Dear List, At the Police Court, ASHBY-DE-LA-ZOUCH, on Saturday 3rd June 1876, my 3rd great grandfather John PICKERING pleaded guilty of assaulting his wife Julia PICKERING (Tamworth Herald 10 Jun 1876). He was sentenced to six months hard labour. At which prison would he have been committed, Leicester perhaps? Regards George Pickering Rainham, Kent.
For as long as I can remember AOL have been the most problematic of emailers, certainly well over a decade Second to that is Yahoo Whether that has effected contact with you is difficult to define for obvious reasons I have removed the other list addresses as cross posting can cause problems for list admins, it is never a good idea to cross post, it only takes a few seconds if you want to send to more than one list Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/08/2014 10:49, DrGeneal via wrote: > Several of ny friends and some businesses have repoted difficulty in > contacting me because I use AOL.Com > Has anybody come across that prob;em? Hello, I am looking for places where I might find more information to find out what my 3g grandfather did while in Leicester in the early part of the 19th century, a connection that I've only recently become aware of. Here is a not-so-short summary of what I know: ROBERT RANYARD was born in Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey in 1780. He married SARAH HAYCRAFT on 4 October 1809 at St. Paul's Deptford. Their daughter Emma was born in Noble St., London and and baptised at Haberdasher's Hall Independent Church. Both families were Independents becoming Baptists later in life. They knew each other from Kingston as they all attended he same church, Heather St. Independent, judging by the children's baptisms. By 1841, the RANYARDs are in Clifton, Bedfordshire. where he is shown as of Independent means. So that gives book ends for time. Daughter Emma had married Edward West in Warwick (not quite sure what the Warwick connection is but both were of that parish) in 1835 but by 1841 was living in Shefford, Beds just a few miles from her parents, or more likely vice versa. The RANYARD family were mostly tallow chandlers; the Haycrafts Ironmongers in both Kingston and Deptford. However, Robert seems to have been more a merchant (he was a second son). I think he was in Canterbury, Kent before his marriage. The information I have on him in Leicester is that he was a merchant and/or hosiery manufacturer. Between about 1805 and 1831, at various times, he inherited a significant amount of property and money from his father's estate ($1000 cash; £2000 in government stock; property at Oxshott, Surrey). In 1822 and 1828, he was listed in Rutland St. under Manufacturers of Hosiery, although his newspaper obituary in several newspapers referred to him as a merchant. So I don't know if he was a factory owner or a wholesaler. He was listed as a resident who did not vote in a poll in 1832, still of Rutland St. Don't know whether that would be a residential or business address or both. Per the 1841 Poll books, he still owned property in Leicestershire: in Bitteswell, freehold houses and land inhabited by Sarah and William Morriss (not found due to legibility problems); in Ullesthorpe, freehold houses inhabited by Charles Shipman (a labourer and family per the census) and others ; and freehold houses in Belgrave Gate, Leicester (not named). His nephew Benjamin of Swancombe, Kent owned freehold houses in Canning Place. Robert's Will of 1853 makes no reference to any specific real anywhere. However, when it was proven in 1855, it says "formerly of Noble St. in the City of London afterwards of Leicester in the County of Leicestershire but late of Clifton in the County of Bedford". There are a couple of other tidbits: Sister Sarah's will written in 1818 refers to £500 lent to Robert and "that share in farms (I think) which was purchased at Leicester" Brother William's will of 1845 refers to "the mortgage of eight hundred pounds of Mr. Austins of Leicester on his estate in that town" Whether either of these are the properties owned by Robert in 1841, I haven't a clue - but William was pretty well off and it would have been quite possible for him to offer a mortgage on a property sold by his brother. So there's sort of story but it has far too many holes! Any ideas about how I can find out more about Robert, his work, his properties etc would be much appreciated. Alison Vancouver
Hi Roslyn, hope that you do not think that I have forgotten you. This is an update on what I have done so far. I have checked with Charnwood Borough Council and checked the voter's rolls. Brian was at this address 2002 - 2008. possibly before this, but I could not get that info over the phone. The 2009 roll was compiled from returns in October 2008, so he was not there at that time. Also living at the address was Janice A Jarram at the same time but she was there until 2011 roll, this was compiled from returns in October 2010. There was an electoral survey on 6th November 2011 and on the return Janice was crossed out. This would fit in with the February 2011 sale of the property. Again I do not know if Janice was there before 2002. I visited 18 Blake Drive today and spoke to one of the current occupants. He had been there for about 3 years and did not know either Brian or Janice However he knew the names as he said that they still get mail for them. He is going to speak to his landlord at the weekend and see if he knows them. I left my tel number and e-mail address. I tried a few other neighbours but no one at home. I did speak to a gent just around the corner but he did not know them. If you check on 192.com for Janice A Jarram there are two entries, one is fir the same period as Brian and the other is for the voter's roll 2013-2014 Dennis Jackson has just sent me this address and I will check it out in the next few days. If you could look this up on FMP maybe we could trace her and find out more about Brian. He obviously lived with her for some time. I contacted the County Registrar to see if there has been a recent death recorded for either of them, but they would only tell me that they had no records for them. This does not include Leicester City which has its own office, and would have been used if they were in one of the city hospitals or care homes. I tried directory enquiries for Janice here in Loughborough. They have 2 listed, one is ex directory and the other is 01509 551478. Without more info I am reluctant to call. So that is where I am, not much further I am afraid but some more info and perhaps a little closer. I did a bit of searching on FreeBMD to see what I could find. I am sure that you have them but here they are anyway and you can cross check. Hi Barbara I have a BALL ancestor who I don't know much about. She was Mary Ball born about 1797 in Leics (from 1841 Census). She married Thomas Holmes in Ibstock on 18 Oct 1819 (from IGI) and had 10 children. She died before the 1851 Census. She was my greatx3 grandmother. What registers have you obtained? Baptisms, marriages or burials. Are they for the whole of Leics? Where do your BALLs come from?
