Hi Sue Thanks for the update notice. A month or so ago I published BROADHURST OF ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH, a family history that I have been working on for years. You provided some information along the way that was very helpful, including local information about LEI and ADLZ. Here is a link to the info: http://www.lulu.com/content/1225916 After the book came out I wrote to the LRFHS, to someone listed on their website, to offer a copy of the book and I never heard from anybody. I wonder if they had old email addresses on their site. Anyway I wrote to the Pres and Sec [as listed on the site) today to offer to provide an electronic PDF copy of the book if they had online resources capability, or a hard copy sent across the ocean if they prefer. However it occurred to me that I did not consider whether there was a resource library closer, perhaps the Ashby Museum if they deal with family history resources. Or...? If you or others on the list have any ideas on where to archive this resource for posterity I would be grateful for the suggestion. I am looking for any information on Mary Hardy that married Richard Pratt about 1787 in Croft. Leicestershire. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Marianne Dillow Illinois, USA

Hello, Looking for information and any family of William Hammond born about 1791, Kent England, Isle of Sheppy. 1841 census there is no wife. Eight children listed.
Can anyone help me to break down my brick walls ? I am looking for information to help me find the following - 1) Birth/Baptism of SOPHIA ROGERS - c1782 Sophia married JOHN BRADSHAW at St Mary's Nottingham on 25 October 1803 where they had two children born/baptised. By 1813 they had moved to Quorndon (John's place of birth) where they raised their family & where Sophia died in January 1849 aged 66. The 1841 Census indicates that she was not born in Leicestershire - so where/when ? 2) Birth/Baptism of JOHN SLACK - c1756 John married MARY DEXTER at Belton on 2 July 1786 before moving to Shepshed, where he died in April 1833 aged 76. He presumably was a man of some means as he is listed on the 1823 Shepshed Valuation as occupying a house with area 1p and valuation 14s.0d, but where/when he was born is a mystery. 3) Marriage of EDWARD BROTHERHOOD and ELIZABETH ? - c1744 I have details of the baptisms & burials of varous children of Edward and Elizabeth (including my direct ancestor JOHN BROTHERHOOD bapt. 25 March 1750) at Barrow Upon Soar between 1745 and 1765 but their marriage alludes me. Any help would be appreciated. TIA. Derek Bradshaw.

Many Noble descendants for many years have searched for their immigrant ancestor Thomas Noble's parents in England. Below is a description of some of my research. I would be truly grateful if anyone who is interested in the Noble name and family who may be able to provide me with more info would e-mail me. I feel that Leicestershire may hold some answers. Thank you. Ted Noble Gualala Ca In 1991-92, I engaged the services of a professional British genealogist, Ian Hilder, B.A. (Hons.) to research the English origin of Thomas Noble. He did an outstanding job of investigating all pertinent genealogical records to find a likely ancestral tie-in. While nothing conclusive was ever found, his work did turn up some very interesting leads. In the wills of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC Wills), Hilder located one for a London (St. Giles, Cripplegate) pin maker named Thomas Noble. The pin makers were found to be members of the Merchant Tailors Guild. The will was proved in 1649/50 and named a son, Thomas, to receive an inheritance at age 21. Research in the parish records of St. Giles, Cripplegate, revealed that this Thomas, son of the pin maker, was born in 1635-36, making him 14 or 15 years old at the time of his father's death. He would have had, in the judgement of Mr. Hilder, considerable knowledge of the tailoring trade and likely would have begun an apprenticeship in that trade. In the card files of the Society of Genealogists, London, Mr. Hilder located a record of research by a noted British genealogist named Cotton for a Utah woman in 1963, that settled on Thomas Noble, the pin maker, as a likely choice for the father of our Massachusetts Thomas Noble. Efforts to locate this woman by correspondence at the address given in 1963, failed. If Thomas Noble, son of the London pin maker, were indeed our Thomas Noble of Springfield/Westfield, he would have been only 17 years old upon his arrival in Boston in 1651/52. However, he would have been just 21 years old in 1656, the date of the entry in the John Pynchon Account Book that mentions Thomas' return to England. That was the date for the pin maker's son, Thomas, to claim his inheritance from the Executor of his father's estate. The will of Thomas Noble, the pin maker, mentioned a brother, Richard, of Owston, Leicestershire. If a will for this Richard could be found, it might possibly mention a nephew, Thomas, in New England. This was made a future research goal. During a recent visit to the LDS library in SAlt Lake, I pursued this lead with the results given below: Mr. Hilder, in his research efforts during the time he worked for me, reported that he had searched the International Genealogical Index for Leicestershire and found only one possibility for brothers named Thomas and Richard: 1587, Jan 16, Thomas, son of John Noble 1593, Sep 12, Richard, son of John Noble. Both of Gainsborough Parish. However, I found upon examination of the same IGI for the pertinent time period that Gainsborough Parish was situated in Lincolnshire, not Leicestershire. This was not discouraging, for adjoining Gainsborough was an Owston Parish, same spelling as the Leicester Owston. Calendars of Wills and Administrations at Lincoln, ed, E. W. Foster, Vol. 4., London British Record Society, 1930, p. 124, listed wills for John Noble, Mercer, Gainsborough, 1611, and for Richard Noble, Merchant, Barcroftes, Gainsborough, 1640-59. A search in the microfilm indexes in the British record section at LDS, led to the will of John, but not Richard. The will of Richard obviously exists, but it will require time to patiently go through microfilm. I received help in extracting the pertinent details of John Noble's will. Richard was the executor of the will. John left a substantial inheritance to his son Thomas provided Thomas continue in his father's trade, whatever that may have been. There were six sons and three daughters mentioned in JOhn's will. There is nothing in the will to either prove or disprove that Thomas became the London pin maker. Among the Gainsborough, Lincoln, wills, there is also a will for Ann Noble, wife of John, which was proved in 1660-1663. This will, like that of Richard needs to be searched out and read for any confirmation of her son's status or the possibility of a reference to her grandson Thomas in New England.

As I don't live in the UK, my next step is to order the films from the LDS and hope that I find some useful information there. ------------------------------------- Hello Sandra, The fact that you found nothing in The National Archives (TNA) certainly does not indicate that neither of them left a will. As far as I know, the wills found in National Archives Documents Online are PCC (Prerogative Court of Canterbury) wills (meaning that a testator left real estate in more than one Diocese). TNA does not include wills of the Archdeaconry Court of Leicester, which would usually be your first port of call (instructions for finding those wills from LDS films in my earlier e-mail). If you find nothing there, the Diocesan (or Consistorial or Bishops') Court of Peterborough would be the next source to try - these wills also filmed by LDS. (The Archdiocese of Leicester belonged to the Diocese of Peterborough). Also worth checking Phillimore's "Atlas & Index of Parish Registers" to check which probate jurisdiction your parishes of interest came under. Gibson's "Probate Jurisdictions: Where to Look for Wills" explains the ecclesiastical courts' system, or this page gives a basic explanation: http://www.thefamilyhistoryproject.co.uk/get_started.php?id=10 Hope you find something via the LDS films. Sandra Wills proved locally (in your case at Leicester) will not be held at National Archives but at county Record Offices. You should still therefore contact the Record Office at Leicester, as previously suggested. They are extremely helpful and, if they have a matching will, they will be able to supply a copy to anywhere in the world for a modest fee plus postage charges.
