    1. Re: [LEI] Soars at Willenhall
    2. Dear Sue, Many thanks! Edward was an agricultural labourer in Countesthorpe, and continued to be one when he moved to Willenhall, although the sons that moved with him, or who were born after the move to Willenhall, did all worked in the locksmith trade. Edward is cited as a farmer in the marriage of one of his sons, Thomas (who became the Coroner of Canterbury under the name of JOHNSON), but I think that was a bit of poetic license! What intrigues me most, however, is why they should change their name to JOHNSON. The mystery continues! Best wishes, Judy (nee SOARS) Message: 1 Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2007 16:08:45 EDT From: SJEAST@aol.com Subject: [LEI] re Soars at Willenhall To: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <c57.1984f597.3439454d@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Hi Judy My husband informs me that Willenhall, Staffs. was developing as a world famous centre of the production of locks and keys at the time you mention, 1855-1860. This was brought about by a growth in banks and increase in the population. Yale locks began there for example. I don't know what occupations your family record but the answer may be found in the work they did. Even if they did not directly work at the lock and key factories, they may have had skills which supported the expansion of industrial growth there. It may be worth investigating. Best wishes Sue

    2. Francis Payne
    3. Here's an extremely long longshot. My grandfather Ted Wadsley ran the Harborough Hotel at Melton Mowbray from about 1908-1912. He left his wife and went to Canada with Dulcie, a barmaid from the hotel. Their outward passage lists them as Mr & Mrs Wadsley. On the other side Dulcie writes her correct name but the surname is unreadable. Dulcie was born c1890. They had a daughter Joan b1913 (thus my mother's sister and my aunt). Would be nice to know what became of her. Does anyone have this Dulcie in their family ?? Regards Francis Payne Auckland, New Zealand

    1. [LEI] Edward SOARS born about 1811 in Woodhouse
    2. Dear List, At the risk of overkill (2 messages in one day) I would like to know if anyone is researching the family of John SOARS and Hannah HARRIMAN, of Woodhouse. John and Hannah married in 1799 in Woodhouse, and to my knowledge had at least two children Emily (born 1813) and Mary (born 1816). My 4xgreat grandfather, Edward SOARS, was born in Woodhouse about 1811. However, to date I have been unable to find his parents. Given the birthdates of Emily and Mary, I am wondering if there is any connection between Edward and them i.e. is he a brother and therefore a son of John and Hannah. Certainly the names John, Mary and Hannah appear in Edward's own family from his marriage to Mary CAWREY, in 1836. If anyone is researching SOARS of Woodhouse, and can help me solve this mystery I would be very grateful! Best wishes, Judy Evans (nee SOARS)

    1. [LEI] Seeking advice - SOARS
    2. Dear List, I have sent versions of this story before, hoping for inspiration from some kind soul. In the hopes that new listers might be able to advise, here it is again! My SOARS family are from Leicestershire. My 4 x great grandfather, Edward SOARS, born in Woodhouse Eaves in approximately 1811, and his wife Mary CAWREY, born in Woodhouse in 1816, are to be found in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire in the 1841 and 1851 censuses with their large family. Countesthorpe is where I was born and brought up, and I am descended from Edward and Mary's son, John Cawrey SOARS, born 1837. Edward, Mary and some of their children re-located to Willenhall, in Staffordshire, sometime between 1855 and 1861. I base this on the fact that several children are christened, en masse, in Countesthorpe in 1855, but by the time of the 1861 census Edward, Mary and some of the children are in Willenhall, under the surname of JOHNSON! I can confirm it is indeed them as I have located them in subsequent censuses, and they have variously used the surname JOHNSON, SOARS-JOHNSON and SOARS JOHNSON (i.e. no hyphen) as well as SOARS. Edward died in 1890 and is registered under the name Edward SOARS. How I actually found them makes a great story. Just picture the 'eureka' moment at the Family History Centre in London, having scanned yards of microfilm on a hunch that they were there because of a SOARS visitor to my Countesthorpe family in the 1901 census who was from Willenhall! I am fascinated to understand why they did this, but to date have been unable to find any information. Can anyone suggest where I might look? Hopeful that someone can help, Judy Evans (nee SOARS).

Would be nice to know what became of her. If Joan is your mother's full sister, then you surely already have Dulcie's surname. If they are half sisters, have you checked with FreeBMD for all Dulcies born around 1890? What about the 1891 and 1901 censuses? Have you tried for Joan's birth certificate?

    3. Hi Anne Oh PLEASE don't <g> All roll calls are a waste of time, about as much use as a "Test" message :-) Why not simply post an enquiry instead ? As there are many people on the list who know Leicestershire well, why not a question about the homes, farms or places of work in and around Leicestershire If not that then perhaps the brickwall you have If you have a great grandpa you want to know more about, why not post that question ? Roll calls are the biggest waste of bandwidth ever. If you want a roll call type of thing then sites like GenesReunited are a bettter option. Far better to place messages on this list that include all the details you currently know about the person you would like to know MORE about. There are many with resources just waiting for the chance to assist others to break through a research impasse or two. Keith Wellington, NZ

    1. Re: [LEI] BURGESS- GAMBLE_ COLLEDGE - Family
    2. Hi Sue, In both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses Ada BURGESS, born about 1875 in Enderby, was a servant, living at the addresses of her employers. In Leicester (22 Market Place) in 1901 and in Blaby (Leicester Road) in 1891. I can give you more details of the employers if you want them. In 1881, while Ada (niece), aged 6, was living with the family of Thomas and Mary Ann COLLEDGE in Marsdens Lane, Leicester, there was an Emma BURGESS, born about 1853 in Enderby, working as a General Servant with the family of Charles BOWLES, a master clothier and outfitter, at 5 Brighton Villas, Princes Street, Leicester. Emma was described as 'unmarried' but she is the only Emma Burgess that I can find that looks anything like a likely person. The Births Index lists the birth of Ada BURGESS in the Oct/Nov/Dec Quarter of 1874 in the registration district of Blaby, Area 7a, Page 33. I have searched 1875 and 1876 and this birth is the only likely match. Blaby is the correct Reg. Dist. for Enderby. I can't find any sort of match for a James BURGESS in the 1881 Census. There is a James GAMBLE but he is a married quarryman (about 30 something) living with his family in Enderby. If you already have Ada's birth certificate then you probably know more than I do. If you haven't got the cert. I think you are going to have to send for it. If you do decide to get the cert., let me know and I will double check the references before you apply. Also, let me know if you want any more information or if you have anything that might help any of the searches. Regards, Jack Allen. Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, U.K.
