    3. I've just lost a day's worth of work when I did a GEDCOM. I was making source entires for census records & the text that I had entered totally disappeared. It holds onto Detail Information but not Detail Text when I do the GEDCOM. I still have the original file but really would like to back up this via GEDCOM as well as when I do a Family File backup. I'm thinking its just a setting but not about to tinker with the program yet again without some input. Any thoughts (hopefully *very* basic steps) would be appreciated. Sheila

It should still be in your Legacy family file. Perhaps the problem is that you are making gedcoms for other than Legacy. Do realize that gedcoms do not necessarily contain *all* the information that's in your Legacy family file. Even a gedcom for "Legacy" may omit a minute portion of your data. > I still have the original file but really would like to back up this > via GEDCOM as well as when I do a Family File backup. If you want a gedcom backup then use the "Produce file for" Legacy gedcom. This will contain more of your data than any other type of gedcom. Folks who make gedcoms as backups and then restore from them are likely to lose a few bits and pieces of their data. Gedcoms are to be used to transfer data to other programs and no two programs store data the same way so there is always a possibility of data loss. If you are using Legacy and want a reliable backup then use File > Backup Family File to create a zipped backup that contains all your data. Note that graphic images etc. that are linked in the Legacy file are *not* contained in this (or any gedcom) backup. To back these up you should use File > Backup Multimedia Files. 3. Sheila, I don't know if this has been answered - I lost track of the Legacy-L list while we were dealing with our server problems here. When you created the gedcom, did you select "Override Source Options"? If you don't have Detail Text selected to show on reports, it won't be exported in the gedcom. You need to select this option to export *all* source data. Thanks for using Legacy. I still think this was a terrible implementation decision. Report options should have nothing to do with GEDCOMs. <insert long sigh here> -- Dennis Kowallek kowallek@iglou.com ******************

    3. Thanks Sherry but I uninstalled v. 6 & reinstalled v. 4. I have had the Deluxe version of 4 & still not sure why I went with any of the higher versions. For some reason the higher I went, the more unstable the versions became. Thought at first it was my computer but ended up trying it on various computers that I have with different amounts of RAM. I kept having to reinstall with one headache after another. I love the Legacy program but honestly don't need all the multi-media bells & whistles. I want only a stable program in which I can enter my information as safely as possible. I've just decided to enter detail text in the Notes section & source that as well so I don't have to be concerned about the source text dissapearing. I love Legacy & am content with v. 4 so all worked out just fine for my needs. I'm sure there are numerous genealogy purists who feel I've done things right however sadly, I'm not horridly computer savvy when it comes to the improvements in the higher versions. Thus, I'm back to enjoying Legacy & have finished making all the entries that kept getting lost. I've learned a lot from the experience & came out quite content. Many thanks for the sugestion & will keep it on file. 3. That's what I had to do also, Sheila. I _bought_ v.6 only to find out that it was the biggest memory hog of any program I have ever owned (Musicmatch Jukebox held the record until I got Legacy v.6). I have Win98SE and Legacy v.6 used 55% of my resources taking me down to less than 5%. When you reach 5% in Windows 98, it's reboot time. WinXP doesn't have the resource problem and I suppose Win2000 doesn't also. So, I re-installed Legacy v.5 and it runs well (but it still uses 40% of my resources). In looking at v.6 the only "improvement" I could discern was that it connects you to the Internet every time you start it (thus has some kind of browser built in). Since I want to choose whether or not I'm connected to the Internet, I don't think I'll ever be using v.6 again, even when I get a new computer which is going to have to be pretty soon. -- Dan Cooley Sheila Chonko wrote: > Thanks Sherry but I uninstalled v. 6 & reinstalled v. 4.
