    3. David, I've not seen the Error 3020 before. Do you recall the full error message with that problem? I'm going to check with the webmaster on the linking for that error message. I would strongly suggest that a backup be done before ever importing *anything* into an existing file! I would say that the linking problems could have resulted from aborting the import, but I'm not sure. Did you try a merge? Thanks for using Legacy. I was importing from another Legacy database. When ran File Maintenance Check/Repair, I discovered that many invalid marriages had been added, some with male "wives" or female "husbands, and others with randomly selected wives and husbands. I have tried to fix this manually by unlinking the bad marriages, but there are hundreds of them. Do I have any other options here other than manually checking every marriage record and deleting the bad ones? Does this error cause any other damage that needs to be corrected, other than the bogus messages? The online help for message 3020 just points me to directions for installing the latest Legacy update date, but I already have that. Unfortunately, I do not have a recent backup. 3. I was attempting to add siblings to my direct ancestor's family. In the process I got some families mixed up, and as I didn't know how to unlink them, I decided to delete all of the affected persons and re-do them. Now when I re-add the parents, the "preferred" child is not highlighted. All of the generations up to my error highlite the child correctly. How do I correct this? Cathy

Yes it was error number 3021, although at the time I thought the message was referring to RIN 3021. In any case, I followed the directions for resolving RIN 3021 as best I could. WindowsXP would not install the Jet 4.0 Service Pack, saying that the code I had was more current than the patch. I have WindowsXP with SP2 and all service updates as of today. I have done all the other steps and I am exporting the repaired database to a new copy now. Thanks again, David

    3. The last time I imported new data into my main database, I got an error that said that the last deleted entry was not available and I had to quit the import. I got the same error when I tried to renumber the RINs in my main database. I finally got the import to work by telling Legacy not to reuse abandoned RINs. I was importing from another Legacy database. When I got through with with merging after the import, I discovered that all the marriages were mixed up, with correct marriages being replaced or supplemented by bogus ones, so that I wound up with two extra "wives" (both male). I tried to fix this manually by unlinking the bad marriages, but eventually gave up. Luckily, I had made a recent backup and was able to redo the import and merge without incident. However, this still makes me very nervous about future updates. Anyone have any idea what happened here and how to keep it from happening again? How can I connect these two groups of families? I don't understand the problem. You can add individuals/families at any time, it doesn't matter in what order they are entered into the database. They don't all have to be connected. For example I have one Legacy database that contains over 300 different trees. When the connection between any of these is found they will be linked together. To connect a tree with a parent to a tree with a child -- in Family View have the correct *pair* of parents displayed then click in the children's area and select Link to an Existing Son/Daughter, go to the correct child, and Select. If you have two known brothers (siblings) and don't know who their parents are then add a pair of "Unknown" parents and link the two children to them. When the parents' names are discovered you can edit the "Unknown"s and add the new-found details. If the above doesn't answer your question then please explain in more detail just what you're trying to accomplish. Bon chance. 3. On 26 Oct 2004 gisb wrote: > So now I have two separate name lists and would like to connect them. It sounds as though you have created 2 different family files. When you start Legacy do you select the file you want to work with -- either the one with you in it or the one with your 2G-Grandparents? If this is the case then you need to combine them into one family file (database) and then Merge the duplicates. Before doing this there is one *very*important* step -- MAKE BACKUPS!! Open each file in turn and click on File > Backup family file. Since these are temporary backups it is OK to save them to your hard disk/drive. Note: before doing any "major" operation make a backup. If that operation consists of a few steps then it's advisable to make another backup (with different name) after each step. This way if something doesn't work out the way you wanted you can always go back to the previous step that was OK instead of starting over from the very beginning. So now you have backups of *both* family files let's combine them. To do this open the one that has the name you prefer to keep then click on File > Import from > Legacy file, and select the other family file then click Open. This will combine your files into one. Check the Name List to see if all names are listed -- obviously any that were in both files will appear twice (for now). If all names are there then you could make another backup before merging the duplicates -- click on File > Backup family file and give the backup a name such as "Combined". Now you need to merge the duplicates together. Since you know which ones are duplicated it's best to perform a Manual Merge. So click on the Merge icon and select Manual Merge. Unless you've turned off reminder messages you should be prompted to make a backup. This is a nice reminder in Legacy but don't wait for reminders -- do it often! Since you already have the latest backup you may click Continue. The Merge Individuals window can be a bit daunting to first-time users but don't panic. The individual on the Left is the one that will be retained so you need to ensure that the left one has the most data and family links. The currently-highlighted individual is automatically placed on the Left side. If the one you need to merge is someone else then click on Select Left and select them. Then click on Select Right and find the duplicate. Differences in data between these two individuals are now displayed and you can select which you wish to retain by clicking on it to place a dot beside it. Check all data for all tabs -- General, Family, Events, Pictures, etc. With Notes you have the option to replace what's on the Left with what's on the Right or to append the Right notes to the Left ones. Ensure that everything you want to keep is copied to the Left Side. Don't worry about family members/links as they will be picked up later -- either automatically or manually. When everything looks right (perhaps that should say "Left") click on Merge Right Individual Into Left Individual. Legacy may notice that a parent/spouse/child is also duplicated and if so will perform an automatic merge on its own. Some users prefer to keep their paternal and maternal lines in separate Family files -- perhaps so they won't fight ;-) IMHO this is not a good idea as there will be duplicates especially as you add your children and grandchildren. Paternal and maternal lines can be tagged separately within one family file so even when they are all in one database you can still generate reports for just one line. If I've guessed incorrectly and your individuals are all in one family file after all or this doesn't help . . . . . . then ask again. Cheers, -- Dave -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---

    3. On 11 Oct 2004 Diane Murach wrote: > Does anyone have a plan on the best approach to insert a person in > Legacy, especially when the ancestor line has about five more > generations and lots of notes? You can add the person into Legacy as "new unlinked individual". To insert that person into a linked line, go to the person where you need to break the line, right click and "Unlink". Then link to the new individual from both open ends. When adding a child into a family it's easier to have the family showing and to add the (existing) child. Working from the child and attempting to add the parents often results in creation of a second marriage for one of the parents. Because it's easy to make mistakes -- always make a backup copy of your database before any editing. Then if it doesn't work out right for you, restoring from that backup may be easier than fixing the damaged file. Also make another backup when you're sure each change is OK. So in the above example make a backup before any changes. Make another after adding your new individual. Make a third after the first successful link, and so on. Give each backup a different name or number so you'll have them all until you're absolutely sure everything is OK. As with any computer work -- backup, backup, backup! It doesn't matter if you totally ruin your database when you can easily revert to a good backup. Oh yes, one other thing, periodically test a backup to ensure that it's a good one. I remember one person (not a Legacy user) who was so proud of their backup-making skills until they needed to restore one and discovered that they only had a backup of the file's icon! BTW, I still have backups going back well over 10 years! Furthermore I keep recent ones on a daily basis. They've been invaluable to me when I've needed to check back to see when something was changed. Good luck. Cheers, -- Dave -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---
