Dear Nivard, Checking on old e-mails. I don't know if you and the others solved your query. I'm from Kirby Muxloe and can tell you that there are photographs in Kirby Free church (rebuilt after the bombing and re-opened 1953), including one which was savoured for obvious reasons. The building all collapsed (except the end wall), but the wayside pulpit remained intact infront of the rubble with the message it had prior to the bombing unscathed: "A sense of humour is a good defence against all knocks"! I am looking for confirmation of a marriage found on the IGI between John COLEMAN and Elizabeth HOLT on 18 Nov 1834 at St Margaret’s Leicester. I need to know if Elizabeth was a spinster or a widow. Does anyone have access to the PRs and could tell me this? That would be immensely helpful. Suzie (from Orkney)

Hi Michael, Is it possible that Richard ROYCE is the father of Frederick, I have checked the 1841 census and found John & Mary - John being born abt 1811, a son Richard 7 born 1834 and another son John is 5 born 1836 also two daughters Mary and Ann. A quick search of 1851 - cannot find them - maybe mistranscribed. Sorry I cannot help with the baptisms, but, if you check www.familysearch.org there is a baptism for a Richard ROYCE 30 Mar 1834 in Buckminster, Leic - parents John & Mary. Hello from New Zealand I wondered if anyone has access to PRs for Buckminster please? At this point I am looking for the death of John ROYCE b c 1819, the son of Francis & Mary. Thanks for any help. Mike
Hello & Happy New Year to all on the list, I recently bought FTM 2012. It is the first genealogy software that I have had, (so not an upgrade from an earlier version). I installed it onto my desktop, and the following day it had such a meltdown that it won't boot up - this is probably just co-incidence as computer was 9 yrs old and was running on XP with office 2003. I then installed it onto my netbook. I found that I had to adjust my screen resolution to get the bottom of the pages, but other than that it has been working well - until today. Its now very slow. I think that it may be due to the size of the file (1018 people and about 100 or so have at least some media attached). Some people also have complicated relationships (e.g. siblings from one family marrying siblings from another, first cousins marrying, and a woman whose second marriage was to her first husband's first wife's nephew) which may be using more memory than standard relationships. The other possibility is that the speed is due to it being on a netbook which has less memory than a desktop or laptop. Has anyone else experienced this slowness? Is the solution to divide the tree into branches? I have tried the help files but couldn't find instructions for this. Is there a maximum size/number of people per tree? I'm hoping someone can offer some advice/instructions to get back to the right speed. Thanks Sandra
This would probably be easy if I were a millionaire to buy all the registrations of missing twigs on my wife's family tree!! I'm not!! I have found Frederick William ROYCE in every census after his birth in 1864, what I want to know is "Who are his parents?". According to the 1871 census he was born in Sewstern, Leics but was living as a grandson with John & Mary ROYCE in the White Horse Inn, High St., Colsterworth, Lincs. In 1881 he was a groom for the HEAVENS in the High St., Colsterworth; thereafter in the police in Middlesex. I wondered if anyone has access to Sewstern baptisms about that time that could help. Thanks Mike
Hi Patricia If you are in need of a look up there are many people on the lists who may be able to help you, just ask Another alternative would be to visit your library and you will find they have the Ancestry Library Edition which is the worldwide subscription, this is accessed in the library on their computers, systems vary but you normally get 30 minutes or so free but you may get more if there is no-one waiting to use the computer There are also a range of other things you can access via your library service, most from home 24/7 See http://www.somerset.gov.uk/irj/public/services/directory/service?rid=/guid/10555cfa-0837-2c10-bfa7-f6c529e23494 Then there is the LDS centers , there may be one near enough to visit on occasion and who will have Ancestry and often Findmypast, you can also order in films of the census or Parish Registers etc Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS It was probably just an oversight but you have posted the entire digest back to the list, you need to copy the subject line of your post into your reply and delete all the other messages, leaving enough of yours to keep it in context Thankyou for the info Nivard. I didn't find them on the census because I don't pay to view on line and as I live in Somerset I cannot get to the Leicestershire Records Office. Regards Patricia

> Could someone one be christened with the > father's surname when their parents weren't > married yet? > Please, this is my dilemma. Absolutely. It was a time when one's "word" was accepted and no proof of marriage had to be given. After all, the prevailing belief was: Who would lie to a clergyman? And the Church would rather baptise an infant than leave him or her unbaptised. It was also not unheard of for parents to change the baby's name after baptism, either to curry favor with a family member or any other reason. I have a few of those in my grandmother's generation. I changed my own name at age 18, just before going into college. It was remarkably easy and quite legal. Lou

Hi Celia, I had this situation with one of my London families. In a big city they could get away with it by having the baby baptised in one church as if they were married and marrying in another church a few weeks later. If she sported a wedding ring and they both managed not to look shifty, the vicar baptising the baby would have no reason to suspect they were living in sin. You obviously need to go on checking to see if the baby was baptised in another Birmingham church after they married but keep an open mind. These ancestors do dish out the surprises. Lesley -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of Celia S Summers Dear List Members, Could someone one be christened with the father's surname when their parents weren't married yet? Please, this is my dilemma. John Wills & Ann Hill appeared to have been married 17 Feb 1824 in Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwick, England. Ann was born calculated 1802 in Kirkby Mallory, Leicestershire, according to the 1851 census (residence: Edgbaston, Warwick, England; Source information: HO107/2049, Registration district: Kings Norton, Sub-registration district: Edgbaston, ED: 2e, Folio: 192, Page: 10, Household schedule number: 38) I couldn't find Ann Hill's christening on familysearch, but I did find a Sarah Wills, chr. 28 Dec 1823 in Kirkby Mallory, Leicester, parents: John & Ann Wills. According the New York passenger list (arrival date: 16 Sep 1851, ship: Jersey) they had a daughter Sarah Wills, born calculated 1823 (but she was not with them on the 1841 or 1851 censuses). (The rest of the children were christened in St. Phillips, Birmingham.) If this is indeed their daughter she would have been christened 1 month 20 days before they were married, but I would think she would have the mother's name for a surname. Could the parents have gotten married two different times? Hopefully the answer lies in the Kirkby Mallory Bishop's Transcript. Thank you, Celia
