    2. Michael Wells
    3. Hello from New Zealand I have decided to look at my wife's maternal ancestors again having been contacted by a 3rd cousin of hers from Australia.. Richard ROYCE (the name appears in my wife's ancestry) was in the 1841 census, aged a rounded 70, as living in Buckminster Leics but not born in county. I believe he was christened in 1768 in Exton, Rutland. Is anyone able to help with his ancestry please? Were his parents Richard & Eliza (?)? Anything about previous generations would be most welcome. Thanks Mike

    3. Not sure how relevant but noticed many Norwegians changed their names, either from the family name to something like Jensen if father was Jens or took the farm or manor name, so if anything following them they escaped it on the voyage. Would be surprised if the occasional "roberts" became a "countesthorpe" that is to say a name with a connection to their roots. Not everything is easy to trace by just name. 3. It's for that very reason that the Hamburg Emigration records are divided into Direct and Indirect. The Direct went straight from Hamburg to America, Australia etc. The Indirect took ferries across the North Sea to Hull or Leith etc and then went by train to ports such as Liverpool or Glasgow to continue their journey. As Britain had the largest Merchant Fleet in the world at the time, it meant that they were able to offer more economical passages to migrants from the continent heading elsewhere in the world.
