Her name was Caroline Ann HALE and all her life she was known as Carrie. (She married John CHARLES in 1893 in Glamorgan, in case anybody finds a connection). She did have a tenuous Leicester connection as it was her son (my late father-in-law) who "emigrated" from the Valleys to Leicester to teach at Gateway Boys' School. He was also organist & choirmaster at Clarendon Park Methodist church. Regards, Blanche Charles Wellington New Zealand

    3. Hi but popular about that time was Karen (Caren) and Karina (Carina) Chara, and Cara which all shorten to Carrie as well as the existance of of the name Karrie make it most possible that she did shorten her name. May be she liked the name Carrie, You dont say if she was Welsh speaking, names sound different in Welsh and she may well of shortened it to escape hearing the English "murdering" her first name. I know a good few Polish Michal who just became Mike, etc (Michal in Polish sounds a lot like Meehoow) How Terry or Terences become Tel or Tez ? regards Tery Norway > Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2008 17:26:57 +1300 > From: blanchec@paradise.net.nz > To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com > Subject: [LEI] Caroline / Carrie > > "TERRY / IRENE." wrote: > > can someone tell me if he name caroline would be shortened to carrie around 1895 ish. > > --------------------------------- > Hi Terry, > > It certainly was the case with my husband's grandmother, who was born in 1873.
