Hi List, Can anybody tell me how I can find births in Gibraltar in the 1900 – 1915 time frame ? looking for the children by the surname Crook. Many thanks for any help. Daphne New Zealand.
The Civil BDM records for Gibraltar have been microfilmed by the LDS. The microfilms can be ordered into your local LDS library for a small sum (recovery of the p&p costs). < http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=titledetails&titleno=440722&disp=Civil+registration &columns=*,0,0 > David Armstrong Maylands, Western Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: Nivard Ovington Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2011 6:16 AM Hi again As a civilian any event should be under the Consulate records but I did not see any Many events on foreign shores went unrecorded or the record has been lost, less likely with a Consulate record than an Army event Some people simply didn't bother as they were to busy or to far from the place of registration , many baptised children on their return to the UK and believed that was enough You would think given his title he would have recorded any events of his own wouldn't you Did he have his family with him there or return to the UK for visits I take it you have tried the newspapers of the period Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Nivard, > > Many thanks for the reply, and the site but as you say only the one army > which is not one I was after. > The father John Rowland Crook is listed on shipping as Director of Public > Records / Works in Gibraltar. > > Regards and thanks > Daphne.

Hi Daphne These births (if recorded) would be in the Overseas indexes (similar to the GRO indexes as found on freebmd but for Army & Consular registrations etc) Most of the Overseas indexes can be searched for free on www.familyrelatives.com You need to register to use them but not give CC details I can only see one birth for a CROOK 1900 - 1915 A Robert Herbert CROOK birth registration can be found in 1900 under Gibraltar in the Army Births, page 11 That would be sufficient detail to order a birth cert from the GRO in the normal way Curiously he also appears to be listed twice more in the Regimental Births As CROOK Robert H - Regiment Royal Artillery - Gibraltar - 1900 - volume 1614 page 69 And CROOK Robert H - Regiment Royal Artillery - Gibraltar - 1900 - volume 1487 page 260 They all three appear to be the same birth or a very strange coincidence It may be worth asking the GRO before ordering if this is a birth of intrest to you NB although I found no more CROOKs after 1900, there appeared to be some before 1900 in the same location and Regiment Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi List, > > Can anybody tell me how I can find births in Gibraltar in the 1900 – 1915 time frame ? looking for > the children by the surname Crook. > > Many thanks for any help. > Daphne > New Zealand.
Thank you for this. However I don't think this can be my Phoebe Hatfield. This death registration looks like it would match the Phoebe Hatfield found in the 1851 census at HO107 / 2320 / folio 215 / page 29. Living in the North Street Workhouse, Leeds, a widow aged 62, a shop keeper, born Leeds, Yorkshire. It looks like this Phoebe Hatfield can also be found in the 1841 census at HO107 / 1343 / book 8 / folio 8 / page 8 in York Road, Leeds with husband Marmaduk Hatfield. And then death Q4 1846 Marmaduke Hatfield Leeds 23/372. on 26/10/11 2:09 PM, [email protected] wrote: > Hi Dennis there is the following in Free BMD > > Death m1858 Phoebe Hatfield Leeds 9b/314 > > Rgds > Mike

Hi Marilyn I was at the LRO yesterday and had a look at the Ansty PRs I did not find your Benjamin Smith bapt in 1765 Marriage to Mary Cooke was 19th July 1789 witness William Morris and Thomas Throsley (this Thomas was on a lot of records so I assume he was a something to do with the church) Curate was Edward Vaughn. No parents or other family Burial of Benjamin Smith 12th May 1829 age 63 I also found the following which are interesting if not relevant. Baptism 1770 14th of the month but the page was vary bad and I could not determine the month. Mary daug of Benjamin and Mary Cooke. Could it be that the year was 1790? It was in the correct place to 1770 but a bit spooky don't you think? I found a Benjamin Simpson Bapt 1764 Elizabeth Smith Bapt 1766 Benjamin White Bapt 1767 Regards Mike
Hi Mike: Thank you so very much for taking the time to check the Anstey PRs for me. Will have to start looking for Benjamin Smith in nearby parishes. The burial of Benjamin confirms my finding so that is good to know. I have the baptism of Mary Cooke as 14 Jan 1870 from the transcribed PRs which may not be correct if difficult to read. Once again a million thanks for your help. We are all aware of the style of email scams designed to extract money, but it would appear that the principle of such schemes is not new. This article is taken from "The Leicester Chronicle" of January 7, 1837. I just love the style of writing in old newspapers, but find it odd that the newspaper appears more to condemn the style of robbery, rather than robbery itself. The article is reproduced as written, with the lengthy sentences then used. "The Notorious Joseph Ady (says a correspondent) has begun his old tricks again. A few days back, a gentleman of Hinckley received an epistle, assuring him that on the remittance of a certain sum, Joseph would communicate some very valuable information. In this instance, the only effect produced was pity for a man so destitute of principle, and regret that no means of stopping the depredations of a cowardly thief, who, instead of meeting you on the highway and giving you a chance of resistance, comes to you through the legally established communications, and politely thrusts his hand in your pocket under the guise of an honest man. He is now pretty well known; but there may be persons who have not heard of him, and this notice is sent in order that crafty impudence may be prevented from imposing on credulous simplicity." My great-great-great-great-grandmonther Phoebe Shelton was born in Lougborough in 1787. The IGI lists a baptism at All Saints 31 May 1787 (daughter of Thomas Shelton and Hannah). There is then a marriage to William Woodhouse at St Margaret's, Leicester 9 May 1808. The IGI then lists the baptisms of five children at All Saints, Loughborough between 28 June 1809 and 10 July 1823 (John, Olivetta (my GGGGM), Emily, Alfred and Catherine). The NBI lists a burial at All Saints, Loughborough for Phoebe Woodhouse on 19 January 1835, aged 14, daughter of William and Phoebe. But I haven't found a birth for her in the IGI. There is a burial entry (in the NBI et al) for William Woodhouse at Loughborough All Saints on 14 May 1835 aged 46, FWK. In the 1841 census there is a household of Phoebe Woodhouse and the three youngest children (Alfred, Charles and Catherine) living in Pinfold Gate. HO107 / 595 / book 9 / folio 43 / page 11. (Indexed as Woodhouse Phebs). Then on 7 April 1844 there is a marriage between a Phebe Woodhouse (widow, daughter of Thomas Shelton) and William Hatfield at Loughborough All Saints. So far, I can find nothing after this. No deaths or burials for either William Hatfield or Phoebe Hatfield. Nor can I find them in the 1851 or 1861 census. Does anyone recognise this family ? Can anyone find any other references to William and Phoebe Hatfield ?
Good morning List, If you are a member of Ancestry, you can now have access to the original Parish Records & Bishop's Transcripts for Warwickshire. Be careful though when using Ancestry's Index, as there are a few misinterpretations of the writing. An absolute gem, especially if you have relatives in Warwickshire like me. Well done Ancestry....... June Fleetwood (Rainbow) West Yorkshire
HI, Does anyone have access to the PRs for Edith Weston. I'm looking for a marriage between 1816 and 1841 of ANN NUTT married to a Stanger possibly Edith Weston. She lived there from 1808 until she died between 1861 and 1871. All the best for now Regards Ken

I joined the Nottinghamshire Library simply to get this service at home, though it is on-line at Notts Archives, where I had previously used it. I had to go in person to a library to join, I went to Nottingham Central Library which anyway houses their Local Studies section. Although a native of Nottingham , I now live in Leicestershire, but this wasn't an obstacle to joining. I have found it so useful in finding births, deaths, court cases, and many other interesting stories which has added flesh to the bones of my research. They have so many Newspapers digitized, including the Nottinghamshire Guardian, and Derby Mercury, as well as the Leicester Chronicle, all of which carried stories of events beyond what we would normally consider their geographical spheres. As Nivard has said, if you can join somewhere, it is very worthwhile. Can any kind person help on information about Ezra Duval born 1848 at Leicester? He married Elizabeth Vann b. 1852 in 1869 in Leicester, they had a daughter Clara in 1871 and at this time he is found on the 1871 Census in Borough Gaol, High Cross St., St. Martin, Leicester. I would like to find out what he was imprisoned for. Thankyou, regards Joan (Adelaide South Australia)
