Although I didn't get the 404 message I had the page freeze up constantly during the steps before actually getting to the "Download" button. Legacy Support suggested that all Temporary Internet Files should be deleted before attempting to get the update. Didn't make a difference in my case but this may help if you're getting the 404 message. In Internet Explorer this involves going to "Tools/Internet Options" and on the General tab looking in the middle of the dialogue box and clicking on "Delete Files" in the Temporary Internet files section. In the resulting box place a tick where it says "delete all offline content" and then OK. Next you should press the "Delete Cookies" button in the same section and then OK. Press OK again at the bottom of the box and then try to access the Legacy pages again. The Users Group and Legacy Support both say they've had no problem getting updates using either Mozilla or IE but too many people have reported this 404 problem for it to be coincidence. I wonder if Millennia have changed settings on their servers? Kim
All of this about cookies and temporary Internet files and .exe files is just a Legacy smoke screen. You don't have to delete cookies and temp files. You don't have to delete .exe files or anything else. Those are things the customer service dolts are told to tell you and keep you screened out. In fact, you definitely shouldn't delete all cookies. You have too many important cookies to do that. What about online banking, etc. You don't want to delete those. A *404* message is "address *NOT FOUND*". Legacy has given you a bum URL. Get them to put the right URL in their update routine...if they have it...heh! heh! heh! -- Dan Cooley I just tried again to update my Legacy 6.0 and had the 404 message given. All cookies and temp files had been deleted. As far as I'm concerned this is Legacy's problem, not mine. I've never had a problem updating before until now. Hope that they monitor this list to see how many of us are having problems. > Beth Ann > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kim Milne" <rags@arach.net.au> > To: <LEGACY-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, June 28, 2006 7:39 PM > Subject: [LEGACY] Update problems > Although I didn't get the 404 message I had the page freeze up > constantly during the steps before actually getting to the "Download" > button. I am having a problem updating my Legacy 5 Deluxe Build 20 Jan 2006 to the final 22 May 2006 one. What I get when I try to install is "could not communicate to the network server Error 3" "404 not found." I don't want to upgrade to Legacy 6 Deluxe but what is wrong. I have never had problems updating before. Victoria
Hi Dave! I did make a Family File back-up & all the Source Text disappeared on that as well. That's when I figured I had some kind of setting that is off someplace. Its only 1 day's worth of work but I would like to get things righted as I transfer my files to my laptop for an additional back-up, too. You taught me well about back-ups & I intend to keep them up sufficiently. If you have any other ideas they are welcome. Otherwise, its back to v. 4 deluxe that I have on CD & I'll just reenter this info.... no big thing. I'm growing a tad weary of v. 6 & v.4 always worked wonderfully for my needs as I don't need the multi-media or all the bells & whistles. Now off to my 6 year old grandson's baseball game. I need some time away from the computer & Legacy. :) Sheila ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Naylor" <dcnaylor@sympatico.ca> To: <LEGACY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 27, 2006 6:45 PM Subject: Re: [LEGACY] Source text disappearing > On 27 Jun 2006 Sheila Chonko wrote: > >> I've just lost a day's worth of work when I did a GEDCOM. > > I doubt that you've really lost anything -- the text wouldn't have > disappeared. If you want a gedcom backup then use the "Produce file for" Legacy gedcom. This will contain more of your data than any other type of gedcom. Folks who make gedcoms as backups and then restore from them are likely to lose a few bits and pieces of their data. I've just lost a day's worth of work when I did a GEDCOM. I was making source entires for census records & the text that I had entered totally disappeared. It holds onto Detail Information but not Detail Text when I do the GEDCOM. I still have the original file but really would like to back up this via GEDCOM as well as when I do a Family File backup. I'm thinking its just a setting but not about to tinker with the program yet again without some input. Any thoughts (hopefully *very* basic steps) would be appreciated. Sheila
I talked with tech support again. He had me delete all my individual files under the Legacy folder (and retain the other folders and their contents.) Then I downloaded the full Legacy software and it worked!! I did have to import my data file. Everything seems to be working Glenda Holmes
Just to let you all know that Legacy support contacted me and suggested that I download the full setup instead of the "install from the web" option and that worked perfectly. I was having the same problem as everyone else. One of the error messages suggested that I needed to remove any old .exe files. I checked in my Legacy file and found a file called Legacy.exe. I deleted that file and then I double clicked on the new Legacy6setup.exe file and it loaded and worked just fine. I then made a new shortcut for Legacy on my desktop. Hope this helps someone. Hello, I am having exactly the same problem updating my de luxe version of Legacy 5, and cannot, despite there being one. I have been trying to solve it since the 22nd May. Looks like I am also going to have to get my computer suppliers to look at it. At a cost of Lord Knows what! They also are unfamiliar with the software. I shall probably not bother and carry on without the updates, and if necessary replace completely with a different application. I have used Legacy since Legacy 4 and been quite happy with it, but now, we will see. Yes, Legacy really needs to look into this. I too have been having problems downloading the update. After talking to tech support, I downloaded the full update, then tried downloading the full software program. It's good to set permissions in ZA David but that's not her problem. It's not Zone Alarm; Firewall or anti-virus program. Her computer can't find "Legacy's New Server". The old server's cookie is in a "temp file" somewhere on her hard drive that she needs to find, and delete so Legacy's new server's cookies will work. She also needs to know what Legacy Server cookies look like, so she can recognize it . I've been fighting that same problem for the last two weeks. I was on the verge of junking Legacy/ Clooz and any other software connected to it, I was pulling my hair out, screaming at my poor husband. Legacy's Support could not help me , so I finally had to take my computer to our computer repair Tech. Legacy Support didn't help him much either. He finally found the problem on his own after four days of trying to work with software he was totally unfamiliar with. My computer Tech's business is called Eagle II, he lived up to the name. Finally after eight day's of struggle, I finally got the updates. My husband deserves a medal, for what he endured. Legacy needs a better way to help those of us who are not tekkies. Yes, that sounds like it. You need to tell ZA to permit Legacy to access the internet. When you attempt to update Legacy, ZA should be opening a window asking you if it's OK to let it do so. You need to click "Remember this" and "Allow". If ZA is not opening a window then it's because it's previously been told "No". To change this you need to view the "Programs" in ZA and change the permission setting from an X to a checkmark by clicking on it. Good luck.
