Hi list I have been downloading updates of Legacy free, for years now without any trouble but the last couple of times I have tried I have had problems. This time I keep getting the following message. "Could not connect to the network server, error 3". Then, "404 not found". It doesn't happen when I download from other sites. I should say that I am not very computer savvy (or more appropriately, extremely unsavvy) but it seems to have been happening since I had my computer upgraded. Zone alarm is one of the things that my computer guy added. Could this be a problem. Any suggestions gladly received. When you attempt to update Legacy, ZA should be opening a window asking you if it's OK to let it do so. You need to click "Remember this" and "Allow". If ZA is not opening a window then it's because it's previously been told "No". To change this you need to view the "Programs" in ZA and change the permission setting from an X to a checkmark by clicking on it. Good luck. Hi List, I have a few questions concerning assigning pictures to sources. Currently I am assigning census images to my census events. I am noticing in the "Assigned Sources for [individual]" I can assign a picture. Once I save this assignment I go back to the "Edit Event for [individual]." I know notice that I have an "Add Picture, etc" icon at the top and I seem to be redoing the same thing. Once I add here, the image appears in the lower right side of the window. A couple questions at this point. What is the purpose of having this perceived double assignment? When I click on the picture, I then go to the picture gallery window. Is there a way to get the picture to pull up in the quick look window from the edit event field? Similar to when a picture is clicked from the family view. Currently, I have to go my computer and try to figure out where I have stored the image. I am using Version 6, deluxe edition. Gordie Fears

Usually when re-installing to correct problems it's best to delete all your user (*.USR) files before the re-install. But if things are now OK then it seems that step didn't need to be done in your case. > would love to just go back to Version 5 as this version has been > totally unstable for me. Legacy 6, like most modern programs, is a hog for computer resources. So for it to run well you need a fairly new (fast) computer running WinXP and with *at*least* 512 Mb of RAM (preferably much more). You also must have *at*least* double the size of your RAM available as free space on your hard disk -- this applies to any computer. The latest release of version 5 uses the same database format as version 6 so going back to it *should* be no problem. However I would recommend uninstalling version 6 *before* installing version 5, as otherwise some common files may be removed when you uninstall version 6. As always . . . make sure you make more than one type of backup before doing anything this major -- make a Legacy Backup as well as a gedcom and also copy your family file (all these) to another location on your hard disk (or elsewhere). After uninstalling Legacy 6 and before installing 5, remove all files (but not folders) from your Legacy folder (assuming it remains). > I'm at the point that i'm really frightened of losing my information as > its been 20 years on the making Always make sure you have adequate backups and check your backups periodically to ensure that they are good ones -- I'll never forget one person who made a "backup" of their family file and then when it was needed discovered that it was only a backup of the icon with a shortcut to the now-missing family file!! Good luck. Cheers, -- Dave N. -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---
Hi Dave! I can't renumber the RIN's because I have the free version of 6.0 I tired when I imported a test GEDCOM but didn't correct the situation at all. It opens about 7 generations before me & never did that before until a couple days ago. I redownloaded the latest free version of Legacy plus any updates and that seemed to correct the problem of my grandfather being deleted from the program. I installed it over the previous version & if that isn't right, I'd appreciate the steps to uninstall/reinstall. l not sure why my grandfather kept being deleted totally from the program as all his ancestors & descents remained. & honestly would love to just go back to Version 5 as this version has been totally unstable for me. I'm at the point that i'm really frightened of losing my information as its been 20 years on the making not only for me but others who have shared info with me. I apologize if I've not been clear & hopefully you can advise if I need to uninstall & reinstall differently. Many thanks! I've been using Legacy for several years now & have updated over time. I purchased my first 2 versions however finances prevents me from getting anything but the free versions now offered. I had decent luck with it until several months ago with v. 6. Think I've messed up a setting or perhaps the program has become corrupt..... thus my question. First off... when I first started genealogy, in my naivety I began entries with my paternal grandparents. I discovered how to set the preferred family but when the GEDCOM was imported it would open to my paternal grandparents names. I never could figure out how to correct this so would just explain to anyone with whom I shared a GEDCOM. Would love to change this if possible. Secondly.....I create GEDCOMs about 2-3 times monthly & burn to a CD for my back-up. During the process of a customary pre-burning double check, I started noting about a month ago that not all files were always transferring to the GEDCOM. The files began to delete my paternal grandfather however his siblings & ancestors would still be in their own file. Thought I had it corrected when I re-entered & relink him to his wife/children. The real kicker was when the next GEDCOM that I made opened without an error. This has been a situation that won't remain stable one way or another. Today, when I tried importing my most recent GEDCOM as a double check, the file was truncated again at my paternal grandparents. I righted the file & did yet another test GEDCOM under another name. That one included my grandparents however truncated a line that was added just this morning. Also, at the times when my GEDCOM isn't going to come out correct, I get an error log at the end of the import of files I've corrected repeatedly......more times that I care to think about. I've thought about uninstalling & reinstalling but wasn't sure if it was necessary. Admit that I'm not sure how to do it properly anyway. I'd go back to v. 5 but it won't install since I have v. 6 installed.... sounds goofy to do so but I'm at wits end. Any thoughts, ideas & suggestions will be appreciated beyond words. I'm petrified of losing my years of work as well as GEDCOMS from others who have shared their research with me. Many thanks! Sheila

I have to agree with Nancy. I bought the videos a few months back, and have really learned a lot from them. & I keep referring back to them and listen again to see what I might have missed the first time. I really recommend you buy the videos if you have Legacy Deluxe. They are really helpful! :>) & no, I'm not affiliated with Millennia Corp! Buy 'em you'll not regret it! Your response makes it sound like you still have a "large" tree that contains the problem. If that is so then break it up further. If that is not the case and *all* trees are problem free then what happens when you re-link them one-by-one and recheck them after each re-link? At some point the problem should reappear (or you'll be problem-free)! If the problem still exists and you cannot find the problem (after you get all the trees back together and only have one tree) then send me a *backup* of your family file and I'll see if I can find the problem for you. Obviously I will treat your data with the strictest confidence and will erase the file after checking it. Cheers, -- Dave N. -- David Naylor, Halton Hills, Ontario, Canada. ---

I am new to the list and turning to you in desperation. In other words; I thought I could fix it myself: What a joke. Several months ago I changed to a new computer. I installed Legacy on the new computer and GEDCOMed my files over from Legacy on the old computer. Ever since that time, I have been unable to use the software, except for a *new* family file I am working on for a friend. Talk about a mess! The Relationship Calculator, which used to be heavily used, does not work. I get the *endless loop* message box. One relationship calculation that I carried on to the end said 'first cousin 589 times removed'! I have consulted "Help". It does not tell you what to do. I have searched these archives and the closest to instructions seem to be: "...Cancel the Report to stop building the report. You should then research and fix the relationship loop problem". Research and fix how? When I go to Family View (my preferred), I have, for example, grandparents as the children. I have tried unlinking, but it does not help. Are there explicit instructions somewhere that I need to read? What did I do in the first place to make this happen? I really need to fix the problem - either that or buy different software. I think I saw somewhere yesterday that it's time to 'buy' an upgrade. I just bought the version I am using last October! All help appreciated and gratefully accepted. June
