Hello! Sorry if I sound a bit stupid, but it's been months since I've done any research into my Family Tree and I'm trying to find where the 1901 Census has gone! I thought it was on Find My Past, which I have credits for - but it only goes up to 1891. Did they move it while I was sleeping??? Best wishes, tRaCeY :)
Could SKS help me break down my re-enforced brick wall? I have been searching for this elusive relative for what seems eternity I am looking for the proof of birth/baptism of Elizabeth BURTON, born in Rutland in 1858. All my info points to being born in Oakham, i.e.censi's. TIA Regards David Robinson Transcribing for FreeCEN in Leicestershire & FreeBMD Member of the LRFHS No R0173

Hello, Many thanks to all who responded with their thoughts, ideas and book suggestions it is appreciated very much regards, jim
I have looked on Ancestry for you, (this is a subscription site) and found a possible marriage between Reuben Charles and Mary Asher in the December quarter 1847, in Melton Mowbray registration district. The register only shows the individual names of those married that day, it doesn't pair them up, so it is not 100%. Old Dalby would I guess be in the Melton Reg. district. You will either have to send for the certificate from Melton register office, or look up the parish records in Leicestershire Record Office. Hi so Angelique did meet the sultan!! but the author did base his stories on historical fact. perhaps we should read the Angelique series first Terry Norway > Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 11:22:51 -0800 > From: james_l_stokes@yahoo.com > To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [LEI] Turkish captives, 1684 > > Hi Folks, > There were Algerian pirates operating out of North Africa who would capture British and European shipping and sell the Christians into slavery. These slaves could be redeemed by their families. I know William Harris, one of the founders of Rhode Island was captured in 1680, he was later redeemed but died at the home of John Stokes in London. Harris was captured while going to London to reaffirm his claim to his land in Rhode Island. This was a question of Muslims capturing Christians which may have motivated Valentine Goodman to leave money for their redemption. While the well-to-do could finance their own redemption, for the poor sailors on those ships they were destined to be slaves the rest of their lives. > Jim > > > > > > ----- Original Message ---- > From: JOHN RILEY > To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com > Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 4:45:06 PM > Subject: Re: [LEI] Turkish captives, 1684 > > Hi Jim > > The way I read it is that the funds would go towards paying ransoms on people taken prisoner by the Turks (perhaps a generic term for non-Christians), not Turkish people taken prisoner. If I remember correctly, Linda Colley's book 'Captives: Britain, Empire and the World 1600-1850' (London: Jonathan Cape, 2002) goes into the plight of those captured by Barbary pirates in detail, and might be worth checking out. Hope this helps. Hi from before the Roman Empire there has been trade to areas outside of Europe. But about 1648 there was problems with the trade to the Orient through Turkey. Barbary pirates raided as far North as the southern coasts of the British isles. There were also more than enough non European traders in England. but guess our Turkish captives were captives of Barbary pirates, regards Terry Norway (Traders from Scandinavia were down in Turkey in 1200) > From: flavell@comcast.net > Date: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 12:16:15 -0500 > To: chaneys@clara.net > CC: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [LEI] Turkish captives, 1684 > > The Barbary Pirates (a/k/a Ottoman Corsairs, and hence maybe "turks") > were active seizing hostages from vessels from the 16th Century. > Wikipedia has a nice articl > > > > BEQUEST TO MOST INDIGENT, POOREST, AGED, > DECREPIT, MISERABLEST PAUPERS. > Hallaton, Leicestershire. > Valentine Goodman, by will, dated in 1684, > bequeathed £800 to be laid out in land, and the > profits thereof given to the "most indigent, > poorest, aged, decrepit, miserablest paupers," viz. > six from Easton, four from Medbourn, four from > Hallaton, and two from Blaston ; and if any part > of the money (was) employed for easing town > levies, or not according to the intent of the > testator, then he declared that the gift should > cease, and the money be employed for the redemption > of Turkish captives. > The produce of the land in 1822, 1823, and > 1824, is reported at £100 each year. > The names of the recipients are regularly entered > Jn a book, with the amount paid to each.— > XXXII. pt. v. p. 235. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to LEICESTERSHIRE- > PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Hi Jon, My great-grandfather, John Olive, married an Ann Pratt (b.20/1/1843 Cosby) in Paisley on 31 Dec 1866 (maybe they hadn't heard of Gretna!). They returned to live in Cosby. Ann's parents were William Pratt b.1811 Barwell or Elmsthorpe and Hephzibah Gee b. 1815 in Cosby. Haven't found a marriage for them, but haven't tried recently. They had at least 6 offspring all listed in John Savage's excellent database of Cosby BMD's attached to Cosby site in Leicestershire Villages web-site. Hope this might be of interest..
