    1. [LEEDHAM] New Website
    2. Good Morning Listers, I received this information about a new website, from another list: Established in 2000, The Olden Times scans makes scanned images of individual articles from original issues of 18th, 19th and early 20th century newspapers from around the United States. "Old newspapers are treasure troves of clues," explained Barbara Allen, the founder of The Olden Times. "The problem is that not many of them are indexed, at least not for the names of those of our ancestors who weren't rich & famous!" The new index, launched on the Genealogy Today web site this month, is an index of the 2,000+ clippings from The Olden Times web site searchable by surname, state, year and type of article. "The index will include old news articles, birth, death and marriage announcements, legal notices, and advertisements," added Barbara. "Advertisements, an often overlooked resource, may help pinpoint exactly what kind of store your great-grandparents had. And, the news of a local fire may explain why your great-grand uncle picked up and moved to California." "While many old newspapers may be safely preserved in microfilmed collections, you might have trouble finding any mention of an ancestor unless you already know of an event that might have been reported and the newspaper in which the item would have appeared. Now with the index at Genealogy Today, you can research all of your surnames in a matter of minutes." To access the index, visit http://www.genealogytoday.com/times/olden/index.html Your Old ListMom

    1. [LEEDHAM] Independence Day
    2. Good Afternoon Listers, >From your Old ListMom, who loves you more than the red, white & blue, a wish to each of you for a safe and joyful celebration this Independence Day. If you decide to roam the 'net for The Fourth, I hope you will enjoy the list of websites below. This holiday some of us will eat & drink too much; some will spend the evening endangering their communities with pyrotechnics; some will parade the main streets of town dressed in funny costumes and pelt small children with candy. However, you choose to spend the 4th, please take time to remember those who authored the original doctrine for this nation's freedom, the Declaration of Independence. Such a simple concept, yet so complete that after more than two centuries, it remains the basis for every personal freedom we enjoy today. 1. [LEEDHAM] Message from ListMom: SS-5 Request Increase - Please Read
    2. Dear Listers, The U.S. government, ever our benefactor, has decided to increase the cost of SS-5 (social security application)copy requests from $7 to $27, effective 1 July 2001. You can read about the increase at: http://genealogy.about.com/library/tips/bissrates.htm If you have SS-5 copies for your ancestors buried in your research, please get them out and transcribe the information for others via RootsWeb, following the instructions below. We will all be in your debt. 1. Go to: http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi 2. Enter the name of the person who is on the form you have into the search engine. 4. When the right entry comes up, go over to the far right and click on "Add Post-Em" link. 5. The "Fill in the blank" form will come up and you can type in the information just like it's printed on the form you have in your hands! 6. Include all the information in the order that it is entered on the form, so that others have the advantage of all that information. NOTE: You don't have to type in the SS Number for the person as the Rootsweb program includes it. You can also find out how to protest the increase (or anything else you don't like about what they're doing) via your elected officials at: http://lcweb.loc.gov/global/legislative/congress.html A former Missouri State Rep on another mailing list suggests the following: 1.) DO NOT send e-mail (he never answered his as a State Rep) 2.) DO call your local officals' offices. 3.) DO follow up with by snail mail until you feel that someone is listening. I find it sad yet amusing that while the governement is more than tripling the price of these copies, it has taken them this long to figure out how vast the family research community has become. Devotedly, Your Old ListMom

    1. [LEEDHAM] Happy Father's Day
    2. Good Evening Listers, >From your Old ListMom, who loves you more than a battery-operated tie, something for all you Dads. And, in case no one else tells, you HAPPY FATHER'S DAY GUYS -- WE LOVE YOU!! A father and a dad are not the same: One can be a dad and not a father, Or one can be a father and not bother To earn through love the more endearing name. Some find fatherhood a bit too tame, Leaving all the details to the mother, Or dumping the sweet burden on another Man with just a passing twinge of shame. You have been our dad so many years That you've become the landscape that is home, The mountain that we look to from afar. No matter where we go we're not alone, For you remain within to still our fears And be the word that tells us who we are. ~ Author Unknown Your Old ListMom

    1. [LEEDHAM] Message from List Administrator
    2. PLEASE READ AND KEEP! It seems that some of you have received messages from another list member with attachments infected with the "BadTrans" worm virus. The message may appear to be a "reply" from the list. A wiser fellow list administrator has given permission to reprint his advice here: Because the BadTrans worm sends its evil payloads ONLY to FROM addresses that are unread in the infected person's e-mail program. List messages include the original sender's "from" address. The worm uses the original subject, quotes a snippet of the original message, and uses different names for its attachment file. All of this adds up to looking very, very much like a message *from* the list, or at least from a trusted fellow listmember. Here's the breakdown: 1. Such messages cannot come directly from RootsWeb 2. NEVER open an attachment even from a trusted correspondent, unless it is expected, until its contents are separately confirmed 3. PLEASE, PLEASE make sure your antivirus software is not only updated (latest virus definitions), but upgraded (program has been augmented to handle new "types" of malicious code). 4. When I receive these infected messages, I will post that e-mail address to the list as a warning. The sender will be contacted by me privately to alert them of the problem, as they are usually unaware. Do NOT bombard that person with messages - you will only add to their grief and yours. When their e-mail addy has been verified as free of the "worm", I will be happy to immediately resub them to this list. Comments, questions, advice? E-mail me privately - PLEASE do NOT post to the list. Nancy Lewis Millsap List Administrator

    1. [LEEDHAM] Happy Mother's Day
    2. Dear Listers, Just in case no one tells you "Happy Mother's Day", I thought this message from Your Old ListMom and another Mother, might help: You and God... People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you; Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating others could destroy overnight; Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway. ~ Mother Teresa "To the world you might just be one person, but to one person you might just be the world." ~ (Author Unknown) Happy Mother's Day, from Your Old ListMom Nancy Lewis Millsap

    2. Good Evening Listers, >From your Old ListMom, who loves you more than my PDA, a good website: "Strictly By Name" http://www.copies1918.net/index.htm This company provides copies of original documents as well as a very nice transcription of the same for a very small copy fee. I have used this service myself and was very pleased with the results. Good Luck! Devotedly, Nancy Lewis Millsap Your Old ListMom

    1. [LEEDHAM] Message from List Administrator - Fraudulent Site
    2. Dear Listers, I received word of this site today: http://www.familydiscovery.com Evidently, this is a "pay" site and the links are to free USGENWEB sites. Much of the information input by selfless volunteers has been "grabbed" and linked to this site, requiring a fee. At no time will RootsWeb/USGENWEB ever charge for its information. Unfortunately there are many lazy, thoughtless people who aspire to make money from others efforts. Please check out any "pay" site before joining. If they don't allow a free grace period before joining - go no further. Chances are the information contained there is copyrighted - by someone else. Your Old ListMom

    2. Dear Listers, With all of the problems at RootsWeb these last few days, many of the mailing lists are experiencing troubles with messages not going through as they should. Because of this, we need to do the following: >From now until midnight 7 Mar 2001 - each of you that does receive this message, please post a reply to the mailing list. I will check-off each response and those not received will be contacted privately to try to clear up any problems. You don't have to put anything in the body of the message if you don't want to, just put "reply/response" or something of that nature in the subject. Thanks to all, Your Old ListMom

    1. [LEEDHAM] RootsWeb Planned Downtime
    2. Planned Downtime for Rootsweb: Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth. In the meantime, please take time to visit RootsWeb.com's sister sites -- Ancestry.com and FamilyHistory.com -- where you will find additional tools such as message boards, communities, and databases to help you in the search for your ancestors. Thank you for your patience. --The RootsWeb Staff

    1. New Welcome Message & Guidelines
    2. Good Morning Leedhams, This is the new "Welcome" message that will automatically be sent with each "subscribe" to this mailing list. Please read and keep this message and if you have any suggestions, comments, or ideas, or see any errors, please e-mail me at: lacywinston@earthlink.net As always, I welcome all of your thoughts. Welcome to the LEEDHAM-L mailing list!! **Please save a copy of this message for future reference** The list administrator is Nancy Lewis Millsap lacywinston@earthlink.net Please read this entire message BEFORE you post a message to LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com. You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to LEEDHAM-L as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to "digest mode" are given below. 1. Purpose. The LEEDHAM-L list is for the research, discussion, and exchange of information about LEEDHAM genealogy. 2. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command "unsubscribe" without quotes and with no additional text (if you have difficulty removing your signature lines, you can put the word "quit" on the line after "unsubscribe"). If your e-mail address goes bad or your mailbox fills up, you will be automatically un-subscribed by the mailing list software after the fourth message in a row bounces back to RootsWeb. 3. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you would not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to re-subscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com. 4. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "subscribe" to LEEDHAM-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. Second, send the command "unsubscribe" to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. 5. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 6. If you would like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. Don't send it explicitly to both mailing lists. 7. The list administrator for the LEEDHAM-L list is Nancy Lewis Millsap, lacywinston@earthlink.net. If you have problems getting un-subscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I will try to resolve the problem. 8. Even if you decide not to save this message, please try to remember that, like all the SURNAME-L lists at RootsWeb, the subscribe and unsubscribe messages go to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com, not to the LEEDHAM-L@rootsweb.com list itself. 9. The mailing list is presently installed at RootsWeb, which is the home of the RootsWeb. See http://www.rootsweb.com for information about RootsWeb. It's not necessary to pay anything to subscribe to any of its mailing lists. 10. Message format and attachments. Please submit messages only in plain text, and do not submit attachments. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Please, always use a helpful subject line like "John DOE d. 1800 in IA", rather than a generic one line "inquiry about my family line". 11. Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. Therefore, the LEEDHAM-L list will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to LEEDHAM genealogy. Do not include prices and ordering information; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an e-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case of doubt, send the message to the list administrator, lacywinston@earthlink.net, and I will review it and forward it to the list if appropriate. 12. Copyrights. Any person sending a message to the list retains the copyright to that message. By sending the message, you grant to the list administrator, and to his/her heirs and assigns forever, permission to distribute copies of the message to other list members, to store archival copies of the message, and to make the archival copies available to the Internet community at large. You also grant to other list members the right to quote your message in part or in total as a part of their replies sent back to the list. 13. Archives. At present, the archival copies are stored at Rootsweb.com and can be retrieved by anyone. To get a list of the messages that have been archived, send a message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject: archive SEARCH Subject: latest/* and nothing in the body of the message. You will get back a message that looks something like this: ARCHIVE search subject: latest/* BEGIN--------------cut here-------------- Latest/23:10:Subject: Re: John DOE query (fwd) Latest/24:12:Subject: Looking for Samuel FORWOOD Latest/25:15:Subject: inquiry END-----------------cut here--------------- If you decide you want to read the message about John DOE, the "latest/23:" part of the line identifies the file containing the message. Send another message to LEEDHAM-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject Archive SEND latest/23 and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time. 14. Do Not's. Do not send spam e-mail messages to the list. Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to the list. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files, zipped files, and any other type of attachment. Do not forward virus hoaxes or chain letters to the list. Do not use HTML or RTF (rich text format) in messages sent to the list. Do not cross-post messages to multiple mailing lists on the "To:" line or the "Cc:" line of the e-mail message. Do not send e-mail messages to the list for which the topic is inappropriate. Do not flame other members of the mailing list. Do not send messages to the list that involves the exchange of money in any form. If you feel uncertain, send a copy to the list administrator, lacywinston@earthlink.net for approval. Do not use the addresses of other list members for spam, advertising, or unsolicited messages or venues of any sort. Do not post the full names, addresses, or personal history of any living person to the list. That is the purpose of private e-mail. Do not use the list for adoption searches. There are numerous sites on the Internet specifically designed to assist others in finding this information. Do not feel uncomfortable because you are a "newbie" here. If you have questions - ask them! 15. Dos. Do respect the feelings and rights of others on this list at all times. This is your family! Do feel free to contact the list administrator, lacywinston@earthlink.net at anytime concerning problems or other issues regarding the list and your expectations or wishes for the list. Do feel comfortable here. Despite many "do nots", they are designed for your enjoyment and privacy. Do ask questions. We are here to share with one another. Do keep your sense of humor and enjoy yourself. Do remember that this is your family. Nancy Lewis Millsap List Administrator
