    3. In that same vein, Nivard, one of the things I value most is the audio tape of my mother talking about her youth in London and the World War II bombings she experienced.  She is crying a lot, and her English accent is quite strong as she reminisces about things, but now that she has passed on, it's a part of her memory I don't want to let go of. If folks haven't taped their relatives yet, NOW is a good time.  Even if they don't want to talk much, just ask them some open questions about their school days or first job.  It's so worth it, I can't find words enough to recommend it.     Lou ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 21 Mar 2014 09:50:57 +0000 From: Nivard Ovington <ovington.one@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [LEI] Oral Archive To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com Hi Mick Thanks for that but I searched the various links before without finding anything I searched for Great Central Railway and got 8 hits, none for your man, I also tried just HAINES but the only one I came across was a Brian HAINES I must be searching in the wrong place or for the wrong things Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)

    1. [LEI] James family of Burton Lazars and Barrow on Soar
    2. JOHN GOSLING
    3. Hello, First time poster to this list, hello to everyone. Hope this message finds you all well. I'm researching the James family of Burton Lazars and surrounding area, and was wondering if anyone has a similar interest? My wife's great great grandfather was John James, born 26th April 1840 in Burton Lazars. By 1871 John had moved his family to Wolverton in Buckinghamshire, where I suspect he was employed at the huge Wolverton railway works. Certainly his son went into the works. All I know of John's profession is that he was a carpenter. John's father was Samuel James, born 1804, baptised Barrow on Soar. His mother was Mary Burnsnall. I've got a nice photograph of their very ornate gravestone. Samuel was a Grazier with 12 acres of land. I've also got his will. He pops up a few times in the papers of the time, for various petty offences like letting his animals stray. Going back another generation, I believe Samuel's parents were Samuel James (born 25th Aug 1757 in Barrow on Soar) and Elizabeth Bradford (Born 1762 in Quorn). Samuel's parents might well have been Valentine James (1736 in Barrow on Soar -1822) and Ann Humber (1731-1813) Then back to John James (1701 in Barrow on Soar -1783) and Mary Goude (1706-1775) Hope that information is of interest. If anyone has connection and would like to see a more detailed account of the James family that I have compiled, I would be delighted to pass that along. Regards, John

I was in it, on the Parks Dept. sports float, along with a school friend. I was a hockey player and my friend a tennis player. Subject of some amusement back at school from others who knew we were/are still not interested in sport. I tried to play the video but it wouldn't work properly. I saw lots of soldiers, over and over again, and at least confirmed from the rain-proof outfits worn by the crowd that it WAS raining, if only intermittently. I remember when we were exchanging nostalgic email someone said they didn't remember it raining. My reply emails keep disappearing in this new system so I'll quit while I'm ahead! 3. Thank you to all those who replied both on the list and direct to my email. It seems there was a problem mainly with three London offices but also with a couple of provincial where it to some extent depended on who was contacted. In many cases the problems were with requests for marriage certificates but some offices refused requests for any "historic" certificate. Those who did supply the certificate gave them a low priority meaning longer wait times. Cheers Guy
