    3. In Legacy I *should* log place names in this format: City, County, State, Country I'd like to capture the "town" that the city is in -- for example, Port Rowan is in Walsingham Township in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. Port Rowan, Walsingham Township, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada How should I log the "Walsingham Township" piece without throwing off the appropriate formatting? Is there another field I can log this in?

Is there another field I can log this in? It depends on what you want to happen with this extra information. Do you want it to appear in reports? Or do you just want it for your own information? If you want it for your own information, you could just use the Location Notes field. If you want it to appear in reports... What's wrong with Port Rowan, Walsingham Township, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada? Legacy can handle locations with up to 9 parts. But you may want to add a placeholder comma to all your other location names to make sorting on the Master Location List work correctly. Such as... Cincinnati, , Hamilton, Ohio, USA This could be a lot of work depending on how many master locations you have. Or you could just put it in the Short Location Name for those locations that have a 5th part. Then use the Short Location name in your reports. Further to Dennis' and Jim's replies . . . I use as many parts in my locations as I feel they require and do not overly concern myself with Legacy's "appropriate" formatting. The "high order" or right to left sort was added to Legacy at my suggestion (and insistence) many years ago. However it was never fully implemented. The suggestion was that Legacy should process all locations internally in this format and that the City, State, etc. terms for the location parts be dropped. There are even a few locations in the USA that don't fit Legacy's overly-rigid 4-part format. Now, as Legacy is being promoted to international users, this rigid format and its terms are becoming an even greater issue that won't go away -- locations in some countries have only 2 parts and those users don't want to see a bunch of extraneous commas! Like you, I have some locations starting with the township and I have others with a preceding village name. I keep my location sort order set to "right to left" and I ensure that all locations contain the country name. I don't use print-outs so am not aware of any reports that may be affected by this but I don't believe it to be a factor. One feature of Legacy that *is* affected is the Geo Location Database which only uses the last 4 parts of the location (Note: this isn't yet loaded with our Canadian counties). Another feature that ties in with Geo is the Distance and Bearing Calculator which will only function if Geo can find the "City" in its database or you've previously entered the latitude and longitude for it. Geo contains Port Rowan as a "City" but doesn't contain Walsingham, so having Port Rowan as the 5th part of the location will prevent Geo from finding it. Geo cannot be modified by the users so it is not currently possible to add Walsingham twp. to it. So for full functionality of Legacy it *is* best to keep the "City" within the 4 highest-order location parts. Variable location parts are the norm in many other genealogy programs as well as in gedcoms, so transfers via gedcom are not affected by the use of more or less than 4 parts. One final thing . . . if, for some reason, you later find that you want to change the way you have your locations it should be a relatively simple matter to go through the Master Location List and edit them. But it's *not* so simple to add parts that you've tucked away in notes or other places. Good luck with whatever you decide. Cheers, -- Dave N. -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---
