    1. Re: LEE, Edmund Jennings, US Lineage-1 thru 10 generations (1 of 4)
    2. I am responding to your query regarding Edmund Jennings Lee (1797 is Junior), William Fitzhugh Lee (1804, Fitzhugh is an old family name of the early 1700's), etc. Since I have a pretty lengthy linage that I believe is linked with reasonably certain references, I am including 12 generations. E-mail (4 of 4) has an Index and a full copy file in MS Word Rich Text Format. English Lineage Families-LEE. 7B 87B A record of "The Lee Family and its Descendants", by Rev. Walter M. Lee follows: In the Library of Congress is a card index file of about 40 books and pamphlets dealing exclusively with the history of the Lee family of America. The Lee's are of English descent, members of this family having been in the Army of Cromwell. The Lees of America are, according to authorities consulted by the writer, divided into two general families, one of which begins in Virginia, and the other in Connecticut. Members of the latter branch (Connecticut) are scattered throughout the West and Northwest. Members of the Virginia family are scattered generally throughout the South and Southwest. Richard Henry Lee, the eminent American statesman of Revolutionary times, and Henry Lee, Colonel in the Army of the Revolution, as well as General Robert E. Lee were members of the Southeast branch. In Halifax District, near the Virginia line, were Daniel, Green and John Lee. These names are common in the family under special treatment, viz., the family of John Lee, who removed from South Carolina to Georgia as a pioneer settler, located in Wilkinson Co., seven miles south of Irwinton, the county seat, on the Fairchilds plantation, and died not many years afterwards. Elizabeth, the wife of John Lee, after death of her husband, became the wife of a young man, John T. Fairchilds, who was one of the leading families of that section. Her bones lie in the Fairchilds cemetery beside those of her two husbands. This cemetery is located on what is known as the James Knight land on the road from Allentown to Irwinton, via Pleasant Plains Church. Crossing Maiden Creek going north, one find himself on the Knight-Fairchilds-John Lee plantation and the cemetery is located just off the road to the right, after crossing the creek, about 7 miles from Irwintown. Richard Lee, of Virginia is the beginning of the Lee family in America. Genealogists so far have been unable to determine who his father was, but it is generally supposed that he was from the Irish Thomas Lee family, who went from England to Ireland in the latter part of the sixteenth century. It is known, however, from his coat of arms that he was from the "Conton" branch of the family. Col. Richard Lee married Ann Hancock and to them were born eight children, namely: Richard (born 1647 and died 1714), from whom is directly descended General Robert E. Lee; John; Francis; William; Elizabeth; Charles; and Hancock (born 1653). 88A pg. 49 "Richard Lee; of a good family in Shropshire (and whose Picture I am told is now in Cotton, near Bridgenorth, the seat of Launcelot Lee, Esqr.), some time in the Reign of Charles the first, went to the Colony of Virginia, as Secretary, and one of the King's Privy Council. . . He was a man of good Statue, comely visage, an enterprising genius, a sound head, vigorous spirit and generous nature. When he got to Virginia, which was at that time not much cultivated, he was so pleased with the Country that he made large settlements there with his servants he had carried over; after some years, he returned to England, and gave away all the lands he had taken up, and settled at his own expense, to those servants he had fixed on them; some of whose descendents are now possessed of very considerable Estates in that Colony. After some Time in England, he returned again to Virginia, with a fresh band of Adventurers, all of whom he settled there". These are the few lines, written by William Lee in 1771, give the earliest information (now to be found) of Richard Lee, the progenitor of the Lee family whose history this volume records. From this statement, it is learned that Richard Lee was descended from the Coton branch of the Lees of Shrooshire. Somewhere about 1710-11 he had gone over to London and settled there as a Virginia merchant in partnership with his maternal uncle, Thomas Corbin. Very little information can be found concerning him. By the kindness of William Blackston Lee, Esq., the few items were copied from the London records: 1719 ............ 1724. On the 16th of November 1724, there was issued a commission to John Crabb, creditor of the late Richard Lee, late of the parish of St. Olave, Hart Street, London, but who died in the parish of St. Anne Westminister in Co.: Midd. He was living as late as 1749, for his nephew mentioned him, at tha date, as being "now in possession" of his estate, Paradise. He left no male heirs, for his brother, Philip Lee, of Maryland, willed the reversion to Francis' estate to his own sons, thus: To "sons, Thomas and Richard and their heirs forever, to be equally divided between them, that tract of land in Gloucester county, Paradise; the reversion left me with my deceased father, Col. Richard Lee, of Virginia." One of his sons, Thomas (in his will, dated in August, 1749) bequeathed his "moiety of a tract of land lying in Virginia, called Paradise, now in possession of Francis Lee, left me by my honored father, Philip Lee, Esquire, to my son Thomas Sim Lee, and my daughter Sarah Brook Lee."Probably Francis never married; at any rate he had no male heirs as late as 1749, or the reversion to his estate could not have been devised.
