Hi Everyone, Following on from my recent discovery that my gggg-grandfather was apparently born at Griffydam about 1766, I wonder if anyone has access to parish records that cover Griffydam at that period and is willing to do a lookup for his birth or baptism to prove or disprove this discovery. If anyone can help I will be most grateful. Regards John Poxon
In my reply to Jon Poxon via this list I should have added that Huntingdon Beaumont, younger brother of Sir Henry Beaumont of Coleorton Hall, has been credited with building the first tramway, in 1604, to transport coal from Beaumont's Nottinghamshire pits to a more convenient place for onward movement by road. I remember from John's postings to the Nottinghamshire rootsweb list that his Poxon ancestors lived in and around the Cossall area. Beaumont's coal mines were around the Strelley and Cossall area. I don't know whether or not the Beaumont's owned them in the late 18th century, but it could be that John's ancestor moved from one Beaumont mine to another. Brian Binns
John, That area around Coleorton, Newbold and Griffydam was the birthplace of mining in Leicestershire, with the Beaumonts of Coleorton Hall being instrumental in funding and developing it. We are talking about the 1600's here, and the name Coleorton is indeed a corruption of the words Cole (coal) Orton (Overtown). I have read that there were 15 pits around Coleorton in 1779, but I would imagine that these would have been either drift mines or fairly shallow shafts. It could be that your ancestor was a miner in this area before moving to Nottingham. The coal measures around this area also gave rise to the first steam railway in Leicestershire, the Leicester and Swannington, built by Robert Stephenson. A fascinating and interesting area and worth reading about. Hi, Jon, I live in the USA and share some of your frustration with being so far away from records you are dying to examine! However, my relatives of interest lived at a much later time in the area you are searching--mid to late 1800s and early 1900s. I know the Coalville librarians are busy but extremely nice about research help. I think they have a research fee schedule, if you want to go that route. I don't remember what the fee is, but a quick e-mail should tell you. I also have found that if you ask very nicely by e-mail, and DON'T ABUSE THE PRIVILEGE, the librarians sometimes will do very limited free look-ups if you provide clear and concise details of what you want to know. When I asked my question, it took a little longer than usual (for e-mail) to get an answer because the librarian was looking up the answer when she had time on her lunch break. (I also was asking for details on a capital offense and trial. Perhaps the librarian was very intrigued! Because I provided the exact arrest and trial dates, she had limited local newspapers to search through.) If you cannot find SKS to go to Coalville Library on your behalf, e-mail is always worth a try. Good Luck! Hi Many councils, especially small cities or villages, in France will reply only if you provide them with a stamped envelope with your address on it. Did you join some to your requests? Have you tried the telephone books? Someone suggested Facebook. may you could also try www.copainsdavant.com. it is not as messy as FB. Best regards Anthony
Hi List, Is there some kind person who is willing and able to check the Family Notices for me for 1985 please ? details off list. Many thanks Daphne. New Zealand.
Hi Daphne The Times online is one of the Gale databases and luckily for you runs up to 1985 You may find your library has a subscription but if not let me know and I can take a look as our Cornwall library does All Australian residents have access to it via their National Library I wondered if New Zealand offered the same? The project has concentrated on out-of-copyright material pre-dating 1900, but we are negotiating with a number of rightsholders to obtain permission to digitise a range of more recent newspaper runs from the early to mid-20th century. A recent deal signed with the publishing company Northcliffe means a large selection of regional and local titles up to 1950 covering both world wars is available today and the site will continue to grow as newly-scanned pages are uploaded, from this and other collections. The Leicester Mercury between 1972 and 1980 is not available and will still be under copyright with their publishers. I would suggest that you contact the publishers directly if you are looking for a specific article and they may be able to advise further.
