    3. Hi Dora, We're a friendly bunch here, so feel free to post any Leicestershire-related questions about your family history. Even if people don't know the answers, they can sometimes help to put you on the right track. I've had an enormous amount of help from various lists over the years, so I try to repay that by helping others when I can, and I know many others feel the same way. I would encourage any newcomers to at least "dip their feet in the water" and post a query. We were all newcomers once, so we know what it feels like. 3. Hello Mike & Karin Thanks for both your replies. (Wish I could get to the LRO, Mike - apart from needing to get my hands on the Gene Baptist files, my husband was born in Wigston). Yes, it's a pity that the General Baptist theory doesn't apply to Abraham, although perhaps there could be a connection to the Barton ADCOCKs, somewhere along the way. J R Godfrey's 1891 "Historic Memorials of Barton, Melbourne, and Other General Baptist Churches" (commissioned by Thomas Cook), has the following about William ADCOCK, "one of the first seven members of which the church was composed in 1745....... He sustained the office of Deacon for the long period of 60 years...... He was a man of good understanding, but of few words, very sedate and averse to levity. He was by trade a carpenter & joiner, and very useful in superintending the repairs of the meeting houses, as the chapels were then called..... His judgment, hands, feet, and purse, were on all occasions ready to assist the cause of religion...." >From "Memoir of Samuel Deacon of Barton" (pub 1888), "In 1771, a few weeks before he left Leicester, he married the eldest (and the only) daughter of Mr W Adcock........" "A few weeks after his marriage he removed to Barton and entered on business for himself. On his going to Barton, he resided in the house of Mr Adcock, his father-in-law." (The unnamed daughter was Elizabeth ADCOCK). On another tack, entirely, although it is an uncommon name, here in NZ, I first knew the name ADCOCK because a very lovely older girl took me under her wing when I first started school, in Christchurch. I recall that her father owned a well-known china and gift shop in the CBD. I have just made a search on our NZ National Library's "Papers Past" website and have discovered that descendants of what appears to be the only ADCOCK family in Christchurch in late C19 were members of the Baptist Church! (Not only that, but by coincidence, they lived in the very street, of NZ's then most populous city, where I spent most of my childhood and youth - a quite different area from where we lived when I first started school). My lovely friend - who was tragically killed in a motor accident, about 50 years ago, when she was still in her teens - most probably descended from this family. If you are interested in my looking for the family's origins, Karin, please don't hesitate to let me know. Kind regards Blanche Charles PS: William ADCOCK sounds like a daunting chap. "Averse to levity" wouldn't do it, for me!! ;-) -----Original Message----- On Friday, 7 November 2014, Mike Gould [mailto:mike.gould@ndirect.co.uk] wrote: Good point about non-conformists. Karin - unfortunately, mostly these early Baptist Church records are not online (although Blanche's excellent website is an exception). I presume from your email address that you're in Canada, so popping into the Leicestershire Record Office may not be an option ! One of the fascinating things about Samuel Deacon of Barton in the Beans is that he was not only the preacher there, but also a famous clock maker. His grandfather clocks have "Barton" as the name on the front, rather than his own name. His ledger covered both of his occupations, so you read on one page that a clock was to be delivered to Molly Brewin and on the next that Elizabeth Smith was to be dismissed for adultery !

Abraham Adcock was a verger at the parish church, but one of his sons or grandsons converted to the Baptist religion and that branch of the family moved to Glenfield, where the sons seemed intent on buying all of the farmland for their own homes. One of the grandsons or great grandsons married Elizabeth Bennett from Kirby Muxloe, and she returned to live with her father after the death of her husband and a good portion of the family. She had a young daughter, Minnie and was pregnant with her son, Samuel Forman Adcock. We have never been able to learn the fate of Elizabeth Bennett Adcock; there are so many entries for the name in BDM indices I would never get through them. I believe Samuel Forman was raised in the high Anglican Church, or at least his children were raised in that church, possibly trying to hide his wife's Jewish heritage. It's an interesting family, and I will enjoy looking through your sources...you never know what might be ! gleaned. 3. Hi Nivard, Thanks for the info - most welcome. The entry for Dr. Garfit was interesting - should the "caccinator" be "vaccinator" I wonder ? 3. Hi Nivard, Thanks for the feedback - I'll make further enquiries about Worths. Although the map is an updated version, I haven't touched it for some years and I'm sure we have more information ourselves that we haven't got round to putting on the map. Your enquiry has spurred me on to investigating further, so thanks again. When I asked about Jones & Overton, I was thinking that it had your surname as one of the partners, but I realise now that it's a different spelling. Doh ! Funny you should ask about the chapel in the Old House - some of us were talking about it yesterday ! There was talk a few years back about it possibly being restored to its original state, but from what we've seen of the house recently, this seems unlikely. It was, we believe, a small Roman Catholic chapel, built at a time when Catholics were being persecuted, so it was a way of practicing the faith in private. I didn't know it had the name that you mentioned - rather a grand name for what was in effect a fairly simple room. The current owners kindly showed us around a few years ago, so if you wanted to know more, a letter + SAE to them would probably do the trick. I can't remember their name, but the address should suffice. 3. Hi Karin, Glad you found the map interesting. Adcock is a very old Kirby name - going back to the 19th century. Fred Foreman ran a local bus service, using a converted lorry !
