    3. Can anyone help me with the CLOWES family at Woodhouse Eaves? Samuel CLOWES, an MP lived in Eaves St. He was married to one of the Okeover family and had 24 family and servants living in the house at the 1870 census. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Eaves St and have they any ideas of why my Great Grandma, Eliza Amelia FLAVELL was a scullery maid there at that time? Eliza came from a fairly wealthy family in Birmingham, but I believe her father had died. I would love to know if the families had some links. Stephanie. South wales

    3. Hi Listers, Hope you are all well? I have a copy of the parish register for the marriage of one of my relatives who was married at St. Margaret's in 1832 one of his witnesses also appears as a witness for another marriage which took place on the same day, the witness was John Stringer. Was John Stringer a regular witness for people who where married at St. Margaret's and didn't have any witnesses of their own? TIA Lynne

    3. Hello Lynne I believe you are correct in thinking that John Stringer often acted as a witness for couples married at St. Margaret's. He appears as a witness at the weddings of several of my ancestors who were married there. He is not an ancestor of mine. I was puzzled that his name came up so often and came to the conclusion that John Stringer was employed by the Church and was called on to be a witness when needed at marriages that took place at St. Margaret's. Can anyone tell me where Eaves Street is in Woodhouse, or has the house a name? Has anyone any more information on Samuel CLOWES whose father, I believe, was MP for Leicester. I wonder why Eliza was a scullery maid as she came from a well heeled family, but I believe her father died of TB. Steph Vale of Glamorgan

    3. Hello everyone, It's Janette here from Australia. I've been researching my maiden name for years. I'm descended from John GRUNDY & Elizabeth BALLARD who married 5.8.1740 in Fenny Drayton, Leics. I have photos & transcripts of the memorial stones from Fenny Drayton churchyard of John & Elizabeth & their children but I do not know where John & Elizabeth were born or their parents names. John died 21.3.1773 aged 64 (so born c1709) & Elizabeth died 20.4.1776 aged 55 (so born c1721) BUT I have not been able to find either of their births in Fenny Drayton, so don't know their parent's names. How can I get a copy of their marriage certificate?? Where were they born?? & who were their parents?? The GRUNDY family was in the cotton industry & were non-conformist & shifted to Salford in Lancashire. The GRUNDYs married into the ESTLIN & PRIOR families both non-conformist & I've researched those lines too. ------------------------------------------ My ancestor John Russell GRUNDY came to Australia in 1856 on the "Ben Nevis" & headed for the Ballarat goldfields. He was down as a "spinner" on the passenger list but ran a Tobacconsist & Importers business at the goldfields & I have his Tradesmans Token. Could someone please help me...how do I get a copy of the marriage certificate to perhaps find out where they were born & their parents names. I haven't found their births in Fenny Drayton, Leics. Hope someone can help me please, Regards, Janette (Jan) Pfeifer nee GRUNDY in Australia

    3. I have found the following JACKSON Family in the 1881 Census. However I have had no luck finding them in any other Census. George William Collins Jackson was not born in the East Indies but in Sydney. Australia. His father was sent to Australia as a convict in 1814. George was fortunate to do his schooling in England and as far as we know never returned to Australia. George W C Jackson married Catherine Price in 1848 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. Can anyone else find them in any of the other census? If so I would be ever so grateful. Quite a lot of New South Wales records can be accesses on ; http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm Queensland also has some records on line, at ; - http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/829.htm Victorian records are on CD's. 3. This is addressed to Australian listers or those who have access to Australian records of arrivals from UK. My great grandfather, John Olive, had a sister, Elizabeth, who had an illegitimate male child in 1859 in Cosby, where he was christened William Clarke Olive (Clarke being the surname of the putative father, who lived next door). William was brought up by his grand-parents in Cosby, but he went down to Essex as a barman, then he joined the army sometime between 1881 and 1891,when he is listed in Little Warley Barracks as an infantry soldier. He marries Eliza Snutch in Leicester Dec 1893 and produces 4 children in 7 years and is in Leicester Prison in 1901. Local gossip inferred that he subsequently abandonned his family. There are no records as to how long he was in prison, nor for what felony. However I have searched for his death in freeBMD over several decades and many hours with no results. Recently Ancestry have produced indices of Immigrants to Australia from the UK, but they do not offer a "pay as you go". There are several "W (C)Olives" beween 1901 and 1910 in the indices and I wonder if SKS, who has access to these records, could check if my William is there. I am in touch with his descendants, who would really like to know what happened to him. Tks/regards Martin Olive

    3. Hi Not sure whether or not people already know this but if you put a phrase into google inside inverted commas, google will search for the entire phrase. This is very useful when yo have unusual names, for example Typing William Hobby Sager gives around 24,000 hits Typing "William Hobby Sager" gives one hit and allowed me to find both William himself and his brother Edmund, who had gone to Sydney. Hope this helps someone else, it certainly has helped me! 1. Re: [LEI] Congregational Church
    2. Peter Freshwater
    3. Hello Linda Your feeling of confusion is understandable. Not being a Harborian myself, I have had to look this up. William and Esther ESSEX must have been married in the Chapel of St Dionysus (Church of England) which became the Parish Church of Market Harborough in 1880, but before that was only a parochial chapel, the Parish Church being St Mary in Arden (now a ruined shell). The Congregational, formerly the Independent, Chapel was quite separate from either of these, and was the leading nonconformist chapel in the town. A number of its members, including two of my great great aunts who kept a milliner's shop in the High Street, were taken to court for refusing to pay the church rates. By law, in spite of having their own chapels, the nonconformists had to be baptised and married in the parish church or the parochial chapel, and normally buried in the parish churchyard. According to David Clifford's book 'My Ancestors were Congregationalists' (Society of Genealogists, 1997), the Union Chapel in Canterbury was indeed an Independent chapel like the Market Harborough one; and is now St Andrew's United Reformed Church, Canterbury (the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches of England combined in the 1960s to become the United Reformed Church, but the Market Harborough Congregational Chapel never joined the URC and is still an independent Congregational chapel). So, William ESSEX may well have been an Independent and a member of the MH Independent Chapel as well as having been married in the Parochial Chapel. I hope that clarifies things a bit for you.
