    3. Hi Joy My PERKINSes hailed from Kibworth Beauchamp and before that Gloostone, and one, a William PERKINS (1812-1878) married a Sally FOLWELL from Fleckney in 1835 in Kibworth. William's father and grandfather were both Josephs. Fleckney, Kilby, Kibworth are all very close, and Gloostone and Leicester not very far away. I haven't got far with my Perkinses yet, but I will bear yours in mind as I explore further . Do you know the names and dates of your Samuel's parents and any brothers and sisters? The Leicestershire Burials Index (volume 1) lists an Elizabeth PERKINS buried at Fleckney aged 68 on 25 March 1832, who could be yours. The index starts in 1813, so I have no hope of using it to trace EMMERSON burials before that date (i.e. of Elizabeth's first husband, as a possible route to their marriage and Elizabeth's maiden name). The only Samuel PERKINS listed was buried in 1862 aged 68, so cannot be the one who married Elizabeth Emmerson in 1799. It does list other PERKINSes buried at Fleckney, however. This probably doesn't help much, but I am happy to exchange details if you wish. Good hunting. 2. Lesley Chaney
    3. Hi, With so little information to go on, it seems to me you need to start your research in the USA, which I presume is where you live. The time-honoured method is to work back from yourself generation by generation, using the records available to prove or disprove family stories and connections, until you get back to this Dr Miller. The surviving records concerning him, especially a Will, may give you more information about Charles Askew, and therefore make a search in England more productive. Every family historian will tell you that family stories are not always reliable: they may have been misinformed themselves or their memories may be faulty. It is therefore essential to check what you think you know to be sure of the facts. I've had a good many family stories turn out to be pure romance. For instance, a gt-grandfather of mine appears on the 1881 census with my gt-grandmother, grandmother and a previously unknown baby daughter, 3 years after he was supposed to have died! I still don't know what happened to gt-grandfather and the baby daughter, but the research I have done shows me why they have been airbrushed out of the family history. If you check thoroughly back through the generations, you may also have surprises and some hard information from which to work. If you find there really was a Dr Miller who adopted Charles Askew and took him Stateside, there may be a family connection as adoption was informal in those days. And the people on this list will, I am sure, be their usual generous selves in helping you to find out more. Hope that helps, Lesley -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of frandbak To All: this little one had a Mother whowas in a workhouse, no money here, no private organizations. 3. Hi Olwyn, Thanks for your reply. The George Pegg I have was 71 when buried in 1835 in Stoke Golding so born about 1764. Susanna Hilton his wife was born 1766, so I think the George you have found born 1775 is probably another family. I have a record to the fact that she was a widow and they were married by licence. due to back record keeping I cannot remember where I got this information from. Can anyone help me? Elizabeth says on various census that she was born in Fleckney but the Emmersons are not listed in the parish records that I have. 3. Hi again Frank? Firstly the details you have are not proven so do keep an open mind Just a suggestion, then as now there were people who would make money any way they could, "arranging" adoptions was one of them, I do not know when legal adoption started in the USA but here it was not until 1927 , I take it you have checked for any documentation in the USA re adoption? (I am sure you have) You have to ask how does a child between 1 and 4 get to the USA without a great deal of help and money The story of a mother in the workhouse would cover the tracks quite well I don't think you answered my question, how do you know he was born in Leicestershire? What was the clue? These are the female ASKEWs of child bearing age in Leicestershire 1851 census Eliza Askew abt 1835 Leire, Leicestershire, England Lodger Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire Elizabeth Askew abt 1830 North Wingfield, Derbyshire, England Daughter Alexton, Leicestershire Elizabeth Askew abt 1826 Brinklow, Warwickshire, England Daughter Monks Kirby and Brockhurst, Leicestershire Sarah Askew abt 1823 St Margaret, Leicestershire, England Daughter Leicester St Margaret, Leicestershire Sarah Askew abt 1837 Leire, Leicestershire, England Sister Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire Susannah Askew Henry abt 1831 Knighton, Leicestershire, England Wife Leicester St Mary, Leicestershire Harriet Hall [Harriet Askew] abt 1822 All Saints, Derbyshire, England Wife Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire I am not sure it will do you any good though, none appear to be in a workhouse but circumstances changed rapidly so the week after the census they may have been Short of DNA I think you are going to have a time trying to find or prove the link Good luck in your search Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > To All: this little one had a Mother whowas in a workhouse, no money > here, no private organizations. > > He was born about 1851, was in Al, USA, by the age of 3. > > Family says that he was adopted in Troy AL by a Dr. Miller. > > Sure wish I could find more on his family, I do thank the 3 or 4 of you > who have responded this day and so quickly at that. 3. Hi frandbak ,      I'd be very skeptical about a family story during the Victorian period (with all apologies to the Queen) that involve the birth of a child.  It could easily be a story intended to disugise the history of a child born out of wedlock.  There were no international adoption agencies in those days, how would a child get from Leicestershire to Alabama.  I would check the U.S. Federal Census to see where it says the child was born as well as 1880 where it asks where the child's father and mother were born.  I would also check the cenusus for the period when he was old enough to supply his own information, does it change.  Also, any record that might ask where he was born or the names of his parents, like military or death records.       I live in the U.S. so there are probably people in Leicestershire who can give you better advice but I'd check the 1851 census in Leicestershire for Askews and also city directories for that period if they exist.  Still, I wouldn't invest a lot of time looking in Leicestershire, you could spend years looking and if the story isn't true, you'll be wasting your time.  I'd true to prove or disprove the story first, family stories are notorious for redirecting people away from family scandles.                                                                                                                 Jim ----- Original Message ---- From: frandbak <frandbak@bellsouth.net> To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, July 28, 2008 8:29:23 PM Subject: [LEI] 3year old born in England Charles Askew.
