    3. "I apologise to anyone who received my previous email, it was sent out with an incorrect email address by myself". Hello to all fellow researchers I have just been given some amazing information on the Dunmore Family Tree, from a very kind person called Peter Hill. There is only one problem. The information Peter had been given was from a gentleman called Phil Stevens and he gave his email address as philgstevens@ntlworld.com but, unfortunately when I tried to contact Phil on this email address it bounces back. Does anyone know the correct email address for this person, in order for me to contact him direct for a copy of a document called Gedcom, which he gave Peter and about 20 other Dunmore Family Tree Researchers. Any assistance would be very much appreciated. With kind regards. Irene Young (nee Dunmore)

    3. Hi David I was looking at the tree to see if I could take the generations back further than William and Mary but I can't from Essex. I wonder if they moved from another area or if the Church Registers have been destroyed. Do we know if someone has tried the settlement and removal papers for Cotterill and also that the P.R. is intact. If not have the Bishops Transcripts been accessed? Thanks for your help. 1. Re: [LEI] Lookup
    2. Irene Thank you very much. The problem is we have two Eliza Brays born in 1812 and one buried in 1818. The remaining one married a chap called Kettle in Scraptoft on 16/11/1830, unfortunately before the GRO start date. I forgot to look at the PR when I was there last week (mea culpa). We have no evidence as to which Eliza died, the burial record does not give the parents. Could you let me know who the witnesses were, it might give a clue. I live in Huntingdon so if I can be of any help there do ask. Best wishes Jim Rushton

    3. Hi Andy,      There is an article in the Leicestershire Historian which claims that gravestone were't common until the 18th century and came into use in the 17th (1600s).  Probably the early people with gravestones were yeoman and the village better off.   The article is "Exploring Leicestershire’s Churchyards-Part 2 by Alan McWhirr " and can be downloaded at   http://www.le.ac.uk/lahs/publications/historian.html      The Historian is published by the Leicestershire Archaeological & Historical Society.                                                                                                                                            Jim ----- Original Message ---- From: samiun <samiun@ntlworld.com> To: leicestershire-plus-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, August 26, 2008 5:18:28 PM Subject: [LEI] Oldest Grave When l was a child in the 1970s l went on a school trip to visit one of the oldest marked graves in the county. 1. Re: [LEI] Oldest Grave
    2. Hi Andy Down here in Sussex I have noticed a few really really old grave markers made of wood. I wonder if wood was a common material for memorials way back when and obviously didn't last. In my local church we also have lots of iron markers (inside and outside of the church) that date back to the early 1600's. They are still just about readable. These of course would have been for landowners etc. I think maybe memorials grew more popular with the Victorians? It's a very interesting question :) Em samiun <samiun@ntlworld.com> wrote: When l was a child in the 1970s l went on a school trip to visit one of the oldest marked graves in the county. If you try your library and see if they have a subscription to the Gale database of 19th Century British Library Newspapers, I know Manchester has some coverage definitely I do not see anything obvious in the Times but that is no great surprise Do not be to shocked if you do not find one though as they are not the norm in this Country Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can anyone recommend a site for looking up obituaries for the beginning of > May 1832. 2. derek cousins
    3. I am searching for Eaves Street in either Woodhouse Eaves or Woodhouse. According to the 1871 census Eliza Amelia FLAVELL was working for Samuel CLOWES and his family. Samuel CLOWES was MP for Sutton on the Hill Derbyshire and Eliza FLAVELL was a scullery maid in his house. Sarah PAYNE was also a nurse in the house and I believe she may have been related to the FLAVELLS by marriage. There were, at that time three houses in the road, the other one being inhabited by William RUSTON and his family. Can anyone throw any light on where the road is or was please? I would love to know why Eliza had moved from Birmingham to work in Leicestershire as her family were quite well off though her father had died of TB at that time. Stephanie

    1. Re: [LEI] Charles TODD
    2. Sue King
    3. Many thanks to Paul and Jean for your suggestions. Paul, I must admit Lydia Towler does seem a likely candidate, I can't find any hint of their marriage and would be grateful for ideas where to go from here. Where would I go to find parish records for a possible marriage? I also suppose they may not have been actually married but Lydia just took his name, in which case I am stumped. Jean, I have Charles' birth certificate and am as sure as I can be that Ann Woodcock is his mother. It appears she had 3 illegitimate children, Arthur William Seamons Todd (the Seamons is only recorded on the baptism record and I believe is a hint to his parentage, and is my gt gt grandfather) and then Charles and Henry Todd who were twins. The only clue I have that they belong to the same Ann is that as you rightly point out on the 1871 census they are with their grandparents, William and Amelia and I know they are Ann's parents. I also can find no hint of Lydia in 1901 - which I know is not unusual as the index is not 100% accurate so unless I can solve the marriage mystery it seems I am stuck for the minute. Thanks for the fast response from you both, Regards, Sue King
