Thomas Lee and Mary Bryan {The Re-Proven Family Lineage of Richard Lee and Judith Steptoe Of The Great Ditchley Lee's of Va. >> _________________ Mr. Shanks, The portion of this statement that deals with Captain Thomas LEE being proven to be of the lineage of Richard and Judith (Steptoe) LEE is an erroneous assertion in that it is NOT proven and probably is NOT true. Captain Thomas LEE of Hawkins Co., TN is reported to be born 1729 (source unknown). If so, he would be six (6) years old at time his alleged father, Richard LEE, wrote his will. Thomas is not named in that will. It is highly unlikely that a six year old boy would have rec'd his legacy or been disinherited. Thus, it is not reasonable to declare Captain Thomas LEE as part of the Ditchley lineage by way of Richard and Judith. There are unanswered questions regarding person or persons named Thomas LEE who can be identified by records. One is Thomas LEE who married Mary, daughter of Samuel GRIFFIN. In the GRIFFIN Bible he is described as Thomas LEE of Ditchley, husband of Mary GRIFFIN. She died in 1758. No further information follows this Thomas LEE and there is no other evidence which connects this Thomas LEE to a specific family of the Ditchley LEEs. At that time Richard and Judith (Steptoe) LEE were the proprietors of Ditchley Hall which allows an assertion to be made that this Thomas was a son, but we go back to the will and the lack of a Thomas name. Extensive research has not provided a son named Thomas, only Kendall. All the other six children were girls. As for Captain Thomas LEE, his pedigree is not established. He is known as a Johnston Co., NC Revolutionary War hero who was given a grant in Greene Co., NC (later Hawkins Co., TN). He died in Hawkins Co., TN in 1816. At the time of his death he was married to Mary RAINS, widow. He remains a mystery to be solved. If you have evidence to resolve this issue, it needs to be presented for evaluation. If you do not, the statement made by you (above) has to be challenged. Best regards, Hugh
Do you know the names of the girls.
