    3. Hi Nivard Thanks for your reply. I'm clutching at straws here and hoping he would be in barracks. I wasn't sure at what age lads could join up or if there was a Leicestershire Regiment. If he was in the army in 1855 he had left by 1861 You're right - in 1861 he was a bricklayers labourer, in 1871 a labourer, in 1874 on arrival in NZ a farm labourer and on his death cert in 1877 a labourer. Not many clues to finding him in 1841 or 1851 other than he was possibly born in Leeds, father John, mother maybe Elizabeth. He was born in Leeds in 1833 and was married in Leicester to Sarah Ann SHARMAN. I would like to know if there was a regiment in Leicester in the 1850's and where would I look for soldiers in the 1851 census. Barbara

Hello Darren, Elizabeth Bakewell Bapt: 1 Nov 1788 was the eldest daughter of Richard Bakewell and Elizabeth Mann (5th Daughter of George Mann) I don't have the marriage of Samuel Burdett but I do have a copy of the Birth & Baptism of their eldest daughter-- Jane Born 20 Nov 1809. Bapt 22 Nov 1809 ( both dates on the record) at St. Mary. Melton Mowbray. Samuel is said to be the son of Samuel Burdett of Ashley. Northamptonshire. I will email you a copy if thats acceptable. My connection to the Bakewells is through Richard and his brother John, they are half brothers to my ancestor Thomas Spur(r) and his brother William and sister Bridget. Richards parents are Abraham Bakewell and his 2nd wife Bridget Spur formerly Jenkinson. 3. Hi again Because of the way the Army works he is likely to have left the Army before or just after marriage (marriage whilst in the Army would be very limited and he had children all in Leicestershire) I doubt he was in service long enough to get a pension The Leicestershire Regiment or the 17th Regiment of Foot was in the Crimea around that time There was one Private John SMITH 3094 who was entitled to the Crimea medal However there were many more John SMITHs in the Army, there is no absolute connection between the birthplace or residence of a man and the Regiment he served in so your John SMITH could as easily have served in any Regiment Many of the PRs for Leeds are on Ancestry and I have checked all those baptised in the period with a father John, none were a confectioner (mind you the father could quite easily have changed jobs between 1841 and 1855, if John did not invent the occupation of course) The best I could find with a confectioner connection is the following who may be the father 1851 England Census about John Smith Name: John Smith Age: 43 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1808 Relation: Partner Gender: M (Male) Where born: Hatton, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Leeds Town: Leeds County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Leeds Sub-registration district: South ED, institution, or vessel: 2b Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 56 Piece: 2319 Folio: 251 Page Number: 15 Household Members: Name Age Joseph Harley 69 Elizabeth Harley 27 Susan Harley 25 John Smith 43 confectioner (partner in trade) Martha Smith 43 Anna Smith 15 James Smith 11 Ann Smith 3 Ellis Leadbeater 28 Hannah Leadbeater 30 Hannah Leadbeater 5 HO107; Piece: 2319; Folio: 251; Page: 15; GSU roll: 87542-87544. Your John could easily be working away by then Where were you drawing the mothers name Elizabeth from? Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > Hi Nivard > > Thanks for your reply. 3. Hi Barbara Soldiers would be enumerated in the normal way if in England, Scotland or Wales, if abroad they may not be If your man is the Bricklayers Labourer in Leicester in 1861 aged 27, he would presumably be 17 in 1851, which would be young for a soldier in 1851 and if he were its unlikely he would be overseas I do not see a John SMITH as a soldier anywhere in the census in 1851 of the right age, the nearest is one born 1827 who is in Lancashire So if he is a soldier in 1855 its unlikely that he was in 1851, do you know what the fathers occupation was on the three childrens births who are with their parents in 1861? Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire Samuel's parents were possibly: Samuel BURDETT b. 1762, Bringhurst, Market Harborough, Leicestershire m. 3. In 1875 my gg grandfather, Benjamin Hubbard, was "elected to be one of the poor of the Hospital of the Holy Trinity at the Newak near the Borough of Leicester ........... and to receive and partake of the Benefits of the said hospital." I have Benjamin's admission letter which I received from the Leicestershire Rutland Record Office. So, now I have a thirst for more information. Would anyone know if there are more records I could obtain which would indicate his health or what benefits he may have received? I'm pretty sure that he lived at home. I know that married men were allowed to live at home and I have records showing him living in Derby from 1879 to his death in 1889. Janice Massachusetts, USA

Hannah is enumerated as unmarried in 1851 and is with her parents Joseph & Elizabeth , likewise in 1861 If anyone has access to the PRs for Orton it would be much appreciated as a father is noticeably absent throughout Ann b1843 disappears after 1851 but I can track Samuel & George thereafter Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

    3. Hi Ken, If his is the death in 1853 that Paul Roberts found, then the puzzle can easily be explained. Mary gave her father's occupation according to what she had been told, not from personal knowledge. Deceased fathers are often not recorded as such on marriage certificates because either the bride didn't volunteer the information or the vicar didn't ask. My grandmother's father died before her 2nd birthday and when I found the marriage entries of her siblings, they all had different ideas about their father's occupation! Hope that helps, Lesley -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Ken Stanger Hi, Can anyone help with a Richard WESTBROOK . 3. Hi Ken The marriage cert merely refects what the informant gave They said he *was* a soldier The fact that he was also a pensioner at some point does not stop him from having once been a soldier If an informant said their father was a brain surgeon, that is what would be on the cert, no one would check the validity of the statement If the right question was not asked they may not have mentioned he was deceased at the time of the marriage Have you checked the Chelsea Pension records for your man?
