Hi, Verne, This is not pertinent to your current inquiry, but have you seen pictures of Stenson House in Coalville? If not, you should. I have no idea whether this new or repurposed mansion has anything to do with your family, or not, but it is worth a look! http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/community/registration_services/marriages_and_ civil_partnerships/registeroffices/stensonhouse.htm Carolyn in snowy Minnesota, USA -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Vern Prescott Sent: Saturday, February 15, 2014 8:39 AM To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com Subject: [LEI] Rev C. From newspaper searches, it appears that he did not stay in Coalville very long, although there seems to have been another Rev C W Harrington also. Hi Carolyn, Pleased that I was able to help. When I google St. Georges, Whitwick I find Whitwick on the Leicestershire Villages site.? But for parish records it refers to 'See Swannington'.? Both Whitwick and Swannington parish records are held at the Leicestershire Records Office.. There is a St. George's Church at Swannington.? You can look on Google satellite and if you enter the post code - LE67 8QB - you will be taken to the right general location.? The church is at the south-west corner of the junction of Church Hill and Loughborough (A572).? Streetview will show the church and graveyard. Hi Peter Holmes I note you post the name FREER in Leics. This may not be much help, but I was at Humberstone infants and junior school with a Pamela FREER. She lived opposite the junior school entrance and her mother was the "lolipop lady" for the infants crossing the road at their entrance. We went to different high schools when we left that school in 1951 and I had no more contact with her. Nivard, Once again you have found "something" of assistance. I think The Manor Farm was at about 85 or 87 Main Street and as farm manager, Dad had a house at 91 Main Street. Next door to us (1952 to 71) was a farm ran by a Reg BROWN (possibly called Springfield Farm. I will have to look at some village maps?) He lived alone in half of a semi detached (? 93 Main St) and in the other half was a Miss CRAWFORD. Perhaps she was a spinster daughter of George CRAWFORD? Arthur E LEIGH-BOULTER owned Ford dealership Central Motors on the right hand side just before getting to the central part of the city. He passed away some time after 1971 but as of 2010 his wife Margarite (sp?) she was still living in the house when I was on a round the world trip & spent a few days in Quenni area. They had 2 daughters (Wendy & ? Judy) and like their parents they had hunting and riding as sports/hobbies & one of them I believe was picked as a show jumper in the Commonwealth/Olympic games. Your reference to James HOLMES having a phone at Manor farm in 1942 probably ties the purchase date down a bit. He had 3 sons and for one of them James Norman HOLMES (original owner of Harry LLEWELLYN'S Foxhunter) I have some timeline information that could tie it down to a little before then. That's a task for tomorrow! Hope all in western Europe did not suffer too much as a result of the massive storm of the last few days. Peter Holmes Western Australia. Margaret, The names you mention are not familiar to me even though I lived there between 1953 to 1971. My guess is that James HOLMES owned the farm as from "about" 1940. Manor Farm is directly opposite the C of E church spire/entrance. Let's see what others come up with. Peter Holmes Western Australia. Hi David From the inception of civil registration in mid 1837, marriages could take place in Catholic Churches with a registrar in attendance From 1898 an appointed person could record the marriage and ended the requirement for a registrar to attend Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/02/2014 17:12, David Robinson wrote: > When did Roman Catholic weddings became recognized in the UK without having > to have a Registrar Office one. > > Regards > David Robinson
When did Roman Catholic weddings became recognized in the UK without having to have a Registrar Office one. Regards David Robinson
This caught my interest as my great grandfather was a labourer at Manor Farm, Queniborough and having just checked my records my great great grandfather Charles Newbold was living at 93 Main Street in 1901 with his wife Emma and 5 of his children. His occupation is shown as a Waggoner on a farm. Other family members also worked at Manor Farm. My brother has a cup in his possession that was awarded to Charles for first prize in a ploughing competition that was held annually in the area I believe. My grandfather was born in Main Street in 1905 in a small cottage next to the Methodist Church? He met my grandmother when she was working as a barmaid in the Horse & Groom pub where the landlords were her sister and brother in law - Jim and Gladys Veasey - this would be in the 1930s. Nivard thanks for the information to be honest I have not done any family research for awhile now Yes the toy shop on Hinckley Road was owned by my Grandmother Florence North and when she passed away it went to her son Fred North, my uncle. My mum was a North her name was Winnifred They also owned a toy shop as Melton turn, I was talking awhile back to Graham who worked there and has since moved out to Australia and who is also on this list Margaret On 09/02/2014 12:55, Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Margaret > > As soon as I saw the name NORTH it brought back happy memories of my > childhood, of NORTHs the Toy Shop on Hinckley road > > I feel sure we have spoken on them before now > > having a look at your lot in earlier years > > in 1871 & 1881 Sam is enumerated in Queniborough but no address > > In 1891 he is at 16 Jubilee street St Margarets Leicester as a Butcher > > In 1901 he is at 91 Belgrave as a Butcher & Retail(er?) > > By 1911 he is back in Queniborough at 2 New st as a market gardener > > No Sam NORTH in the 1873 returns of owners of land in Leicestershire > > NORTHs in the above were > Benjamin residing Nottingham 22 acres > Isaiah Loughborough just over 1 acre > James trustees of (Loughborough) just over 16 acres > Mary Countesthorpe just over 19 acres > > Sams mother Mary Ann was enumerated in 1861 at Gaddesby as a farmer 120 > acres employing 1 lab > > Back to 1851 Sam is with parents William and Mary in Gaddesby, William a > farmer of 135 acres (1 labourer) > > (generally land owners made sure the enumerator knew it) > > Mary Ann NORTH is with son in law Joseph FISHER in Great Dalby in 1881 > > Probate Calendars 1912 > NORTH Mary Ann of Queniborough Leicestershire widow died 14th April 1890 > Administration London 18 March to Samuel North retired Butcher > Effects £20 > > I can see what I presume is your John at 1 Melton road in 1901, I > suspect he would not recognise the area today > > I assume your John was John Chapman NORTH of 53 Loughborough rd who died > 16th July 1943, his probate was granted to Samuel Ernest MASON and > Frederick Samuel NORTH a stationer and toy dealer > > My conclusion from the above is that like most farmers of that period, > your NORTHs were tenants rather than owners > > I also checked the various directories and none I found gave an address, > just that they were farmers and graziers > > It was the norm for farmers to lease their land for three year periods, > it was not unusual to farm the same land for many years, often a lease > passing down from father to son > > Land was owned by a relatively small number of people > > In my experience farmers quite often bought a little land themselves to > retire on but could only afford small amounts > > It might be worth checking with Leicestershire records office to see if > they have anything on leases or tenants in Queniborough, I have some > from my farming relatives in Buckinghamshire and they are quite > illuminating where they survive > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > > > On 09/02/2014 11:00, Fabis wrote: >> My Great Grandfather owned and ran a farm in Queniborough around 1880 >> unfortunately I do not know which farm it was Sam North was a >> grazier/butcher but left around 1900 and moved to Belgrave in Leicester >> where he moved into being a butcher. G'day from Western Australia, My Gt Grand Uncle James HOLMES owned and operated the above farm up to about 1950 before selling it to Arthur E Leigh Boulter ( the Ford Dealer in Leicester) and in about 1952/53 Dad came there to manage it. Yes the HOLMES' had 2 stints there. Can someone tell me the way to establish when the HOLMES' bought and sold the property. I imagine that it would be a titles searching web site or an email enquiry to the county council (rates notices). Peter Holmes Western Australia.
