Good Morning Leedhams, This is the new "Welcome" message that will automatically be sent with each "subscribe" to this mailing list. Please read and keep this message and if you have any suggestions, comments, or ideas, or see any errors, please e-mail me at: lacywinston@earthlink.net As always, I welcome all of your thoughts. Welcome to the LEEDHAM-L mailing list!! **Please save a copy of this message for future reference** The list administrator is Nancy Lewis Millsap lacywinston@earthlink.net Please read this entire message BEFORE you post a message to LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com. You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to LEEDHAM-L as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to "digest mode" are given below. 1. Purpose. The LEEDHAM-L list is for the research, discussion, and exchange of information about LEEDHAM genealogy. 2. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command "unsubscribe" without quotes and with no additional text (if you have difficulty removing your signature lines, you can put the word "quit" on the line after "unsubscribe"). If your e-mail address goes bad or your mailbox fills up, you will be automatically un-subscribed by the mailing list software after the fourth message in a row bounces back to RootsWeb. 3. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you would not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to re-subscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com. 4. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "subscribe" to LEEDHAM-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. Second, send the command "unsubscribe" to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. 5. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 6. If you would like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. Don't send it explicitly to both mailing lists. 7. The list administrator for the LEEDHAM-L list is Nancy Lewis Millsap, lacywinston@earthlink.net. If you have problems getting un-subscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I will try to resolve the problem. 8. Even if you decide not to save this message, please try to remember that, like all the SURNAME-L lists at RootsWeb, the subscribe and unsubscribe messages go to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com, not to the LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com list itself. 9. The mailing list is presently installed at RootsWeb, which is the home of the RootsWeb. See http://www.rootsweb.com for information about RootsWeb. It's not necessary to pay anything to subscribe to any of its mailing lists. 10. Message format and attachments. Please submit messages only in plain text, and do not submit attachments. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Please, always use a helpful subject line like "John DOE d. 1800 in IA", rather than a generic one line "inquiry about my family line". 11. Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. Therefore, the LEEDHAM-L list will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to LEEDHAM genealogy. Do not include prices and ordering information; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an e-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case of doubt, send the message to the list administrator, lacywinston@earthlink.net, and I will review it and forward it to the list if appropriate. 12. Copyrights. Any person sending a message to the list retains the copyright to that message. By sending the message, you grant to the list administrator, and to his/her heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large. You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list. 13. Archives. At present, the archival copies are stored at Rootsweb.com and can be retrieved by anyone. To get a list of the messages that have been archived, send a message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject: archive SEARCH Subject: latest/* and nothing in the body of the message. You will get back a message that looks something like this: ARCHIVE search subject: latest/* BEGIN--------------cut here-------------- Latest/23:10:Subject: Re: John DOE query (fwd) Latest/24:12:Subject: Looking for Samuel FORWOOD Latest/25:15:Subject: inquiry END-----------------cut here--------------- If you decide you want to read the message about John DOE, the "latest/23:" part of the line identifies the file containing the message. Send another message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject Archive SEND latest/23 and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time. 14. Do Not's. Do not send spam e-mail messages to the list. Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to the list. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files, and any other type of attachment.
