I do not think it may neccesarily be a case of "for a better life" but more a case of out of my hands and perhaps a few quid earned on the way Just a thought Of course I may be doing the poor mother an injustice, she may have passed away in childbirth and the child was taken in by the Parish Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > His full name was Charles Askew. Hi Carol Neither organisation was in existence at the time of this boy so it must be another organisation if indeed it was one at all and not a private affair Barnardo was only born in 1845 and the British Home Children seems to have started in 1870 It does sound odd that at that time they would go to such trouble as to send a one to three year across the Atlantic, it does make you wonder if money was the motive especially given the status of the adopting parent Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Hi - > > A quick search of the Government of Canada's Library and Archive > Records shows approximately 10 different Askew children arriving in > Canada. Sorry Nivard I did mislead with that reference to Leicestershire, obviously having a 'senior' moment at the time. To All: this little one had a Mother whowas in a workhouse, no money here, no private organizations. He was born about 1851, was in Al, USA, by the age of 3. Family says that he was adopted in Troy AL by a Dr. Miller. Sure wish I could find more on his family, I do thank the 3 or 4 of you who have responded this day and so quickly at that. It is much appreciated....I need some guidance. I thank you for any bits of help. frandbak@bellsouth, net
We really need a bit more information to be able to help you! What was his first name? And was his surname Askew? When did he get to USA - is that what the 3yr old bit refers to? If he was still in UK in 1861 we have more chance of tracking him down and possibly his mother in the census. Hi Frank? I think some first names would be useful Do you have your great grandfathers first name and his mothers, plus her age if you know it Without first names as a minimum I cannot see how you could proceed, even with its a very long shot There are 11 male ASKEWs registered in Leicestershire between 1850 and 1854 but no MCNUTTs There is of course the possibility that he was given a completely new name both forename and surname if he were adopted by someone who did not care for his birth name Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > My great grandfather was born inleichestershire probably in year of 1851 > or even 1854. Hi - A quick search of the Government of Canada's Library and Archive Records shows approximately 10 different Askew children arriving in Canada. The majority appear to be sent by Barnardo's. There were 1,000's of children sent to Canada by "Dr. Barnardo" and other organizations as well. These children are referred to as "British Home Children". My Grandmother was one of these children, sent to Canada in 1905, at the age of 10 years. Hope this helps in your search. His full name was Charles Askew. He was sent to USA and was adopted at age of 3 by a Dr. Miller of Columbus, GA. don't know what organization may have helped the Mother so that he could come here for a better life. May have been born in 1851 because the date 1854 was the year he was 3. I have just started this search and am in need of guidance. frandbak@bellsouth.net
Full name was Charles Askew. He was sent to USA in 1854, age 3, perhaps by Mother or some organization be cause it has been said that the Mother was in a work house. A Dr. Miller, so it is said by family went to Troy, AL to adopt this little one from a home . Not sure where he was in Troy, nor when he arrived there. Anyway he was brought to Columbus, Ga Thank you for any guidance. frandbak@bellsouth.net

Not a problem Jan I was somewhat lead astray by your original subject line which read ;-) "Re: [LEI] ST MATTHEWS, BERNERS ST, LEICS" So I naturally looked in Leicestershire :-) St Matthews is an estate in Leicester so you may understand why it was plausible The school you were enquiring about was in Ipswich so the place to post the enquiry would be Suffolk list At that time there were thousands of small private schools often ran by a spinster or widow with help from a sister or two the records for which rarely seem to have survived as they were private property Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > PS Nivard - that was the people, what I was trying to find out was whether > anyone had any knowledge of the school.
