I just would like to say a big "Thank You" to my late night on-line friends on this list, especially Nivard OVINGTON, Christine DENTON, Mel SMITH and also Olwyn I appreciated your reply regarding this Census information and the answer was, of course, the 1841 Census. Hi Doreen It was just the 1841 (of the available census online) 1851 on should be as given by the head of household Ages over 15 should have been rounded down to the nearest five years so a 29 year old should have been enumerated as 25, a 41 year as 40 etc Mind you many enumerators either ignored it or did not understand the rules as laid down This may help with other abbreviations etc http://www.rootsweb.com/~engcots/Enum.html Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Greetings List, > > If anyone is awake and inputting and feeling helpful > tonite at this time 11.30 pm - do you think you could > please remind me which Census rounded > the ages? > (I have someone asking me and I can't remember.) > > Sorry to be such a silly, but the brain does not seem > to be working tonite. > I definitely have checked google, but don't seem able to > find what I am looking for.. > > Many thanks. > Doreen (in Hinckley)
For the 1841 census the enumerators were supposed to round DOWN to the nearest increment of 5 all ages over 15 years. Not all of them did this however. Hi Carole Entering Launde Abbey into :- http://maps.google.com/ Will take you to a modern map of the area For an older map try :- http://www.old-maps.co.uk Enter the co-ordinates 479600 304200 which should take you there Lesley mentions the fish ponds which we used to fish many years ago, they were certainly well kept then, although shallow there were good Rudd, Roach and some Carp, being shallow the fish were very wary and all the harder to catch I wonder if their ancestors were there in your ancestors day <vbg> Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Regarding your marriage licence I would ask the Leicestershire Records Office if they have anything on it > Dear Leicestershire Members, > I hope someone can help me. Hi Carole, Launde Abbey (note present spelling) most certainly still exists, about a mile north of the village of Loddington, and about 5 miles south west of Oakham. My mother-in-law was born at Loddington and baptised in the Abbey. I think it has had a chequered history, owned at one time (if my memory is correct) by Oliver Cromwell, and is now used as a Church of England retreat. There are extensive grounds around the Abbey which are open to the public (although the Abbey is not) as public roads run through, and the fish ponds still exist, although very neglected. It's a very pleasant spot for a summer picnic, if you are in the area. The Record Office should know if the records you want have been deposited. I've recently found out I've been tracing the wrong SIKES/ SYKES line in Loughborough thanks to a Methodist baptism listing FANNY TAYLOR's Grandparents. I'm now looking for the family of: PETER SIKES and ANN PEGG who married at All Saints, Loughborough in 1790. The All Saints PR's only list daughter MARY baptised 1793 and the burial of son William while my GGG Grandmother is Elizabeth born around 1798 (baptism unfound). I believe Peter was the s/o PETER SIKES and JANE KNIGHT who married at St. Mary's, Leicester in 1760. I'd love to hear from anyone interested in the SIKES families in Loughborough. Yeah, I know the area well myself, so was very confused to see the extra village! I did wonder if it was a mistake, as the text on maps.live.com is exactly where the text on the ordnance survey maps say "groby pool". I used the feedback form on maps.live.com to report the error yesterday, so if I get a reply I'll let the list know what it says! Thanks for the info John - very interesting. Makes me even more inclined to go back to my trusty OS paper maps though - the fictitious "Newtown Limford" is even indexed, and you can get travel directions to it!! How confusing must that be for people who don't know the area? Imagine if you use Google Maps for directions and they send you down a street that doesn't exist? cheers all Em On 03/12/2007, John De-Hayes <johndehayes@blueyonder.co.uk> wrote: > > A lot of online map suppliers deliberately put incorrect or extra > information on their maps so they can check for copyright violations. > Google > Maps add extra streets, or other features that don't in fact exist. Question: does Lawnde Abbey still exist? Is it a town or perhaps a church? Does Book #1 still exist? Where would it be? Are there research facilities in the area where I could find out more about the Brown and Gowsey families? Any help or ideas you can give me are greatly appreciated. Google Maps add extra streets, or other features that don't in fact exist. This was highlighted in a TV programme by Nicholas Crane - the guy who presents MapMan and Coast. I lived and worked in this area and I can confirm that there is no such place as Newtown LIMFORD. The map I generated had the name by a water feature, which is known as Groby (pronounced Grooby) Pool. -----Original Message----- From: leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:leicestershire-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Berry Wraight Sent: 03 December 2007 21:25 To: Emma Faulkner Cc: Leicestershire plus Subject: Re: [LEI] Newtown Linford/Newtown Limford Indeed I did, I had not realised that you were talking about the village being shown in the wrong place.
