    3. Sorry to disagree but I have just "cut and paste" from one person to another in FTM 2005. I also "C&P" out from FTM to a Word document and into FTM from a Word document. Mike Hi Family Tree Maker 2005 has a very good layout, BUT you can not Copy & Paste into the notes. I have gone back to version 7.5 Stephen

I have FTM 2005 and it doesn't seem to have any difficulty pasting into the notes. The key combination ctrl-v pastes whatever is in the paste buffer. (And ctrl-c will copy any selection into the paste buffer) The only really annoying fault I have found with it was that it was totally incompatible with printing on my parents cheap Epson 860 printer for some strange reason everything was white on white. Other programs printed OK. >> I'm getting a new Laptop & I'm toying with the idea of Vista or sticking >> with XP & I was wondering if any of you on this list could help with the >> following questions? >> >> 1.. 3. Hi Julie We have a Toshiba Satellite laptop at home from PC World running Vista Basic and it's fine - if you run anything better than Basic you need to make sure you have a decent graphics card or switch off the Aero interface which is what slows everything down on lower spec machines. You can also change the interface to 'classic' which basically means it looks like XP. I can send you instructions on how to do either of those if you want. The Toshiba laptops are really good, would definitely recommend them, and ours only cost £350 - think you can get a better spec for not much more than that - although obviously I don't know where in the world you're based! Anyway, as a computer professional I use Vista every day and other than the fact that you'd be well advised to go for as much memory as you can afford (minimum 1Gb, 2Gb will give you good performance) and a reasonable graphics card if you want to use the graphics functionality, I I haven't got anything to say against it. Most software now runs OK on Vista, although for some you might need to download a patch, the main thing will be to check on the websites for your main software and stuff like printer/scanner to make sure you can get Vista drivers. Hope that helps a bit Em On 30/11/2007, Arthur G Broadhurst <agbroadhurst@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hi Julie - > > As to whether Family Tree Maker will work with Vista I do not know. 3. Hi Julie - As to whether Family Tree Maker will work with Vista I do not know. I use Legacy. However, with respect to Vista I have a strong opinion. My wife and I each have laptops with Vista. Even though the computers are new they run very slow on Vista. Both have one gigabyte of RAM, which should be plenty. However Vista was largely developed for a generation of computers that are not in wide usage at the moment and are quite expensive, so I would hold off on getting a laptop with Vista pre-installed, although at some time you could upgrade the operating system to Vista. I prefer my older laptop (2 year old HP) because it is faster and easier to use. I have had a lot of different laptops through the years and I prefer Dell. I have had bad luck with both Gateway and HP laptops (both used by my wife), with no help at all beyond the initial warranty period. Dell laptops are not flawless but at least I have found the service better when there is a problem. Since I assume you are in England you would be well advised to consult local computer shops as to reliability and warranty with respect to makers. When all is said and done, however, I prefer desktop machines - they are less finicky and easily repaired and upgraded. [I can do my own maintenance on a desktop, so that may affect my preference.] Good luck. 3. Thank you to Brain and Suzie, for looking for me, I did come across this person while looking on Freebmd, but what put me of is that his middle name was William, my Gr Grandfather used a middle name of Henry, but this is the only person that is close enough in birth date and place, there is always a possibility that my Gr Grandfather changed his name as he didn't like it. I think the best thing I can now do is send of for his birth certificate and go from there, I will see who his parents were and if they are Arthur & Elizabeth then I think we are safe to say that this is him. Thank you both very much. All the best Rhiannon

    1. [LEI] Elizabeth Ann PALMER
    2. Suzie Woodward
    3. Wonder if there is anyone on this list who could help with a query in Rutland? Elizabeth Ann PALMER was b abt 1836 in Barrowden, Rutland. She married Jeffrey GUTTERIDGE on 25 Dec 1865 in Barrowden. No father or father's occupation was noted on the marriage certificate for Elizabeth Palmer. She also only made her mark. I think I have found her with the family in 1841 in Oakham. Edward Palmer 31 and Alice Palmer 30 with three children Elizabeth 4, Eliza 2 and William 3 months. Edward and Alice Palmer are still in Oakham in 1851 with more children but no Elizabeth of the correct age. There is one aged 5 but she should be about 14. It's quite clear on the census sheet. Does anyone know who Elizabeth's parents were for sure? Would someone be able to check the PRs for me for Barrowden for 1836? Thank you Suzie (from Orkney)

    1. [LEI] HOLLINS, GARDINER, BUTLER, SNAITH, Leicester/Syston
    2. Wondering if anyone out there is connected to Thomas HOLLINS, Cordwainer, in the early 1800's, first in Market Place and later in Northampton Street? Information kindly supplied by Carolyn backed up my theory that his wife was Jane GARDINER. Their son, also Thomas was also a Cordwainer in Leicester, married to a Mary. Grandson of Thomas and Jane, another Thomas, married to an Eliza seems to have been a Solicitors Clerk in Leicester, tho by 1891 he seems to have retired to Syston. Jane HOLLINS, daughter of Thomas and Jane, was married to my John BUTLER (Chemist) who died young. Jane then married Thomas SNAITH - they were last seen in 1861 listed as Photographic Artists living on London Road. Be pleased to hear from anyone connected to this family.
