Hello Gail I had a similar problem, I thought my grandparents were buried in Welford Rd in the early 50's. I live in Australia but while on holiday in Leicester I visited the Council records office and the lady there was very helpful, firstly checking Welford Rd and not finding them, she checked Saffron Hill cemetery and located them there. I was then able to go to the cemetery and locate the graves. Lansdowne Road is not to far away from Saffron Hill. There is a contributor to this list (who's name escapes me at the moment but I'm sure other people will know) who voluntee's work in the council cemetery records office and might be able to help you. Bye for now Graham Grant Sydney Australia

Where the funeral service took place can often give the clue. Hope this helps Graham Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury, NZ

Is this the Phoebe who was married in Loughborough? Leicestershire is a very big county so it helps to narrow the location down somewhat? There is a likely looking entry for the baptism at Thorpe Acre and Dishley of a Phoebe TOMLINSON to a Francis TOMLINSON in 1780 on the I.G.I. T A & D is only a couple of miles to the NW of Loughborough town centre. I don't have T A & D records on CD or other form but someone on this list may?? I have played a few hunches and have done some hard graft since being told this morning by a PORTSOUTH family member in Leicestershire that Gail and Frank emigrated. I can now report that I have made contact with Gail's son who gave me contact details for his mother. He phoned me tonight less than 15 minutes after I emailed him a copy of Judy's message. The funny thing is that Gail's son saw the above message from Judy on a Loughborough pay site a couple of months ago but wasn't prepared to use his credit card on-line. Judy, Gail isn't on email so could you please email me privately with your contact details (snail AND phone number) and I will phone Gail and pass them on to her. I look forward to hearing from you ASAP. It's been an exciting day! Graham (Sherlock) Hoult Kirwee, Canterbury, NZ

Hi Jo Can't advise on archives etc and don't really have an opportunity to get to them, but I do know that there is a Whitwick Historical group which might have more info for you: http://infolinx.leics.gov.uk/infolinx/infolinx.infolinx_xml.getorgs?ref=1420&template=detail Also, I live in Whitwick, so if you want building photos or gravestone photos let me know and I'll drag the dog and a camera around the village one weekend :-) happy hunting. Dear Folks, Many, many apologies for posting in HTML (didn't know I was!!). Hope this gets through, as it should be plain text. I am trying to find out if I can discover who the father was of my great x 3 grandfather Henry Edgar TUGBY (and his sister Florence Mary TUGBY). Unfortunately, both were illegitimate, but both baptised in Whitwick. Henry was born 15th July 1866 (birth place Main Street, Whitwick) and Florence born 11th Oct 1871 (birth place North Street, Whitwick). Their mother was Eliza TUGBY (born 1844), daughter of William TUGBY (born around 1801) watchmaker and post office master in Whitwick. Eliza did get married on 15th Oct 1877 to a William Taylor, a collier and then later a publican in Nottingham (Give Us Your Hand or The Hand pub in Wollaton Street, Nottingham) but I don't get the feeling that he was their father. Both Henry & Florence put a George TUGBY (deceased) as their father on their marriage certificates, but as many of you know, that may not mean a thing!!! Are there any petty sessions or such like that might have details for Whitwick? Unfortunately, I live in Cyprus, so I can't get to the archives at the moment, but I'd be very grateful for any help or advise. Many thanks, Jo in sunny Paphos. ___________________________________________________________ Yahoo! For Good helps you make a difference http://uk.promotions.yahoo.com/forgood/

Well done Graham. It's good to know there are so many helpful people out there. I was the one who replied initially saying that there were no Portsmouths left in Loughborough, but now I look again there are some in Shepshed, which is only a few miles away, and one of these is probably the one you contacted. This time last year we were in your neck of the woods at the end of a wonderful 3½ weeks in NZ before flying out from Christchurch. I love the country, the people, and the wine! South Island Pinot Noir is one of my favourites. The lady who answered said that her husband was a cousin of Frank. They lost contact with Frank and Gail "years and years ago" when they emigrated. They know that they had children. I'll have a go at finding Gail or her family wherever they may be and pass your message on. Give me a couple of weeks and get back if you haven't heard from Gail or her family or me. Thank you Graham for your time and help I am sure Judy will thank you herself, and I hope that she finds her penpal Ann-Marie

Terry, Your search for photos of Baker Street continues I see. I've a couple of suggestions for you. 1) Try to persuade the "Mercury" to ask Leicester locals to submit photos of the streets around the area that their offices now occupy. They may also be able to create quiet a series of resident's photos of now redeveloped areas. I have some I think, of the old Halford Street fruit & veg wholesale market. 2nd) Have you asked your family (including cousins/uncles/aunts) or known former neighbours to search if they have interesting photos? You never know what will turn up. Peter Holmes Western Australia. Skype ; p.g.holmes [HOLMES (Witham on the Hill, Manthorpe, Spalding, Pinchbeck, Donington then Leicestershire)].
