    1. Lee's of Virginia to KY to MO

    3. Marsha, John and all: Here again, my LEE's have traveled along from VA to KY to MO and then WILLIAM G. LEE finally on to TX. My great grandmother, PHEBE ANN LEE, b. Feb. 11, 1851 in HUNT CO., TX to WILLIAM G. LEE, b. Sep. 11, 1805 KY, said her father was a cousin to Gen. Robert E. Lee. Here is a short recap of what I know as fact through Bible records, census, deeds & a will. Maybe this intersects with some of the research of one or more of you. I hope to hear back from some of you. Thanks for checking the following and Happy Thanksgiving to you all, Lynda Wyatt Green LEE DESCENDANCY & NOTES: 1.. ABEL LEE, b. Oct. 8, 1783 VA (or might have been NC since the lines changed in the early days), d. Dec 25, 1859. He married PHEBE (Unknown), b. Jan. 27, 1788, d. Nov. 21, 1846. My Bible says PHEBE LEE but I don't know if this was her maiden name or her married name. He possibly could have married again in MO between Phebe's death in 1846 and his in 1859. 2. WILLIAM G. LEE, b. Sept. 11, 1805 KY, d. Jan 14, 1873 Hunt Co., TX, married MELISSA SHELLEY, on Jan. 21, 1836 probably in Carroll Co., AR. She was b. Mar. 26, 1818 AR, d. Aug. 9, 1846 in Hunt Co. TX according to part of estate settlement. They had the following children: ABEL G. LEE, b. Feb 6, 1837 AR (probably Carroll Co.), d. Feb 19, 1899, married Feb 22, 1869 Hunt co., TX to MRS. MARTHA E. (THOMPSON) GIBSON, b. Apr. 2, 1845 IL, d. May 12, 1890 Wise Co., TX. She had a son from previous marriage named WILLIAM MARTIN GIBSON (GIPSON) b. abt. 1866 TX. JOHN WILLIAM LEE, b. Apr 22, 1839 Barry Co., MO, d. Jul 20, 1887 Wise Co., TX, marr. Mar 28, 1867 in Hunt Co., TX to NANCY JANE HAMRICK, b. Jun 4, 1848 Polk Co., AR, d. Sept 7, 1932 in Montague Co., TX. ROBERT W. LEE, b. Jan 4, 1841, d. Jan. 12, 1841. WILLIAM C. LEE, b. Dec. 10, 1841, Linn Co., MO, d. Sep. 7, 1914 Lone Wolf, Kiowa Co., OK, marr. Sept 19, 1867, Hunt Co., TX to SARAH GREENWOOD, b. May 14, 1847 IL, d. Mar. 8, 1928 Lone Wolf, Kiowa Co., OK. SECOND-WILLIAM G. LEE, m. Jul 15, 1847 Hopkins Co., TX to MRS. MARY A. ROBERTS, b. Jan 13, 1818 AR, d. Jul 1, 1872 Hunt Co., TX. They had the following children: ROBERT H. LEE, June 10, 1848 PHEBE ANN LEE, b. Feb 11, 1851 Hunt Co., TX, d. Jun 24, 1925 Harper, Gillespie Co., TX, marr. Nov. 4, 1866 Hunt Co., TX to DANIEL WEBSTER SAGESER, b. Feb 13, 1846 MO, d. Oct 11, 1931, Harper, Gillespie Co., TX. MELISSA LEE, b. Apr 15, 1853 Hunt Co., TX, d. Bet. 1877-1880 Hunt Co., TX, marr. Dec 31, 1868 Hunt co., TX to JOHN WALLACE b. bet. 1848-1850 AR. THOMAS H. LEE, b. Nov. 22, 1855 TX NANCY LEE, b. Oct. 25, 1857 Hunt Co., TX, d. Feb 14, 1932 Fannin Co., TX, marr. THOMAS J. GREENWOOD, b. Feb 7, 1853 IL, d. Dec 27, 1910 Fannin Co., TX. JAMES HENRY LEE, b. Jul 29, 1860 Hunt Co., TX, d. Dec. 24, 1927 Amorita, OK, m. SARAH LUCY WILSON. PROOF SOURCES: 2 Bibles, tax records, land records, marriage licenses, tombstones, William G. Lee estate settlement, CSA & Union Military Service records, Union Civil War Pension Records & U.S. Census. NOTES: I first find "an" ABEL LEE on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #2587 including a sworn statement indicating he was on the property by 1833. These witness statements were signed by GEORGE M. GIBSON & DANL LEE. Barry Co. was formed in 1835 so it would have actually still been Greene Co. at Abel's time of arrival. The certificate wasn't officially finished and posted until Aug. 6, 1839, & was designated BARRY CO. In 1834, GREENE CO., MO, ABEL & William G. were both taxed, living near one another. WILLIAM G. LEE was on the 1837 CARROLL CO., ARK. tax list and his oldest son, ABEL G. LEE, was born in ARK, Feb. 6, 1837. MELISSA SHELLEY, W.G.'s first wife, was born in AR & ABRAM & LETICIA SHELLEY are on 1835 CARROLL CO. AR Tax List. LETICIA WAGNON is in my Bible record being b. Feb. 9, 1817, which would seem to be Melissa's sister since she is only 1 year older. Next I find WILLIAM G. on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #2586 with witness sworn statements indicating he was on that land since Feb. 22, 1838. These witnesses were DANIEL G. LEE & ROBERT LEE. W.G. is not on the 1838 Carroll Co., AR tax list. His next child, JOHN W. was born Apr. 22, 1839 in Barry Co. WILLIAM G. paid $50. on a receipt dated Mar. 25, 1840, on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #5854. There is only one ABEL LEE on the 1840 BARRY CO., MO. Sugar Creek Township census and it indicates he & his wife would be in the correct age bracket. My Abel's wife, PHEBE, died Nov. 21, 1846. WILLIAM G. & Melissa's 4th child, WILLIAM C. was b. Dec. 10, 1841, LINN CO., MO., which is totally out of the area for William G. but maybe they were visiting some of old Abel or William G's ancestors there. OLD ABEL's wife, Phebe, died Nov. 21, 1846, and he would have had plenty of time to remarry before he died on Dec. 25, 1859. WILLIAM G.'s 1st wife, MELISSA (SHELLEY) d. Aug. 9, 1846, and he marries 2nd wife, MRS. MARY A. ROBERTS, in HOPKINS CO., TX, Jul. 15, 1847, and is on the 1850 HUNT CO., TX census. There are 3 ABEL LEEs in the 1850 BARRY CO., MO census, one is only 25, one with a wife named Lucy & the other named Lucinda. That seems just too coincidental. My Abel would have been 67 yrs. old on Oct. 8, 1850; the 2 Abel's listed are 63 & 68. The Rev. Abel Lee that married, Lucinda Hill, for his wife #2, seems a likely match but the age is further off than the Abel listed as 68 years old with several children still at home. I'm beginning to think these 2 ABEL's are the same person and were listed twice on the 1850 census because he still had his original home & land and possibly was listed the 2nd time with the new wife, Lucinda, and her children at their house. I would welcome the list members' thoughts on this possibility. Do any of you know what happened to Lucinda (Hill) Lee after this census or possibly where she is buried? Does anyone know where her husband, Abel Lee was buried? I'm searching for tombstone information on ABEL LEE, PHEBE LEE & MELISSA (SHELLEY) LEE and hopefully an estate settlement, guardianship papers or a will probate that will list Abel's children in order to pin down which Abel is William G. Lee's father. It would really be nice to learn what W.G.'s middle name is that started with the letter "G". This WILLIAM G. and an ABEL were side by side in the above listed land documents and would seem to be father and son. I think this information would probably be in GREEN, BARRY and/or LAWRENCE CO., MO. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Philip Adams" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 26, 2004 2:36 PM Subject: RE: [LEE] Lee's of Virginia to Kentucky > Please check the Cobb's Hal side of the family. 2. Marsha Hamilton
    3. I am afraid I am no help with your Abel Lee. I do have a Wm C. or G. Lee but he is too early to be yours born on Feb 17, 1789 son of Sgt Wm Lee of the Am Rev War, Sgt Lee's daughter was Phoebe Watkins Lee who married Fouchee Tibbs of Tibbs Bend area of Taylor Co (old Green Co., KY) where they lived all their lives. So my Lee's came from Virginia to Kentucky and stayed there although I am sure some of the others moved around and MO and TX is where many of our Kentuckians moved to if they left here. Good luck in your searches.
