    3. Although not directly Leicestershire related, I've come across a very useful website which I'm sure will assist someone with their research. I was looking for when our ancestors' family firm ceased trading and someone directed me towards the London Gazette archives. Although the company was based in the north of the country, the details of its receivership were there in the London paper and helped complete another section of the family jigsaw. The link is http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/. Not having visited the site before, I used the Search Builder (under Historians header) and it was soooo straight forward to use. I would certainly recommend it (and it's free :-) ) Hope it helps someone Heather Q

    3. Hi Janet Calais Hill was near Granby St but has disappeared now. There are some houses in another street nearby (I think its York Street) and they are simple terraced houses. I wonder if 2 Swain Street was the Workhouse which later became some kind of nursing home called Hillcrest. What year did he die. 3. Hi Janet I do research the West family. But 1929 is far behind the period I do research (up to 1847). My West side used to come from Enderby, Thurlaston and Bassett House. I found him on Ancestry. If you can't find someone using the search the other option is to use the free images and search them yourself, quarter by quarter - start a couple of years before the date you have. It's incredibly tedious but I've found a few this way that have been mis-transcribed.. 3. Hi List Sorry if you receive this twice - I think I sent it to the wrong address the first time. I hope someone can give me some advice. I have a William GULSTON who appears as Abbot and Rector of Wymondham, Leics in 1538. He was presented to the Rectory in 1538 by the Prior and Convent of Tutbury (Staffs). Apparently this GULSTON family is the first recorded in Wymondham and I'm trying to find where the family was from prior to this generation. I read in an article that, if I can find the date of his ordination and by which Bishop he was ordained, the Bishop's records often show where he was from and the names of his parents. However, the Church of England Clergy Database doesn't have him listed so I don't have his ordination date or any more clerical details. Can anyone please give me an idea of where to go from here? Would all clergymen 'posted' to Leics churches have been ordained by a certain Bishop? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 3. Hi I am trying to find descendants of a family tree in Leicester going back to 1800. They were by name ALLEN in St Margarets but the children after their christian names were called either Purver Allen, who would have been the grandmother's maiden name, I have christian names followed by Bishop Allen, Grimes Allen, Stevenson Allen but cannot find where the Bishop or Grimes name comes into the family, although I have now placed Stevenson. Some are on the Welford Road Burial Index. Any help from anyone would be appreciated E Graeme fh840833fh@hotmail.co.uk ___________________________________________________________ Want ideas for reducing your carbon footprint? Visit Yahoo! 3. Hi Charles The easiest way to find out is to search on www.multimap.com or on maps.live.com, or even google maps, making sure you put in "leicester, England". There is also this page that I found the other day which you all might like: http://citystreatz.leicester.gov.uk/leicester_internet/CityStreatz%20web%20page.htm It allows you to search within the city of leicester on a variety of maps, some quite old. It takes a bit of effort to get the hang of it, but it's fascinating when you get going. Happy hunting!! Em PS - I found an East Kent Street but without the Royal, not sure if it's in St Margarets though. 3. Cynthia, Remember that Melton Mowbray is the registration district, which covers a far greater area than the town of Melton itself. Without spending time and cost phoning all the Brooks in the area, you perhaps would be better sending for the death certificate, which would show his address at the time of his death, and the name and address of the person who registered the death. Deaths would have to have been registered in the area where they happened, regardless of where the dead person actually lived. By the way, you don't have to use 192.com. All listed phone numbers are available on line free of charge from www.thephonebook.bt.com. Actually, I've just tried that and it only shows 2 numbers, so it might not be that helpful. 1987 is now 20 years ago, and people could well have died or moved. The death cert seems to me to be your best bet.
