    1. [LEI] marriage record question
    2. Sandi Akins
    3. Hi, this question may sound stupid but, can a marriage be registered on one page same volume for the groom and a completely different page for the bride, I am not talking one page difference. I have found Patrick Akins Married vol20 page 137 and Ellen Conway Vol20 pg251, same year and quarter. Would getting credits for the England bmd site and looking at the pages for either have any clues? 1. [LEI] William Bottrill
    2. Adrian Prince
    3. I am new to the mailing list and am trying to solve a mystery in my wife's tree. Her second great grandfather, William Bottrill, was born in about 1817 (possibly in Swinford), married Mary Ann Evans on 3rd January 1846 in Lutterworth and emigrated to Adelaide (South Australia) in about 1853. His father was Thomas Bottrill (b 3/7/1785 in Swinford) and his grandfather was William Bottrill (b in Clifton, Warks). The mystery is that a great uncle (also William Bottrill) of the 1817 William supposedly fled to Adelaide in the late 1830s to escape arrest due to harbouring dissenters against the Corn Laws. He was a stonemason and supposedly left behind a wife and eight children. We had a look for signs of this earlier William in Leicestershire earlier this year and had an intensive look in Adelaide last month but couldn't find any trace. Adelaide was only founded in 1836 so there were very few people there at that time (just four stonemasons) and none of those were William Bottrill. In the circumstances, he may well have changed his name. Can anyone help me from Parish records or MIs? Any additional information on the people mentioned above would also be appreciated. Thanks Adrian Prince (Australia)

    3. Hi Adrian, Have you tried Trade Directories ? You can find some BOTTRILL families here: <http://www.historicaldirectories.org/> I spotted an Elizabeth in Lutterworth at a quick glance, but you may need to search further to see whether William is somewhere in there. 3. Hi Kerry I would agree that its quite possible that the name is FRATER rather than FRAKER I do not see an Edward FRAKER registered around 1889 (in fact there would appear to be just one Edward FRAKER and that a death, on freebmd so far) Did you notice the series of numbers (in the name column) that someone (presumably the person filling in the institutions form) that may be useful if you find any records anywhere The number next to his name looks to be 863 but I wondered if it was a room number as other numbers are repeated You are no doubt aware but although called the Desford Industrial School it was roughly equidistant from Ratby, Desford and Kirby Muxloe, the site is now a retirement village Have you tried the Records Office in Wigston, certainly worth a call Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > I have joined this list for one specific purpose. 2. Kerry Frater
    3. Hello all and Merry Christmas. I have joined this list for one specific purpose. My Grandfather. For a number of years I have been trying to piece together his early life. He was born in Islington in 1889 and married in South Wales (where he then lived and died) in 1914. He is missing from the family in the 1901 census and I have been looking for him for a number of years. Another researcher came across an entry in the 1901 census at Desford Industrial School for a (as transcribed): Edward FRAKER both circa 1890 in London. An inmate committed by a magistrate. I have looked at the image on Ancestry and believe that it is Edward FRATER. I am looking to see if there are any records regarding the taking in and leaving of "inmates" from this institution. This might help me find out if he is or is not my Grandfather. I am also trying to find out which magistrate court committed him. Googling Desford School does show that they took youngsters from all over the country. Many thanks. Best wishes to all researchers. May the new year bring your ancestors closer and your problems further away. Regards Kerry

    3. I visit Dunton Bassett occasionally, and one of the village pubs was closed down a few years ago. It has since been demolished and housing built on the site. I'm fairly certain that this was The Crown and Thistle. Next to this site is the site of the former Methodist Chapel, which has a plaque on a wall indicating that the Chapel once stood there. I don't suppose that the builders will do the same for the pub site. Brian Binns

Can anyone please tell me if this pub still exists and if so which brewery own it? Anyone with ANY information which may help me please get in touch. I am hoping I may find the burial of William BANBURY in the local cemetery so the name & telephone number of the Parish clerk would be of great value. I am not an armchair researcher wanting others to do my research for me but I am very disabled following a stroke Thank you Regards Harold

I recently got the birth certificate of my ancestor John Richard Martin, born in Thurmaston in 1843. His parents on the birth certificate are listed as John Martin and Elisabeth Martin, late Sibson (or poss. Gibson), formerly Smith. I can't find them in the 1841 census, and in the 1851 census John Richard is living with his widowed Aunt, Maria Cook, in Thurmaston. I know from the 1851 census that Maria is listed as coming from Mansfield, but I don't know whether she is John's aunt on his mother's or father's side. I'm not sure where to look next? I don't even know whether John Richard was orphaned or just abandoned... Has anyone got any ideas? I'm seriously considering bringing in a pro..
