Bill, An 1879 Irish marriage certificate, while it won’t give the mother, it will give the fathers of the marrying parties (unless either the bride or groom were illegitimate). Sorry for typo - I have quite a few Richard Websters in my family, including my son. Obviously it should read: Dr Richard Rupert Johnston. Hi, I have found the following marriage on Ancestry which may help you to track down a certificate with his father's name. Richard Johnston to Nora Alice Marie Sandes in Jly/Aug/Sep quarter 1879 Registration District Dublin South Vol 2 Page 573 FHL film 101253 Also on Ancestry there are index references to film records held in the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, but I tried Family Search in vain. Records as follows : Johnston Richard Rupert (Surgeon) 1886 Leicester/Lincoln Film # 101017 Section 2 Johnston Richard Rupert (County Surgeon) 1886 Leicester Film # 581931 T12806 Johnston Richard (Esq - MD) 1876 Dublin Film # 4969365 T14068 1 - 5 Good luck with your search. I have already sent a link to the website of the church which has photos of all the gravestones in the churchyard. For Bill Webster There is a website for St Matthew Sutton Bridge which contains details and photos of all graves. This is the link http://www.gravestonephotos.com/public/gravedetails.php?grave=207356&personid=438168&scrwidth=1200 Brian Binns
Bill, I see that you have been given some more info from Ancestry by others. To add to this I have found the younger daughter Nora Kathleen in Ireland on the 1901 census listed as a niece of James Adams and his wife Francs Maud Adams age 51, who therefore must be Richard Johnston’s sister. This James Adams is the vicar named in Richard’s will? They are resident in Kill, County Kildare, which fits in with other info you have. This info could be another route to find Richard’s father. I then found Nora on the 1911 census in Manchester Workhouse as a probationer Nurse. She remained single and died aged 90 in Surrey Sept qtr 1977. Her mother Nora Alice Johnson died in 1893 in Kensington registration district. I found Sara Olive Johnson in 1911 as a hospital nurse in London. She is single and though her birthplace is recorded as London, I think this is her and that there was an error on the form. I cannot find her in the 1901 census but there is a death in 1963 in Gloucester for a Sara Johnston aged 81. In the absence of finding a marriage this could be her. I hope the above helps, but at the risk of again seeming to be arrogant I still maintain that all this information is available on subscription sites such as Ancestry, which is what I used. Hi Bill I don't think Dora mentioned but you can order these wills on line now, I did a couple of weeks ago and they send you a link so that you can download them on-line. Good service. The Probate Calendar is on Ancestry too but it is free at: https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills It speeds things up if you already know the date of death. Wills cost £10 each. Bill, I apologise if you thought my response arrogant. I was merely trying to point out that the information is out there if you are prepared to look for it but you do have to subscribe to some sites to achieve this. Though there are some free sites, and I see that someone else has supplied details of his burial from one such site. And I did miss the reference to son Richard in your email so apologies for suggesting that you missed it. Even with the contradictory info on the 19891 census it's still reasonable to assume that this couple married in Ireland and that is where you should find the name of Richard's father. Wearing sackcloth and ashes I have had a look through the digitised Newspapers on Find my Past but to no avail. There are some references to Richard Johnston when he was based in Wymondham but nothing on his stay in Sutton Bridge. Not all papers have been digitised and with Sutton Bridge being on the border with Norfolk you would hope that there might be a report there, but sadly Norfolk papers have not yet been digitised. I would suggest that you join the Lincs rootsweb forum and maybe someone local could take a photo of Richard.'s gravestone for you - if one exists. I would also add that I too help and have helped many folk on this list. I wish you well in your continued search Brian Binn On 20 January 2015 at 11:41, Bill Webster via < leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com> wrote: > Lol, what an arrogant response. > > > > A burial record, a gravestone (at Sutton Bridge, or Sutton St Mary’s? - I > do not know the locality) or an obituary in a local paper was what I sought > help and advice from this list for. Bill, I would give this advice to all researchers - if you are serious about Family History then invest in a subscription to either Ancestry or Find my Past and you should be able to solve most of your problems yourself. You should also be aware that you would only find the name of Richard;'s father from his (Richard's) marriage certificate. If you were to check on the 1881 census you would find Richard and his wife living in Wymondham with a son, also called Richard, who you obviously did not know about. His age is given as 1 year, but it looks like a previous entry of 17 months has been crossed out. The birthplace of this son is shown as Dublin, Ireland, so it is a fair bet that Richard senior and Nora married in Ireland.I would presume that this son died as you have not found him in 1891, so you would have to search deaths for this period - also available on either of the above subscription sites. I do not have access to Irish record within my subscriptions to either Ancestry of Find my Past so I cannot help you further, but at least you have a starting point. By sheer chance I was in Sutton Bridge last October. There certainly is a church there with a graveyard with quite a lot of legible graves of that era. However, if he is from Dublin, then isn't there a good chance he would be Catholic and therefore not buried in the local church where he died? I am a little surprised that his death doesn't come up on a search of the Newspaper Archives on Find my Past. It could be worth joining the Lincolnshire list. Perhaps someone has better knowledge of the area. Alison Vancouver

January 1915 saw the first ever Air Raids on England by Zeppelins. Apparently they were supposed to fly to the Humber ports but were blown off course by winds, and ended up dropping bombs on Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth. Brian Binns
