His full name was Charles Askew. He was sent to USA and was adopted at age of 3 by a Dr. Miller of Columbus, GA. don't know what organization may have helped the Mother so that he could come here for a better life. May have been born in 1851 because the date 1854 was the year he was 3. I have just started this search and am in need of guidance. frandbak@bellsouth.net
Hi - A quick search of the Government of Canada's Library and Archive Records shows approximately 10 different Askew children arriving in Canada. The majority appear to be sent by Barnardo's. There were 1,000's of children sent to Canada by "Dr. Barnardo" and other organizations as well. These children are referred to as "British Home Children". My Grandmother was one of these children, sent to Canada in 1905, at the age of 10 years. Hope this helps in your search. Ham 4a 13 As you will see, none in Leicestershire (thats not to say he wasn't born there just that he wasn't registered) There are no Charles MCNUTTS registered anywhere in the Country between 1849 & 1854 How do you know he was supposed to be born in Leicestershire? I do not think it may neccesarily be a case of "for a better life" but more a case of out of my hands and perhaps a few quid earned on the way Just a thought Of course I may be doing the poor mother an injustice, she may have passed away in childbirth and the child was taken in by the Parish Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > His full name was Charles Askew.
