    1. [LEI] Looking for connections to Jean POWNALL in Leicester srea.
    2. silvercyn
    3. Hello, I am clutching at straws here to try and find out what happened to my cousin Jean Pownall. Jean was born in Wilmslow, Cheshire in 1936. The last time I saw was when she was a bridesmaid at my marriage in 1953. We lost touch after that. However, in the 1970's Jean's husband, who I do not know, called to see my mother in Bosley in Cheshire to tell her that Jean had passed away and he was on his way back to Leicester with his three young children. My mother gave me a very scant account of the visit because she was not at all well and died very soon after. I was led to understand that Jean and her husband were farming in the Leicester area. I have searched and contacted several men who married a Jean Pownall but not had any luck at all. My search has been severely hampered because I don't know Jean's married name. If anyone knew a Jean who heralded from Cheshire living in the Leicester area It would bring about the fall of my very high brick wall. Any help will be very much appreciated. Cynthia Edwards nee Pownall.

    3. I don't know if this a problem with the website or my computers settings, but when I go to the Leicestershire lookups exchange page http://uk.geocities.com/leicslookup/ all of the email addresses (including the one to contact the owners of the page) appear as a small white box with a red X in it. None of them open. I've seen these before on other pages, but usually in place of a picture. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how I can get the email addresses to appear? Sandra

    3. Hi Listers, I am relatively new to the list and have enjoyed being a part of this community. I have learned about several valuable search techniques and sites that I have noted for future use, just by reading your postings. I think I am ready to post my first inquiry. I hope this works! Does Royal Kent Street, St. Margaret's, Leicester, still exist? I am specifically interested in Number 9 address. I am looking for a 'period' picture of that area and/or a modern picture of Number 9 if it is still there. A relative, HENRY HAYWOOD, was born to Sarah Haywood at Number 9 Royal Kent Street on 28 January 1857. I live in Minnesota USA, and consequently, I know very little about the geography of Leicestershire! Thank you so much, Carolyn

    3. Could there have been a more sensitive duty to carry out in the 39/45 War than that of the telegraph boy? Not old enough for military service but certainly, in my eyes, doing a mans job. I well recall the day when one very tall lad, complete with pill box hat leaned his cycle against next the next door wall and delivered his telegram to # 47. A very short time later the distraught wife from next door came in with her two bewildered under school aged daughters waving the telegram which told her John, her husband, had been killed in Norway Amongst many others I will be remembering John and his family. He was the leading trombonist in the Ransome and Marles Brass Band (Ball Bearing manufacturers later to be bombed with the loss of 47 lives including my uncle Jim) Bless and remember them all

    2. Hi All, Hathern photo's now closed. I'm retaking photo's at most of the cemeteries done over the last few years. I will offer the whole cemetery as this work progresses; St Mary in the Elms, Woodhouse, St Leonard's, Swithland and St Michael's, Markfield have already been listed over the past few weeks. Retakes at St Peter's at Mountsorrel should be done this week. This initiative allows everyone access progressively to everything available, at the same time improves the collection through the advances of camera technology. These and new cemetery photographs are being cropped and put on the website by Sue Hargraves. regards Mick

    3. Hi Art, I suggest you contact the Record Office for Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland: <http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/community/museums/record_office.htm> E-mail: recordoffice@leics.gov.uk Since your book relates to Leicestershire, and especially to a specific area, I would think they would gratefully accept it and add it to the catalogue index for Ashby de la Zouch. The big advantage of the Record Office is that they have vaults for storing documents safely - something no local library in Leicestershire, or the Family History Society, can do. Depositing a hard copy would mean that it's likely to be be available for many years, or even centuries, in the future. Whether an electronic .pdf file on one of today's electronic media will survive in the same way is perhaps a little more questionable ;-) Just think - if you found a record that someone had produced, say, 30 years ago and stored in an electronic form of the day, what would you do with it ? Anyone remember 8 inch floppy disks ? If you decide to go down this path & the Record Office accept it, please let the List know. I would then be interested to see whether they catalogue it in a way that both family and local historians can find it easily !
