    3. I am very sorry to hear of Keith's passing - we had so much contact over the last 8 years searching for the CORAH family in Leicestershire. Is there some way of passing on condolences to his family? Thank you Jane and Alison for letting us know. We who worked with him on the WILLETT family regret to announce he died on June 10, 2012 in Malta at the age of 46 years after a brave fight. We shall miss his cheerful "Thanks a million" and humble requests that he called 'pestering.' Thanks to his persistence we obtained a great deal of information about the family back to the 1600's and on a wider scale as we researched in countries throughout the world. R.I.P Keith HAMMOND I was in contact with Keith during 2005 and 2006 regarding a common distant relation.  He was always very helpful and will indeed be missed very much.  It was always a pleasure to see his name on this Leicestershire List. 3. Thanks David. I need a "live letter" from the Leicester Mercury It was included by Mrs P Reeve. From July to November 1980. A mother wrote about her family emigrating to Australia. Also a "live letter" could be any time from 1972 ---- 1978 could be" Society getting what it deserves" written by a Mother thinking society makes it impossible to be a mother . included by G A Goddard. I realize this was a daily paper, live letters ( letters to the editor) were included every day. I remember from John's postings to the Nottinghamshire rootsweb list that his Poxon ancestors lived in and around the Cossall area. Beaumont's coal mines were around the Strelley and Cossall area. I don't know whether or not the Beaumont's owned them in the late 18th century, but it could be that John's ancestor moved from one Beaumont mine to another. 3. Hi Brian, Thank you for your help and the information you provided below. I had become aware of some of the information you provided by searching the Internet over the past 24 hours. I understand (perhaps incorrectly) that parish records for Leicestershire are purchasable from Leicestershire Archives, so I am hoping someone either has them or knows the Worthington records can be examined at Coalville, and will do a lookup for me. Using Google Earth I have 'driven' around Griffydam and believe it must have been a deadly boring place two hundred and twenty years ago. No wonder Joseph headed off to the big smoke of Nottingham to work in the mines! Still, boring or not I'll place it on my itinerary for my next trip to England. Regards John -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Brian Binns Sent: Monday, 11 June 2012 5:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LEI] Request for Lookup of Birth/Baptism of Joseph Poxon/Pogson at Griffydam Circa 1765/6 John, It looks like Griffydam is in the parish of Worthington. Although I live in Leicestershire I didn't know this, and whilst I appreciate that you live in Australia, this information was easily found on the internet. There is a wealth of info on GENUKI sites, and this told me that Griffydam is a hamlet, which by general definition in England denotes a habitation not containing a church. This following link gives details of all the hamlets contained within Worthington Parish http://uk-genealogy.org.uk/england/Leicestershire/towns/Worthington.html The Leicestershire libraries site indicates that Worthington Parish records are held on microfiche in Coalville Library. So if you can find some kind soul who visits this library then they may be able to help you. Sadly I do not go there. The records would also be held in the Leics. Archives. 3. Further to the posting below, there is another Joseph Poxon, Christened 16 June 1765, who is a better fit. His parents were John and Susannah, though their surname was spelled Poxen. Again the original entry should be checked. Brian Binns From: Brian Binns [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 11 June 2012 16:06 To: '[email protected]' Subject: Poxon In reply to John Poxon's request - I presume he is tucked up in bed in Oz by now - I have found a Joseph Poxon christening on the IGI in the parish of Worthington - 23 Aug 1768 - parents William and Hannah. This is within a couple of years of the Joseph that John was seeking. It would still need a look at the original to see if this parish and more particularly this parish clerk recorded the abode of the parents, to be absolutely sure that these were from Griffydam. Some clerks did record it, and some didn't. If the abode was not recorded for this Christening it is always worth while checking on any siblings' Christenings before and after, as the recording of parents' abode was a bit hit and miss. 3. Ahhh, reflections of a "new age".  Our youngsters see their hometown as a kind of a prison and long to escape.  But our ancestors stayed in place many years because of family and work.  It was only when better pay or the lure of "free land" to own in the colonies that they pulled up roots.  Some of my relatives today still haven't traveled more than 60 miles from their place of birth.  It makes them easy to track!     Lou ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2012 17:57:32 +1000 From: "John Poxon" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [LEI] Request for Lookup of Birth/Baptism of Joseph     Poxon/Pogson at Griffydam Circa 1765/6 -snip- Using Google Earth I have 'driven' around Griffydam and believe it must have been a deadly boring place two hundred and twenty years ago.  No wonder Joseph headed off to the big smoke of Nottingham to work in the mines! ________________________________
