    3. On Sun, 10 Feb 2008 Monica, posting as "Nicki Stevens" <mstevens004@socal.rr.com>, asked >Subject: [LEI] Research WRIGHT / DOUGHGERTY > >I am new to this List, and am seeking help in the research of my >maternal grandparents. > >Edward Osborne WRIGHT, born in Dunton Bassett ~ May, 1885 >Married Ellen DOUGHERTY in Leicester ~ Abt 1904 >They became the parents of seven children > >Ellen died in Leicester ~ 1926 > >Edward then married Susan (Susannah) GREGORY in Leicester ~ in 1926 >They became the parents of eight children > >Edward died in Leicester ~ May 1939 >Susan died in Leicester ~ 29 Jan 1975 > >This information is all "hearsay" from family members. >I have no documentation, and have not been able to find any. > >Any assistance anyone could give would be gratefully received. > >Regards, >Monica JONES STEVENS >Los Angeles, California Hi Monica It looks like I am the first to reply to the list - and to you? You really should start with something that you definitely know and get the documentation to work your way back ie work from the known to the unknown It has been a bit of a mission to find records matching your post. >Edward Osborne WRIGHT, born in Dunton Bassett ~ May, 1885 >Married Ellen DOUGHERTY in Leicester ~ Abt 1904 These index entries from FreeBMD are probably those for Ellen's first marriage: Marriages Jun 1905 DOHERTY Ellen Leicester 7a 548 WRIGHT Osborne Leicester 7a 548 The marriage certificate should give you Ellen's and Osborne's ages, the names and occupations of their fathers, and the names (and possibly occupations) of the witnesses at their marriage. >They became the parents of seven children The mother's maiden surname was included in the birth index entry for births registered in England and Wales from the September quarter of 1912, so some or all of these birth index entries from FreeBMD may be their younger children. (I searched on mother's maiden surname DO*HERTY to pick up variant spellings) Births Jun 1913 WRIGHT Florence M /DOHERTY Chorlton 8c 1513 Births Mar 1914 WRIGHT Edith /DOHERTY Leicester 7a 311 Births Sep 1920 WRIGHT William C /DOHERTY Barton I. 8c 1130 Births Dec 1920 WRIGHT Vera /DOHERTY Leicester 7a 308 You may need to get the birth certificates to confirm that these are their children >Ellen died in Leicester ~ 1926 The death index entry doesn't seem to appear on FreeBMD. FreeBMD is a 'work in progress', so you may need to search the actual indexes - probably available (on fiche or film) at a genealogical library or your local Mormon Family history Centre >Edward then married Susan (Susannah) GREGORY in Leicester ~ in 1926 FreeBMD don't have any likely index entries for a Edward or Osborne WRIGHT marrying a GREGORY. Again you may need to search the marriage indexes on film or fiche >They became the parents of eight children I did not find birth index entries on FreeBMD from 1924 for any WRIGHT children whose mother's maiden name was given as GREGORY >This information is all "hearsay" from family members. >I have no documentation, and have not been able to find any. Perhaps you should to start with yourself and work back, confirming each step as you go. Hope this helps Graham Hoult Kirwee, Cantrbury, NZ

    3. Hi Steven, I agree with Nivard. I was going to suggest John Henry DEACON b.abt.1876 in Fleckney, son of Ezra also. but then I checked my database & found John & Selina. I cannot help with the service details for John William but I think you will be interested in the details I am sending you off list. 3. Hi Carmel The site you mention is a pay per view site which withholds details that may prove or help to prove its the man in question (I do understand why they do this) There are two John William DEACONs on the soldiers that died database (although three on the CWGC) Name: DEACON, JOHN WILLIAM Initials: J W Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Leicestershire Regiment Unit Text: 3rd/4h Bn. Age: 25 Date of Death: 05/10/1915 Service No: 4204 Additional information: Son of Mrs. J. W. Deacon, of 27, Marston St., Leicester, and the late J. W. Deacon; husband of E. Deacon. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: O. "U." 1066. Cemetery: LEICESTER (WELFORD ROAD) CEMETERY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Name: DEACON, JOHN WILLIAM Initials: J W Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) Unit Text: 10th Bn. Age: 21 Date of Death: 17/01/1918 Service No: 32050 Additional information: Son of John and the late Annie Elizabeth Deacon, of 52, New Cross Rd., Stamford, Lincs. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: IV. C. 31. Cemetery: HERMIES HILL BRITISH CEMETERY Which may spare the expense if neither are the man in question, although STeven has not stated if JW DEACON he seeks survived the War? 3. Hi Steven Who was your John W DEACON's parents? I only see a John Henry DEACON born in Fleckney in the 1881 census, son of Ezra Or do you mean he was from Fleckney but not born there? There is a John William DEACON son of John and Selina (both born Fleckney) they are in Kilby Bridge in 1881 JW is enumerated born in Wigston The John Henry born Fleckney looks to have been killed in action in 1914 When you say "the" one on the National Archives which one do you mean is the wrong one? Her name was Caroline Ann HALE and all her life she was known as Carrie. (She married John CHARLES in 1893 in Glamorgan, in case anybody finds a connection). She did have a tenuous Leicester connection as it was her son (my late father-in-law) who "emigrated" from the Valleys to Leicester to teach at Gateway Boys' School. He was also organist & choirmaster at Clarendon Park Methodist church. Regards, Blanche Charles Wellington New Zealand

    3. Hi but popular about that time was Karen (Caren) and Karina (Carina) Chara, and Cara which all shorten to Carrie as well as the existance of of the name Karrie make it most possible that she did shorten her name. May be she liked the name Carrie, You dont say if she was Welsh speaking, names sound different in Welsh and she may well of shortened it to escape hearing the English "murdering" her first name. I know a good few Polish Michal who just became Mike, etc (Michal in Polish sounds a lot like Meehoow) How Terry or Terences become Tel or Tez ? regards Tery Norway > Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2008 17:26:57 +1300 > From: blanchec@paradise.net.nz > To: leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com > Subject: [LEI] Caroline / Carrie > > "TERRY / IRENE." wrote: > > can someone tell me if he name caroline would be shortened to carrie around 1895 ish. > > --------------------------------- > Hi Terry, > > It certainly was the case with my husband's grandmother, who was born in 1873. Hi Terry I suspect it refers to the marriage taking place at the Register Office in Leicester, not sure if it had the same location in 1896 but was / is at Pocklingtons Walk which would be in the Parish of St Martins It was known colloquially as St Pocklingtons Cathedral <vbg> Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > i have a marriage cert dated 22/08/1896,at the top of cert it says > MARRIAGE SOLEMNIZED at the blaby district the register office in the > parish of st martin leicester in the county of leicester, where was st > martin leicester ?i thort blaby district was wigston area > > many thanks, > > terry.
