    1. [LEI] Loughborough Petty Sessions - James Hall/Mary Ann Williams
    2. Carol Reid-Matte
    3. First posting ... I'm facing what feels like an enormous brick wall and hoping that someone on the list might be able to offer some help. I recently learned that proceedings of the Loughborough Petty Sessions were not recorded until the 20th century but local newspapers might have information that I am looking for. I have been searching for information on Loughboro' Petty Sessions proceedings of January 12, 1898 concerning a Mr. James Hall. Mr. Hall was a professional tramp and beggar who 'picked up' my Grandmother, Mary Ann Williams, and was using her for begging purposes. She was approximately 2 years old when Mr. Hall took her - likely in early to mid-1897. Hall tramped the country between Derby, Leicester and Northampton. Hall often stopped by a model Lodging at Loughboro' belonging to William Gresley and Martha Hayward. Mr. Hall was tried and convicted to ten week's hard labour. When taken from Mr Hall, my Grandmother was put in the care of the NSPCC who then sent her to Barnardo's, in Stepney Causeway. She was considered a very small child, very thin when she entered their care and they also noted that she had 2 vaccination marks on her left arm. I am praying that news of this story might have appeared in some of the local newspapers at that time. I wondered if in the proceedings of the petty sessions that Mr. Hall might have indicated where he picked-up my Grandmother. Barnardo's eventually sent her to Canada but there is no information at all from her early years. With the knowledge that she had received 2 vaccinations, in that era, she had obviously been well cared-for prior to being 'stolen' and I am sure that there must be family out there somewhere. If anyone can provide any assistance/guidance, I would be most appreciative. I apologize for the length of this posting, but felt it was important to provide as much history as possible. Again, thanks for any help. Carol

    3. Hi John, Dating the restriction on hours is more difficult. I have a licence from 1826 that says : "... nor permit or suffer any drinking or tippling in any part of his, her or their premises during the usual hours of Divine Service on Sundays; nor shall keep open his, her, or their House or other Premises during late Hour of the Night, or early in the Morning, for any other purpose than the reception of Travellers, but to keep good Rule and Order therein, according to the Purport of a Licence granted for selling Ale, Beer, or other Liquors by Retail ...." Debatable whether that constitutes licencing hours as such, I guess. Pity the poor law enforcer who has to decide what "late Hour of the night" or "early in the Morning" mean ! Of course, very few of these early licences have survived, although often the Quarter Session records have. Best wishes, Mike

It certainly was not in the 18th centuary. It is very late 19 century or early 20th century. I think restricted hours brought in in 1916 as Munition workers were missing work through late drinking If you go to http://www.cambridge-camra.org.uk/ale/309/licensing-history.html you can read the history of pub licences.

    1. [LEI] Bushloe House and Biddulph Street, Leicester
    2. JOHN RILEY
    3. Hello Listers Please can I ask for any information regarding two locations in Leicester in the early 20th century? My great-grandfather's two unmarried sisters Rebecca and Elizabeth (Lizzie) PIGGOTT lived at 66 Biddulph Street, Highfields, Leicester for some time during the period 1901-1930 (certainly during the 1920s). I have found them on the 1901 census in Onslow street, and I know that Lizzie died in February 1929 at Biddulph street. Looking at a modern map of Leicester, I find it hard to imagine there were as many as 66 houses in this street. Was some part of the street damaged during the war, or was there some drastic demolition programme? I possess a postcard from 1916 addressed to my grandmother Cathie PIGGOTT (aged about 20) "c/o Bushloe House, Wigston Magna, Leicester"; I have another postcard (same year) addressed to Miss Piggott (possibly my grandmother, or possibly her aunt Rebecca, as it appears to be signed "Lizzie") at Bushloe House, and another postcard (unstamped) showing a view of the front of Bushloe House with the following written on the back (punctuation uncorrected): " I will try to get a better one of this house before I come home but Mrs G. wont have any one in the garden taking photos". I find (from searching on the internet) that this building is on Station Road, and now used as Council offices, and that it was extensively decorated in the 1880s. Can anybody tell me what it was used for, or who owned the property, during the First World War? It looks too grand to have been a boarding house. One theory I have is that my grandmother was being trained as a nurse, as by early 1918 she was caring for wounded soldiers who had been sent to her local hospital (Stamford, Lincolnshire) for convalescence. My grandmother lived in Stamford with her father, stepmother and younger sister. John Riley Bourne, Lincs

    3. Hello All Websites for old occupations say that a shoebinder stitched the uppers of shoes. Can anyone point me in the direction of a site that would explain more - particularly relating to 1790s onwards? I'm interested in a female shoebinder born 1771. My query isn't Leicester based but I know there are/were people on this list who are knowledgeable about shoes. Regards Jackie (South Wales)

    3. Hi Listers, Which is better MyHeritage, My Family.com or GenesReunited. They say that they are free, well except for Genes which costs me $20 Australian Dollars a year. They list databases that they find info in but do they all then cost to veiw the info or do they have some free sites too. Unable to afford to join lots of these sites don't have a credit card and because I live in Australia the exchange rate is about 3 times the English pound. Will any sites except Australia personal Cheque. Ancestry do have an Australia site but not sure if they would take a cheque. regards Cheryl Parafield Gardens South Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: <leicestershire-plus-request@rootsweb.com> To: <leicestershire-plus@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 01, 2008 7:20 PM Subject: LEICESTERSHIRE-PLUS Digest, Vol 3, Issue 1 > > > IMPORTANT! 3. Hello I am wondering if there are any parish CD's available like there are in some counties. I am looking for a baptism of Elsie Elizabeth WELDON who was born on 16th July 1891 (according to the family bible) to Mary Ann WELDON. I was wondering if there was any more detail on the baptism register, sometimes the baby's father is named if you're lucky!! Elsie Elizabeth died the following year before her 1st birthday. Mary Ann was living with her parents at this time in St Margaret's Leicester. Any help greatly appreciated. Regards Ally

    3. Ally, Have you obtained a copy of Elsie Elizabeth's birth certificate? In case you have not, the reference (on FreeBMD) is September Quarter 1891, Leicester 7a 229. The father might be named on the certificate.
