    3. Hi Joan TOWN HALL, YESTERDAY . Leicester Chronicle and the Leicestershire Mercury (Leicester, England), Saturday, April 01, 1871; pg. 8. 19th Century British Library Newspapers: Part II. Ezra DUVAL charged with assaulting his wife on the 26th ult, was fined 21s, or 14 days The 1871 being taken the 2nd of April 1881 it seems he did not pay the fine but took the 14 days instead As an Australian resident you can gain access to the 19th Century Newspapers which includes a good run of the Leicester Courier & Leicester Mercury by joining your National Library of Australia (you can do it online), armed with the member number you can use their facilities from home 24/7 Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can any kind person help on information about Ezra Duval born 1848 at Leicester? > > He married Elizabeth Vann b. 1852 in 1869 in Leicester, they had a daughter Clara in 1871 and at > this time he is found on the 1871 Census in Borough Gaol, High Cross St., St. Martin, Leicester. 3. They are at: Piece: 594 Book: 28 Folio: 39 Page Number: 16 in Borough Well (now called Borrowell) Kegworth, Leics with 7 children all with non-rounded ages (it was quite common for some not to follow the rounding rules) BUT Joseph has age 75 which is almost certainly an error - perhaps 57 mistranscribed. People made transcription errors at the time and weren't always good at arithmetic. Joseph was a framework knitter in 1841 and 1851 censuses. 1851 census has people compatible with the 1841 census. There were several chapels in Kegworth - quite a centre for non conformism. The children were baptised at St. Andrew's, the parish church (Church of England). Being buried or married at the parish church doesn't prove they did not go to chapels. But it looks likely that the family was most of the time C of E. 3. Hi Annette Ages in 1841 were rounded down (not up) as per the enumerators instructions Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age is. Thus - for Persons aged 15 years and under 20 write 15 20 years and under 25 write 20 25 years and under 30 write 25 30 years and under 35 write 30 35 years and under 40 write 35 40 years and under 45 write 40 45 years and under 50 write 45 50 years and under 55 write 50 55 years and under 60 write 55 60 years and under 65 write 60 65 years and under 70 write 65 70 years and under 75 write 70 and so on up to the greatest ages. Some enumerators either forgot or chose to ignore the instructions but its normally obvious from the varied ages Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > Hi Mary Beth, could this be your family? - only Joseph with a wife of Ann, > on the 1841 Census ages were rounded up and down, hope this helps, > > In an hour I am going away for 12 days so cannot help any further, > > happy hunting > Annette WATSON > Lismore > Australia > > > Person: MOORE, Joseph > Address: Moores, Aston Flamville, Burbage

The information is off the IGI but I cannot as yet get to see the parish register which might say where Mary came from (does anyone have access to the PR and can tell me what the entry says?). Have you come across a Mary Cheatle presumably born early 1750s? 3. Oh yes, Cheatle is also one of mine. Sarah Cheatle was born at Ashby de la Zouch in 1795 according to the census and indeed there is a Sarah Cheatle baptized there 27 Jan 1795 at Ashby de la Zouch daughter of William and Sarah Cheatle. She died 26 Jul 1872 at Aston, Warwickshire having married William Welch 24 Aug 1818 at Longdon by Lichfield, Staffordshire. Never more than one piece of data in one country :) The marriage reigstration has witness William Cheatle but this is too early for the parents to be named although some priests did but not this one. I suspect that my line is William Cheatle and Sarah Woodcock who married 23 Feb 1773 at Castle Donington. They baptized five older children at Castle Donington and may have buried one of them as a teenager at Ashby de la Zouch as there is a burial there preceding the birth of Sarah but the priest did not record parent's names for the most part. This was the only child that they baptized at Ashby de la Zouch as I have gone through the registers quite thoroughly. There is a large Cheatle family at Ashby de la Zouch. 3. Hallo Nivard, Many thanks for your reply - at least it proves my message got through and the list is just quiet. I'll keep an eye out in case anyone is going to the RO and check the original for me. Thanks for all the other info. I;'ll make a note of it all and have a look.
