Hi Robert, Nivard has nailed it for you.? I would just add two points to his note.? "The Gateway" used to be called 'Asylum Street'.? Middle Street ran parallel to Asylum Street, as you will see from the maps that Nivard is sending. Yesterday I had an advanced notification email from British Newspapers as I have subscribed with them before offering a one month deal for just £9.95. this compares with their old price of £29.95. Having checked their website it appears that this price is available to all/new subscribers, and I also noticed an Easter special of a 7 day trial for just £1GB! I have a Find my past subscription so use their website for the same resource, but for those that dont this is surely a great bargain. I cannot over-emphasise the amount I have learned about so many of my ancestors from past Newspapers. Brian Binns

I regularly went to Bradgate Park with my mother in the 1940s and early '50s on Midland Red bus from St Margaret's bus station, having gone there on our local Scraptoft Midland Red bus. There were two routes, one to Bradgate Park - that may have only run in summer - and the other to Newtown Linford. I don't remember walking very far to the main entrance to the park. Bradgate Park Cottages must have been in Newtown Linford, thouh I don't remember hearing of them with that name. We occasionally had a light tea in one of the cottage cafes there. I think we got on at St Margaret's bus station. (I remember the bus grinding up Mowacre Hill.) I don't think it ran to Newtown Lindford where the main entrance to Bradgate Park was. I think we had to get off at Cropston or at "The Triangle' and walk through Swithland Woods and then walk through the Park from its northern entrance. I think you also could go on a Midland Red to Anstey and walk from there. > > Cannot help with Bradgate Park cottages I'm afraid. Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Terry Holmes's original question hasn't received any real answers - but I've very much enjoyed reading about so many peoples' memories of the Park. I have been looking at Google Satellite views of the park because I vaguely remember that there were buildings actually inside the park, nearer the Cropston Reservoir end. I see that there is now a Visitor Centre in that location and some Park admin offices in a wood nearby. Is there a chance that there were also originally some park workers’ cottages in the vicinity? The people manning the Visitor Centre could possibly help, particularly if they have any 1950s O.S. maps. Jack Allen West Midlands
If you Google it you get this which gives you plenty: http://www.polishresettlementcampsintheuk.co.uk/ashbyfolville1.htm Interesting account, I was very familiar in my childhood with the Polish camps around Dalby Rd in Melton Mowbray, there are comprehensive websites on these also. -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Louis Mills Sent: 01 April 2014 21:20 To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com Subject: [LEI] Ashby Folville Polish camp Hi, seekers, Can anyone tell me anything about the displaced Polish refugee camp at Ashby Folville? Hi Terry While in the cubs, in the late forties, a group of us pushed a hand cart from Braunstone to Bradgate Park area as we were camping in the area. Like others cycled there many times in the fifties. Nivard, Yes, many reports were distributed to other newspapers but having done a lot of research on The Nottingham Evening Post, I know that that publication has not been digitised beyond 1945. It may well be the same for many others. Newspapers from this time are though available at the relevant Archives - for Nottingham it is The Central Library - for searching in the old way! Terry, I have a few publications on Newtown Linford and that side of the Park - memories of 20th century locals, that kind of thing - so if you let me know who you're looking for I'll see whether they're mentioned. As a onetime resident, I can remember taking a bus into Leicester before I was old enough to drive. Buses went through Anstey and fetched up at St Margaret's Bus Station. Jill Grey
Hi Graham You reminded me of a Sunday jaunt we had in the 60's One of brothers had a garage and used an ex WD Rolls Royce engined Austin Champ as a recovery vehicle One Sunday we drove over in it to Braggy park as we often did of a weekend, we went around to the back car park and drove through the park up to Old John, stayed a while then down the front and out I suspect we couldn't do that these days <g> Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 01/04/2014 02:05, Graham Grant wrote: > Hi Terry > While in the cubs, in the late forties, a group of us pushed a hand > cart from Braunstone to Bradgate Park area as we were camping in the area. > Like others cycled there many times in the fifties. > > Graham Grant > Sydney Australia
