born as well as 1880 where it asks where the child's father and mother were born. I would also check the cenusus for the period when he was old enough to supply his own information, does it change. Also, any record that might ask where he was born or the names of his parents, like military or death records. I live in the U.S. so there are probably people in Leicestershire who can give you better advice but I'd check the 1851 census in Leicestershire for Askews and also city directories for that period if they exist. Still, I wouldn't invest a lot of time looking in Leicestershire, you could spend years looking and if the story isn't true, you'll be wasting your time. I'd true to prove or disprove the story first, family stories are notorious for redirecting people away from family scandles.
