On this special day (since all of us HAVE mothers even though many of us are not mothers) and people on this list are supposedly interested in the Lemon/Lemmon family as well as genealogy, I MUST tell you about my latest find - while thanking a member of the list, Carole, in California. In addition, I would like to point (rather than bore or offend) some of you to my short Mothers' Day and Heritage tribute which I posted in response to my latest find! The "find" was Friday, May 8, 1998, and the tribute is at: http://www.mindspring.com/~jogt/lemon_md.htm The "find" regards John and Martha Lemon of Scott County, KY. Martha's first 2 children were Mary Hare (m. Jas. McCabe) and Jane Hare (m. William Mulberry). Martha was widowed from William Hare (also a Rev. War veteran) before she married John Lemon and moved to Scott County, KY in 1792. John and Martha's 7 children were:John M. b. 19 Feb 1792; James b. 14 Feb 1796; Robert b. 1 April 1796; George b. abt. 1800; Ann (m. Joel Mulberry) b. April 1802; Martha b. Aug prob. 1803/4; Vance b. 30 Aug 1806. Martha and John were both born in Ireland, and John and his brother, Robert, both served in the Revolutionary War - from Westmoreland Co., PA. Martha ( ) Hare Lemon, the matriarch for hundreds of Lemon, Mulberry and McCabe descendants in Scott County, is my third great grandmother - I salute her along with many other mothers who did great things in order for me to be here today. I have the entire Indiana 1860 Census. I will do lookups for Lehmans/Lemons. Please give me specific names (no "all the Lemons in a county" please). Norma Karter
Jo, This information was sent to me by a Barbee researcher who also had ties to a Lemon family. I have not seen the exact reference. I believe it is from "Genealogical Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files" Vol II, by Virgil D. White. When I am in the FHC library in Los Angeles I will double check. "John Lemon or Lemmon, Martha W3025, PA Line, sol enl in Westmoreland Co.,PA & he m there to Martha widow of William Hare or Hair, sol & wid had m about Christmas 1791 & later moved to Scott Co KY & sol d there 2 or 4 Jul 1820, wid appl 14 Sep 1838 Scott Co KY aged 79, children were John M b 19 Feb 1792, James b 14 Feb 1794, Robert b 1 Apr 1796, George b in Apr ?yr, Ann b Apr yr?, Martha b in Aug yr?, (all three illiegible) & Vance b 30 Aug 1806, also shown were; Mary Hare b 17 Feb 1787 & Jane Hare b 20 Feb 1789; in Feb 1848 sol's bro Robert Lemon was of Boone Co MO & had srv with him in the Rev War & had also lived in Scott Co KY before moving to MO." The Barbee researcher also claimed that the above John Lemon/Lemmon had a first marriage to an Elizabeth /unk/. Proof unk I have a picture of the Robert Lemon (brother of John Lemon) that was in an article about his family in Boone Co MO. He looks exactly like my grandfather. Information about Robert Lemon: b 1755 Tyron Co., Ireland, d 12 July 1848 Boone Co., MO. The article is in the book "My Father's People" by Rebecca (Becky) Hardin, pub 1982 Morresville IN; Library of Congress No 81-84053.Vol I. p 125-131. I have many notes on Lemon families but nothing that gives me the parents of my Margaret A. Lemon b 12 May 1816 Scott Co KY d 24 Dec 1891 Harrison Co KY wife of Rev. Joseph R. Barbee. I am leaving for a short trip and if it would help, when I return, I will go through and post information that I have on all of the Lemon families in my file. Rather than re-write all this I'm forwarding it to the entire list, hoping someone else can add to the information and/or questions that Carol and I have on Scott County, Kentucky LEMON family members. I have a lot of information posted on Scott County families, and would be very willing to consolidate any of YOUR information that could help me, Carol, or other Lemon researchers. I also maintain Harrison Co., KY pages and know there are Lemmon families there also - though these are presumably of no connection to the Scott Co. family. Let me know if you have info specific to these 2 counties that would help other researchers, and which you need help getting posted either on a web site or in the text archives. Elizabeth Petermann and John Ellebach-Ellerbach-Ellebeck immigrated to St Clair Co., IL, ca. 1860. It is not known if they married in Germany of in IL. They had a daughter Elizabeth Ellebach, who married George Lutz. John died after a few years and Elizabeth Peterman Ellebach married 2nd John Faith. George Lutz immigrated from Baden, after 1747, with his parents, names unknown. They settled in Shiloh and Belleville, St.. Clair Co., IL. George Lutz and Elizabeth Ellebach had a son, William, who married Louisa Hoepffner, daughter of Louis Hoepffner and Josephina Lehmann. Louis Hoepffner immigrated from Zweibruecken Rh Bavaria; and Josephinea Lehmann from Karlsruhe, Baden to St. Louis, MO., ca 1860 and then settled in St. Clair Co., IL. Searching German origins of these families: ELLEBACH, LUTZ, PETERMANN, HOEPFFNER, LEHMANN. Thanks, Ron Yielding
Seeking information about the Lemmon/Lemon families of Scott Co KY, especially - Margaret A Lemon, b 12 May 1816 Scott Co KY, d 24 Dec 1891 Cynthiana, Harrison Co., KY; m Joseph R Barbee ca 1834 Scott Co KY. I have information on the 11 children of Margaret A Lemon and Joseph R Barbee but I am at a standstill in proving the parents of Margaret A. Lemon. Their first two daughters were named Mary and Josephine, possible family names of Margaret A. Lemon since they do not appear in the Barbee family. Strong possibility for parents of Margaret A. are Joseph I. Lemmon and Margaret Leathers who also have a daughter named Josephine and Mary Ann. But I can find no proof of Margaret A as a daughter. Any new lead would be appreciated. Carole Gregory
Does any of my research notes (below) look familiar to anyone? Norma Karter's e-mail sure has a lot of similarities! Mary Jane LEMONS was my GG grandmother. I haven't gotten too far in my research on her family and I'd really appreciate any guidance! Joanne -------------------------------------------------- First Generation -------------------------------------------------- 1. Isaac LEMONS. Son of Jacob ? LEMONS. Born 27 Sep 1803 in Kentucky. August 1995 letter from Isla Todd Cain - John (X his mark) Lemmons of Green Co., KY may be the John (X) Lemmon/Laymon/Leamon in the Washington Co., TN, who sold out land there in 1795, and my John (X) Lemmons shows up in 1796 in Green Co., KY, 800 acres in what is still known as "Lemmons Bend" of the Green River of Taylor Co., taken from Green Co. Several years ago, a group of Lemons "cousins" went together and hired a professional researcher who went through all the Green, Taylor and Adair Cos., KY Deeds, Wills, Court Records, etc. and she did a grand job. All of these records I retyped and made into a booklet (70 pages) and have sold all of them so far, to relatives - even one who was in Saudi Arabia - a retired Major, who went over for TNT on a job. I spent hours going through all my extra Lemons notes and found no Isaac except mine, who died War 1812, his son d. enroute to Missouri, in Henry Co., TN and his son Isaac died in Polk Co., MO, none of the wives match yours. And found no more Isaacs in any of my notes! So can't help you much. However, in my letter file of 1971, I found the following for you: Wright Co., MO Thomas Jefferson Lemons born 20 Nov 20, 1849 MO died 3 May 1914 Wright Co., son of Isaac Lemons born Kentucky and Annie Reynolds born Virginia. Son of Thomas J. Lemons was: James Thomas Lemons born 4 Jun 1871 died 29 Oct 1934 married 26 Oct 1890 Wright Co., MO Cordelia Bledsoe born 20 Feb 1879 died 3 Dec 1950 Wright Co., MO. daughter of John Calvin Bledsoe born 1 Oct 1859 died 16 Apr 1936 and Carrie Bell McDowell 27 Feb 1856 died Apr 1935 Jackson Co., MO However, I may come up with something more later, and will let you know. The above information came from a Mrs. Lyell J. Moore, 1225 No. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, Iowa, dated Jan 1971 and doubt that she is still living, as her penmanship looked to be from an elderly person. However, you might locate a relative by diligent research, lots of patience and good luck. Looking for William Lemons who married Mary Reynolds in Hardin Co., KY in 1815. She is the daughter of Richard Reynolds. In 1814 Hardin Co KY tax lists there is an Abraham Lemmons and a John Lemmons. In 1815 Hardin Co KY tax lists Abraham and John are still there and now William Lemons is also listed (most likely my William after marrying Mary). Richard Reynolds is also listed. In 1816 they are all still listed. In 1817 they are all gone. 1818 tax list book is missing In 1819 they are not listed. Abraham Lemons married Nancy Melton in 1815 in Hardin co. KY. Sarah Diana Lemons married James Melton in 1815 in Hardin Co, KY. After the 1816 tax list in Hardin Co KY I lose my William Lemons. I do find a Richard Reynolds, James Melton and William Lemons in Lincoln Co TN census in 1820, but I have no proof that this is the same family. We find William again in 1837 where he signs a marriage license for his oldest son in Jefferson Co, IL. In 1840 William and his family move to Jefferson Co., MO. James Melton and his family also arrive in Jefferson Co., MO. In 1853 the Melton families and Lemons families move to Cooke County, Texas. William and Mary (Reynolds) Lemons had the following children: i. George Washington2 Lemons was born March 16, 1816. George died about Jan 1873 in Texas, at approximately 56 years of age. m. Tarsey Summerlin in Hamilton Co, IL May 10, 1837. 3 ii. Thomas Lemons was born 1818. Thomas died 1868 Cooke Co., TX, at 50 years of age m. Eloise Davis in Jefferson Co. MO June 27, 1842. 4 iii. John Wesley Lemons was born in Kentucky March 13, 1820. John died August 27, 1886 Cooke Co., TX, at 66 years of age m. Jane Murrell in Jefferson co., MO July 7, 1842 5 iv. William Riley Lemons was born in Tennessee February 11, 1822. William died February 28, 1893 in Granby, Newton Co., Missouri, at 71 years of age m.Francis Murrell before 1844. 6 v. James Berry Lemons was born Jefferson Co, IL Aug 5, 1830. James died October 1, 1914 McCulloch Co, TX, at 84 years of age m. Serina A. Craig in Jefferson Co., MO December 28, 1850. 7 vi. Frances Melvina Lemons was born Feb 11, 1833. Frances died Dec 28, 1893 at 60 years of age m. Elbert Ogle in Jefferson co., MO March 14, 1850. 8 vii. Rosannah Lemons was born 1836. Rosannah died Oct 18, 1872 at 36 years of age m. John M. Breazeale in Cooke Co., TX March 25, 1858. 9 viii. Josiah Francis Lemons was born in Illinois December 24, 1838. Josiah died April 12, 1914 Voca, McCulloch Co, TX, at 75 years of age m. Mary Diane Melton in Cooke Co, TX June 21, 1865. 10 ix. Mary Emily "Polly" Lemons was born in Missouri 1842. Mary died before 1880 m. John Bradford Hays in Cooke Co TX August 20, 1860. There is a Willis B. Lemons and an Abraham Lemons that filed for land in 1853 in Cooke County Texas at the same time as my Lemons family. They sold their certificates and we have no record of them although family history says they may have been William's brothers or cousins. Most of the descendants of William and Mary lived in Southern Oklahoma, Montague Co TX, Clay Co., TX, McCulloch Co TX, Jack Co, TX and Cooke Co TX. Does anyone connect with these Lemons? Norma Karter
If you have a LEMING (LEMMONS) line that connects to east and/or middle TN during 1780s to 1850s, I would like to hear from you and exchange information. I am trying to sort these families out. Several of them lived in burned counties where early records are scarce. The known counties where they lived include: Bedford, Cocke, Coffee, Davidson, Greene, Marshall, and Williamson. Some of them may have gone west to Gibson Co., TN. Thanks. Nova Lemons lemstar@juno.com
George W. LEMONS (1830 -1889) and J. H. LEMONS (1833-1888) are buried near Gravelly, Scott Co., AR and were said to have lived in Yell Co., AR. Would like to know more about these two men and who their parents were. Were they brothers? George's wife was Nancy GARNER. Their children were said to have moved to OK. If this is your line or if you have information on them, I would like to hear from you. Thanks! Nova Lemons lemstar@juno.com
