    1. [LEI] Joseph Goodson Lyall & Eleanor Jane (nee ?) Melton Mowbray 1901
    2. Jan & Stuart Moon
    3. Hello All This man is my great aunts son (is that right? His mother was my gt grandfather's sister) He was born in 1857 in Normanby, Lincs - but by 1901, he is a Horse Dealer in Melton Mowbray, living with his wife, Eleanor Jane and 10 of their 13 children. Their children were Ethel Gertrude b1880, Eleanor Susanna b 1881, Mabel M b1882, Frank I b1884, Kathleen Marion b 1885, George William b 1886, Elsie Muriel b 1890, Joseph Arthur b 1891, Hilda Florence b 1892, Charles Goodson b 1893, Thomas Reginald b1895, Gladys Irene b 1898, Robert Vincent b 1900. Kathleen, Frank and Mabel have left home but all the rest are with their parents. I can trace some of these people, but mostly, after this census they seemed to disappear - haven't found deaths for parents, either. Can anyone suggest where I could try looking to see if they emigrated? Thanks for any/all suggestions. Regards jan Moon Daintree, Australia

    1. [LEI] Family of BAILEY or MARSDEN
    2. Christine Denton
    3. I have a John BAILEY, born 1828 in Coleorton, Leics., son of John MARSDEN and Susanna BAILEY, who were married in 1834. John BAILEY was married to C[K]atherine BRADBURY nee LEIGH on 12 April 1869 Would anyone be able to check the 1871 Census for this couple, along with the daughter of Catherine - Mary Ann BRADURY, born c1862 and also a daughter that was registered as Susan BAILEY and born 30 November 1866, but states that John BAILEY was her father and Catherine 'BAILEY' formerly BRADBURY was the mother. By the 1881 Census John BAILEY was known by his father's surname of MARSDEN. This family has been a real headache to me - my Grandmother, a daughter of the BAILEY[MARSDEN] / BRADBURY nee LEIGH marriage and always known to me, and my father, as having the surname MARSDEN, but, I've now found her registered as BAILEY, married a fellow named CURTIS whose father had changed his name from CUTLER to CURTIS around 1870, before the 1871 Census. Why. Oh why didn't they leave a paper trial?? I hope you can work your way through this without getting the grey hairs that I have!! Best wishes to all for 2008, Christine Denton nee Curtis

    1. [LEI] Spires/Spiers/Sykes
    2. Adrian Prince
    3. My great grandfather, Albert Campbell, married Elizabeth Spires of Leicestershire in Birmingham in 1887. They show up nicely in the 1891 and 1901 censuses, with the right named children and a date of birth for Elizabeth of c 1862. Elizabeth (right occupation and year of birth) appears in the 1881 census, visiting the Barsby family in All Saints, Leicester, where she is shown as born in Leicester. An Elizabeth Spiers is shown as being born in Leicester in the second quarter of 1862 and I can't see anyone with that spelling after that, so she was probably my great grandmother. My problem is that I can't find any trace of her in the 1871 census, despite allowing non-exact matches for first name, surname and date of birth. Before I lash out on the birth and/or marriage certificates for Elizabeth, can anyone help me confirm that I'm on the right path? As an extra twist, my mother thought that her grandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth Sykes, not Spires/Spiers. Thanks Adrian Prince

    2. KATHLEEN OFARRELL
    3. Forgot to mention in my query about John W Llewelyn that the 2 Ernests had different DOB -1881 and 1897. Was wondering if John had had more children by a different woman ( not necesarily marrying her) and had for some reason decided to give his 2 sons the same name. Kathy

    3. My grandmother's 2nd husband was Albert Ernest Llewelyn born in born c1881 in Flintshire to John William and Maria Llewelyn .By 1891 Albert was living in Chester however there is no sign of his father. His mother is still described as being married on the 1891 and 1901 census. John was born in Crickhowell , Breconshire and the 1881 census gives his age as 32 making his birth date c1849.He was a railway signalman.I have found another John W Llewellyn on the 1891 and 1901 census with birthdate c1852 and was also a railway signalman born in Crickhowell. He is described as being married but no sign of a wife . In 1901 he had 3 children , the eldest by strange coincidence also being Albert E.Could these two Johns possibley be the same person ? I have searched the records between 1848 and 1853 and have found two Johns (no John W ) born in Crickhowell in 1851 and 1853 both of which could fit the second John W. As yet I haven't found his death or any other marriage records so why was Maria recorded as being married on the census? Can anyone help? Many thanks Kathy

    2. Hi Kathy, I have an ancestor who in 1901 is listed twice - both with his mother in Blackburn, and with his father in New Brighton! There is no doubt that he is the same person. I just assume that perhaps he was visiting one parent, but normally lived with the other - and one of them was confused when filling in the census form. Regards Mark
