This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di
We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di
Hi there, Diane list admin here. Is there anyone on this list that need any help with research from anybody? There hasn't been much going on with this list for a while! Hoping to hear from you soon. Diane list admin
Hello All, I have been corresponding with a lady in England who has the early Elsham Parish registers on microfiche. She did a lookup for me on any Leedham she could find. Many of the records are unreadable. Her findings were few to say the least, but she did firm up the spelling on Elizabeth Wherry, wife of Thomas Leedham married May 23, 1757. We can now forget the possible "Uherry" spelling. The source for this is = Page 3, Number 9, 1757 of new register Marriages only. The marriage of Thomas Leedham of this parish and Elizabeth Wherry of the same parish married in this church by banns 23rd day of May 1757 by me C. Hildtgard Curate. Both signed in good handwriting. Witnesses signed too- named John Wherry and Thomas Leedham presume this might have been both bride and groom's fathers. Thomas Leedham witnessed many of the marriages in this book for several pages after this. One marriage in 1756 is witnessed by Thomas Leedham junior. Also signing witnesses was John Leedham. She suggested that they were employed perhaps as part time Church clerks. Frequently there were few people able to write available as signatures to weddings, so they witnessed lots of marriages. One other name was found with a different spelling. It may or may not have any importance. "Leadam". An Ann Leadam married a Thomas Dunn and Thomas Leedham was a witness as well as a Thomas Dunn senior. I have included this for what it is worth. Anyway, I will always try to keep you informed with anything that is turned up. Hope you are all well and heading into the new year with gusto.............. As Always, Ron Shadduck "Keeping the Search Alive"

Good Morning, I thought someone might enjoy this link to a searchable database of Civil War era military photographs from the U.S. Army Military History Institute. Dorothy, I'm with Robyn............I want you to stay with the group. I found out it is hard to understand another countries customs or traditions. Many times they just don't make sense unless you were raised with them. Take Care, Ron Shadduck
Good Morning, I am just going through hundreds of email messages [largely due to RootsWeb delay problems] so bear with me here. One message in particular caught my attention as it mentioned concern over being "unsubscribed" by popular demand due to opposing comments and opinions made to the list. Let me assure you that no one will ever be unsubscribed from this list because of their personal opinons. You not only have the freedom and right to express what you choose here, but you also have my personal invitation and encouragement. The only way anyone is ever removed from the list is by choice. Any intervention on my behalf comes about only under a few special circumstances. THINGS THAT WILL GET YOU REMOVED FROM THIS LIST: 1.] If you have trouble unsubscribing to the list in the usual manner and request my assistance. 2.] If you continually *FLAME* other list members, via the list or private email. 3.] Profanity. 4.] Threatening another personal via the list or private email. 5.] Publishing personal information about another list member. 6.] Using information found here to harass or harm another another person. 7.] Using information found here for profit. THINGS THAT WILL NOT GET YOU REMOVED FROM THIS LIST: 1.] Being a "Newbie". 2.] Making mistakes. 3.] Opposing opinions. 4.] Discussing "other" topics. 5.] Whining, griping, crying, moaning or complaining. 6.] Suggestions. 7.] Giving the List Administrator a headache. With all these things understood - SPEAK PEOPLE SPEAK! Nancy Lewis Millsap List Administrator p.s. Pig, you still got that Very Large Fly Swatter???
Am I, Dorothy Maddock, the only non American on this list? I sit at our computer listening to Beethoven's Eroica Symphony, and I wonder why on Earth the United States of America feels so insecure, when one of its greatest statesmen said," To remain silent when we should speak up, makes cowards of men." Abraham Lincoln. One member of your judicial system did speak up, and all hell has broken loose. If I am unsubscribed for my rebellion, so be it.
Dorothy, I don't know about your being the only non-American, but in my opinion it is good to hear the unbiased opinion of someone not personally involved. I would not vote to unsubscribe you for your "rebellion." -- Robyn Kaminski Dorothy Maddock wrote: > Am I, Dorothy Maddock, the only non American on this list? Dear Listers, Does anyone have Hadassah LEEDHAM, chr Aug 1740 in Whitton, Lincs, parents Thomas and Mary, among their ancestors? I am particularly interested to find the origins of Thomas Leedham. Did he come from Saxby or Barton upon Humber, Lincs? I know this is a pretty quiet list, but someone out there just might have the connection I need. Thank you in advance. Dorothy Maddock in NZ, where we have no pledge of allegiance and no CEOs like those of Enron, Worldcom and co.

Someone recently asked about the book, "Enemy Women"; a fictional novel set in the Civil War era. You may also find this site interesting: Civil War Women - Primary Sources on the Internet http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/women/cwdocs.html Nancy
Think of it this way: I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under _____, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. Now, fill in that blank with any doggone word you like - the principle is still the same - and they are what America was founded upon and what she still exists on today. If you are American you believe in America and when you see America's flag you put your hand over your heart and pledge your allegiance to America because America's flag gives you the blanket of protection that ensures your right and freedom to fill in that blank up there with any thing you like. Personally, I will fill in that blank with the word "God" because America gives me the freedom and the right to do just that. And, I take enormous offense at anyone who degredates my choice of words because it infringes on the rights and freedoms America gives me. Someone mentioned that the word "God" offends them because it is not their choice of vernacular to describe their own beliefs. How do you think those of us who DO choose to use the word "God" to describe our beliefs feel when we hear that word being spit upon so frivolously? When's the last time you heard someone take the name of your beliefs in vain; or demand that the name of your beliefs be omitted from all public speech; or insist that the name of your beliefs be stripped from your country's money. When's the last time someone decided that the word you choose to describe your beliefs is something so shameful that it shouldn't be allowed to be spoken by small children. But, just let one of us who choose the word "God" to describe our beliefs, take the name you choose to describe your beliefs and use it in a derogatory manner and guess what - you get all offended and you want America and all us Americans who use that awful word "God" to defend you and the word you choose to describe your beliefs - you say America gives you that right. You want the word you choose to describe your beliefs treated with respect and dignity - you say America gives you that right. And every time somebody disrespects or threatens the word you choose to describe your beliefs - America stands behind you and defends your right and your freedom to choose any word you want to use to describe your beliefs and to have that word treated with respect and dignity. Because that's what America stands for. Well, guess what - it's payback time. Now the word chosen by most of us to describe our beliefs is in peril because someone wants to take away our children's right and freedom to say our word in public school. To those of you who do NOT choose the word "God" to describe your beliefs - where is your help for the rest of us that have stood behind you and your word's rights and freedoms? Will you treat our word with the same dignity and respect you expect for your own word? Will you defend our word the same way you've asked us to defend yours? Or will you just continue to malign and degradate our word because America - this one nation under God - gives you the right and the freedom to do just that, too. Nancy
Hello LEEDHAM descendents, Re the above; NZ kids don't recite any such thing at any time in their school days, that I know of. And I don't think any Minister of Education would introduce such a custom. It would be regarded as against our civil liberties. But, Yes!, we can be as patriotic as any other nation on Earth when the occasion arises. Best wishes to you all. Dorothy Maddock.
I've heard many, many opinions on this subject today. Whether you are of the opinion that this discussion does or does not belong on this mailing list, bear in mind that we deal with our history here. I hope that this discussion is enlightening and that I haven't imposed my personal prejudices on anyone. But, since I posted the original message, I am going to make this personal statement on the subject: For those of you who still insist that the word "God" is synomymous with Christianity and has been interjected by the government to force a Christian majority - ENOUGH ALREADY! The word "God" in this context is symonymous with Creator - no matter what WORD you choose to use, be it Allah, Father, or The Big Chief. It establishes the premise that this nation was founded upon the belief of the majority, [in this context synonymous with "We the people...."], in a Creator. The person who started this issue in the Ninth Judicial Distrist of the State of California is an atheist, who believes in NOTHING. Ergo, the public recitation of a belief in SOMETHING offends him. To further his cause, the word "God", in this context, is made synonymous with kicking boy. Finally, to those of you who REALLY do think that it's unconstitutional and unnecessary to teach small school children to believe that there is a Creator, whose name, [whatever you choose to call it] is synonymous with light in the darkest hour; courage in the face of fear; benevolence in the depths of sorrow; protection in shadow of evil. And, whose name is synomymous with unconditional, immeasurable and neverending love, courage, strength, and hope - then why don't you put YOUR children in a private school. Because in America, most children go to public school and in America we teach our children to be proud of their beliefs, and in America the word "God" is synonymous with our beliefs. Nancy
For those who missed it, here is the Merriam - Webster definition of the WORD God. For the purposes of this discussion, I think we're confusing God with Christianity. Christians make no copyright on God. This is Merriam - Webster's definition of GOD - Main Entry: god Pronunciation: 'gäd also 'god Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old High German got god Date: before 12th century 1] capitalized : the supreme or ultimate reality: as a : the Being perfect in power, wisdom, and goodness who is worshiped as creator and ruler of the universe b] Christian Science : the incorporeal divine Principle ruling over all as eternal Spirit : infinite Mind 2] : a being or object believed to have more than natural attributes and powers and to require human worship; specifically : one controlling a particular aspect or part of reality 3 : a person or thing of supreme value 4 : a powerful ruler Nancy
