    3. For 1858 and later see http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills Some years of calendar indexes can be found at Ancestry.com and a short term subscription may be a less expensive option than getting the copies whilst visiting the UK. For pre 1858 the situation is more complicated and not all wills are to be found in a central location. Keep in mind only a small proportion of the population thought to have a will. Sue, Most, if not all, of the Probate Records for Leicestershire have been microfilmed by the LDS and can be ordered into your local LDS family history library in Brisbane for A$7.75 a microfilm. < https://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=topicdetails&subject=453780&subject_disp=England%2C+Leicester+-+Probate+records&columns=*,0,0 > The records on Ancestry will have come from LDS microfilming projects of the past. 3. Hi Sue, If there is a connection with Leicestershire or Rutland, it would be worth searching the Record Office on-line catalogue here: <http://record-office-catalogue.leics.gov.uk/dserve/> If you visit the Record Office when you're here, ask at the desk in Search Room 2 and they will direct you to the index of wills. This is mainly useful for the pre-1858 wills. For later wills, do as others have suggested. 3. Hi Sue Much would depend on the years you are interested in 1858 is the major change point, 1858 onwards wills are indexed Nationally and the place to check is are the Probate Calendars Ancestry have 1861 to 1941 (less two gaps, 1899 to 1902 and 1910 & 1911) Copies of wills 1858 onwards can be obtained from one place and are as easily ordered from abroad as anywhere, nowhere can you get a copy over the counter these days as far as I am aware If before 1858 wills were proved in a variety of places depending on circumstances, location of assets, value of estate etc etc If in the years 1796 - 1903 a good place to start are the Death Duties Indexes, available on findmypast, they are not indexed so its a matter of searching the relevant years to see if your name is listed, if it is it will tell you where the will was probated It is also worth checking the Prerogative Court of Canterbury wills (1384 - 1858) on the National Archives, its a free search and downloadable wills for a small fee I would also suggest reading the research guides on the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/atoz/w.htm# Let us know where and what period you are researching Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi there > > I am coming over to the UK in May and would like to obtain some Wills. 3. Hi List I have traced my grandfather's family back to Bagworth via Snarestone to Thomas GOWTAGE who was born abt 1796 in Bagworth. I have found one possible baptism in Thornton in Jan 1976 but the IGI baptism record gives a death in April the following year. The family surname changed to GOWTRIDGE later on but some branches still kept GOWTAGE. The baptism record has the surname GOWDRIDGE. If the Bagworth folk were not baptised in Thornton, where else is likely? My grandfather was a member of the local Wesleyan Chapel so his ancestors may have been non-conformists. Does anyone on the list have any of this family on their tree? Or make any suggestions as to how I can get back beyond Thomas? 2. Hello Susan, Looking at 1901 Census, Harriett Silverwood ran a shop at Langton House, Dunton Street, Leicester.? Her husband worked as a yarn dyer. In 1911 they were living at 25 Dannett Street, Leicester.? No reference to a shop. From 1940 to 1944, I lived next to the corner of Dominion Road/Liberty Road on the outskirts of Glenfield.? The only shop in the area at that time was on that particular corner (building now converted to a house).? There were no shops that I recall in Liberty Road and certainly not one in the present location of No.19. As Amy was only 16/17 in 1911, the years you are looking for are probably 1915 onwards. I've looked at trade directories for 1914 and 1916 but there is nothing relevant in them. I think that electoral registers and trade directories for later years probably the most likely sources. 3. Hi Lou If the child drew breath there should be a birth registration and likewise a death registration No matter how disposed of there should still be both registrations even if no burial, it is possible if unnamed the birth is registered as "male" MILLS or "female" MILLS But as in all things if humans are involved there is scope for errors to creep into the system I have a case of a birth in 1848 that was not registered or at least I have not found one, the death is registered, two years later the same couple had another child and named him the same as the deceased child, his birth is registered, so it looks as if the birth was not registered until two years after the death To add to the sorry tale, he dies/emigrates/disappears into thin air at the age of some 24 years , never to be seen again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) My mum told me that she had a child before she had me. But he died in hospital a few days after he was born (this would have been around 1943). She never knew what happened to the baby as the hospital "took care of everything" in disposing of the body. I've never bothered to see if my brother was registered, either at birth or death, but I suspect that if the hospital "took care of everything" there was no burial record. My mother was never told what the hospital had done with the infant. Now, this was down in Kent during World War II, but I've always wondered if my mother's experience was the norm for those times. It's also possible my mother's memory of how long he lived may be exaggerated, but still, I'd like to know what happened. Lou

    3. Jack, thank-you, that's very kind. Looks like my Grandad was buried separately and the second child is in a different plot (or unlisted). As Ethel is the only one on the 1901 census, this other child must have been born - and died - between 1901 and 1911. Could it be that Mary died in childbirth? I always thought she died in the TB epidemic, could it be that the child did as well? I know I probably need to order Mary's death certificate but can SKS advise me on how to find out more about this 2nd child? I've looked in the birth records but they don't list mother's maiden name at this time like they do later on. All help appreciated. Thanks!
